Pearls from Puraan-1

Body is different from "I". All Karm are because of this body, if this body is not there, there is no Karm; or vice versa if we do not do any Karm, we do not take this body. Besides, all sorrows and pleasures are subject to this body only, so if you want to escape from these sorrows and pleasures, do not take this body. Then the best thing not to take this body is not to do any Karm.  When there is no body, there is no Karm - when there is no Karm, there is no body - there is no body, neither there is any Karm, nor are any sorrows or pleasures.

Whichever wealth is not donated, that also goes away; whichever kingdom is not guarded well that kingdom is also lost; and whichever Gyaan is not practiced, it also doesn't stay long. Lazy people don't obtain knowledge and who are always busy in Vrat, they don't get wife. One doesn't get fame without Bhagavaan's Bhakti, one doesn't get pleasure without hard work, and one doesn't get children without wife. Unclean person doesn't earn Punya, whoever Braahman doesn't speak sweetly, he doesn't get money; who doesn't question elder people, he doesn't obtain knowledge; who doesn't start his journey, he never arrives anywhere; and who is always awake, he never fears.
[Naarad Puraan, 2/4]

Sin is like a tree. Greed is its seed, Moh is its root, lie is its trunk, and Maayaa (illusion) is the extension of its branches. Pride and wickedness are its leaves, evil mind is its flowers, A-Gyaan (ignorance) is its fruit and A-Dharm is the fruit's juice. Bad nature is the water which helps grow that tree. Who lives under the shade of this tree and eats its fruits, he always falls from his real status, that is why one should leave worry and greed. And woman, son and wealth are no reason to worry at all.
[Padm Puraan, 2/2]

Vidyaa, Karm, age, relations and family - these five are the causes of respect, Vidyaa being the highest and then comes Karm etc.
[Padm Puraan, 2/4]

As without good conduct a man; without Gyaan a Sanyaasee; and without secret consultation a kingdom doesn't look good, in the same way in spite of having everything, a woman does not look good without husband.
[Padm Puraan, 2/7]

Who goes out leaving his Pativrataa wife alone, his all Dharm goes waste. Whoever has a Satee wife, Pitar also wish for his welfare and happiness. Punyavaan wife is helpful in observing all kinds of Dharm. There is no other Dharm than Grihasth Aashram. There is no Teerth like Pativrataa wife, there is no other comfort like wife, and there is no other means to earn Punya like wife. You have done Shraadh etc without your wife, that is why your Pitar are tied.
[Padm Puraan, 2/9]

There are 10 ways to earn Dharm - (1) Ahinsaa (non-violence), (2) Kshamaa (forgiveness), (3) Satya (Truth), (4) Lajjaa (feeling shame on doing wrong things), (5) Shraddhaa (devotion), (6) Indriya Nigrah (control on senses), (7) Daan (donation), (8) Yagya, (9) Dhyaan (meditation) and (10) Gyaan (knowledge).

Who gives food, he is called life-giver, and who gives life, he is all in all, therefore by donating Ann (food) one gets the fruit of all kinds of Daan. One can earn Punya only after eating food, so half of the Punya goes to who donates food, and the other half Punya goes to who does Punya. Body is the highest means to attain Dharm, Arth, Kaam and Moksh; and food nourishes the body, therefore there is no greater Daan than donating food. Food, water, horse, cow, clothes, bed, thread and Aasan - donating these eight things are good for Pret Lok. By donating these things one goes to Yam Lok comfortably. Daan is good to be comfortable.
[Padm Puraan, 2/12]

All movable who live on Prithvi or in Swarg, are affected by Kaal. Whoever is adversely affected by Kaal - Mantra, Tap, Daan, friends, nothing can save him. Marriage, birth and death - these three are governed by Kaal only. They happen in whichever way they have to happen. Nobody can interfere them. Disturbances, hitting, snake, and diseases are governed by Karm. Age, Karm, wealth, education and death - these five are written while Jeev is in the womb. One gets species by one's Karm only. Whoever does whatever Karm, he has to suffer or enjoy according to that. Thus he enjoys or suffers according to the Karm he has done in the past.

Past Karm sleeps when its doer sleeps and stands when its doer stands. It means that his Karm is continuously with the doer like his shadow. As sunshine and shade are together, in the same way Karm and its doer are also together. Whatever is to be saved from weapon, fire, poison, that is also saved by Bhagavaan only; and whichever is really unprotected, only Bhagavaan protects it. Whatever is destroyed by Bhagavaan, it is not seen protected by anybody. Surely this is the result of my some past Karm. Bhagavaan has come in the form of this woman. Because of the actors who came to play that drama in my house, old age entered in my body. This is result of my own Karm." Thinking thus Yayaati got very sad.
[Padm Puraan, 2/13]

Vishnu said - "Guru Teerth is very holy. Guru is the means of knowing about worldly behavior and Vigyaan and attaining Moksh. Sun gives light in daytime, Moon gives light in nighttime, lamp gives light only in the house, but Guru always gives light in his disciple's heart. He destroys the darkness of his disciple's ignorance. One should always serve his Guru with mind, speech and action.
[Padm Puraan, 2/14]

"Listen about Gyaan. Gyaan has no shape, because Gyaan is the form of Paramaatmaa. He always knows everybody. Who are indulged in Maayaa, they cannot know its form. Gyaan arises by thinking about Bhagavaan. It has no comparison with anything. It cannot be seen in any kind of light (of Sun or Moon etc). Gyaan has no hands or feet, still it can move anywhere, can do anything. It is spread in all the Tri-Lok - Swarg, Prithvi and Paataal. Whose mind is not pure, they do not know it. Gyaan always destroys all kinds of ill-wills residing with its logic. That is why one should always try to detach oneself from all kinds of subjects of all Indriyaan. This produces Gyaan. Gyaan calms the mind, treats friend and enemy alike, wins your Indriyaan, teaches you to live in a lonely place. When you reach in this stage, you will be able to know everything happening in Tri-Lok. There is no doubt about it."
[Padm Puraan, 2/15]

In Sat Yug, all Teerth; in Tretaa Yug, Pushkar Teerth; in Dwaapar Yug, Kurukshetra; and in Kali Yug, Gangaa River is regarded as the most sacred place. One should do Tapasyaa in Pushkar, donate in Mahaalaya, and keep fast on Bhrigu Tung. But Gangaa's name destroys all sins, its Darshan does good, and if its water is drank or if taken bath in it, it uplifts one's seven generations. Brahmaa Jee says - "There is no Teerth like Gangaa, no Devtaa greater than Vishnu and nothing more respectable than Braahman.
[Padm Puraan, 3/3]

All Varn's people's Guru are Braahman, Braahman's Guru is Agni; a woman has only one Guru, that is her husband and a guest is the Guru of all. Vidyaa, Karm, age, relations and family - these five are the causes of respect, Vidyaa being the highest and then comes Karm etc. Among Brahhman etc Varn, whoever has more qualities among these five, he is more respectable. A Shoodra who has reached tenth stage ( is older than 90 years), is also respectable. One should give way to a Braahman, a woman, a king, a blind, an old man, who is carrying a load, a sick man, and a weak man.
[Padm Puraan, 3/4]

Guru's son, servant, who gives knowledge, a religious man, a holy man, a powerful man, who gives food, who gives water, a saint, and one's own disciple - these ten types of people are worthy to teach. Who is faithful, who has no enmity, who is brilliant, whom has appoint you as a Guru, who is reliable and dear - these six types of people are worthy to make them methodically study.
[Padm Puraan, 3/4]

One should not develop quarrel with others without any reason; keep away from arguments; never tell about a cow grazing in other's farm; never say harsh words to anyone; never live with a person who tells one's matters to others; never attract anybody's attention to rainbow, aura around the Sun, fire appeared from arrow, the Moon and gold; never oppose many people; and whatever behavior is not good for oneself, never behave in that way with others. Never create obstacle in any work related to Devtaa and Braahman; never boast oneself; and never say bad words for others......  As a person should not argue with bad people, he should not argue with learned people also. Never mention sinners' sins to others. Who are blamed falsely, when they weep and tears fall from their eyes; those tears can bring many kinds of calamities to those people who have blamed them. Many kinds of grave sins can be rectified but not the "blaming others falsely".......  Never jump over anything, or put his foot on anything; never be angry with anyone; never spare a son or disciple to get educated; and never insult dignified people. Never dig earth with one's nails; never make a cow sit forcefully; never leave a person alone who has been with you for some time while looking for a place to stay or taking food; never go over the fire; never play with snakes and weapons; never travel with people who have no etiquettes;
[Padm Puraan, 3/4]

All the four Varn can worship Shaalgraam Jee but a woman, whether widow or Suhaagin; should never even touch the Shaalgraam stone. This destroys her Punya and makes her fall in Narak.
[Padm Puraan, 4/4]

Raam sent this message to Seetaa through Lakshman when He sent him to bring Her back from Vaalmeeki's Aashram - "Seetey, People call me Eeshwar of Eeshwar, but I say whatever is happening in this world, is only because of Praarabdh (destiny). Who is Eeshwar of Eeshwar, He is also the victim of that Praarabdh. In breaking my bow, in turning mind of Kaikeyee, in the death of my father, in my going to forest, in your kidnapping by Raavan, etc etc all are caused by Destiny. Destiny is cut only by suffering or enjoying it.
[Padm Puraan, 4/14]

Yam Raaj said - "Who don't worship Vishnu; who think that Brahmaa, Vishnu and Mahesh are different; who test the Braahman who has come to his house with the desire of food, who are not kind to fool, Vaishnav, orphan, sick, and old; and who first take up a discipline then drop it because of not controlling his Indriya, they all fall into Narak.
[Padm Puraan, 4/21]

Gold is the first child of Agni Dev; Prithvi has appeared from the part of Vishnu; and cows are the daughters of Soorya Dev; that is why whoever donates gold, land and cow, he enjoys the eternal fruits of their donation. Who takes away Braahman's wealth, land or anything, he destroys his everything.
[Padm Puraan, 5/2]

People get whatever in Sat Yug by meditation, in Tretaa Yug by Ygya, in Dwapar Yug by worship; they get in Kali Yug only by Keertan of Keshav. There are 10 Avataar on this Prithvi - (1) Matsya, (2) Koorm, (3) Varaah, (4) Nrasinh, (5) Vaaman, (6) Parashuraam, (7) Shree Raam, (8) Krishn, (9) Buddh, and (10) Kalki. By pronouncing their names even greast sinners become cleansed."
[Padm Puraan, 5/9]

Satyabhaamaa asked Krishn - "Whatever Punya is done by others, it can be got when that person has given it; but whatever Punya has not been given, how can it be taken from other person?" Krishn said - "In Sat Yug, Tretaa Yug and Dwaapar Yug, country, village and family are also the partners of sins and Punya done by an individual; but in Kali Yug, only the doer has to enjoy and suffer for his Punya and sins.

--One can get 1/4th part of other's sin and Punya by teaching others, by doing Yagya for others, eating food with them sitting in the same line.
--By touching, by talking, by praying others, one gets 1/10th part of their sins and Punya.
--By seeing, by hearing name and by thinking about others, one can get 1/100th part of other's sins and Punya.
--While by telling bad things about others, one gets his all sins and gives his all Punya to him.
--When many people are eating in one line, and somebody is offering them food, and if that man skips anybody offering food, then the left out man gets the offering man's 1/6th part of his Punya.
--Who touches or talks with somebody while taking Snaan or doing Sandhyaa, he gives his Punya's 1/6th part to that person.
--Who asks money to do any Dharm Karm, his Punya's fruit goes to that person also.
--While who does any Dharm Karm stealing some money, its Punya goes to that person whose money has been stolen, not to that person who has done that Dharm Karm.
--Who advises to do Karm, who seconds the Karm, who collects all the materials for that Karm, and who physically helps in doing that Karm, also get 1/6th part of that Punya or sin.
--King from his people, husband from his wife, and father from his son get 1/6th part of their Punya and sins.
--A woman, if obeys her husband and satisfies him in all ways, then she gets 1/2 part of her husband's Punya.
--Who gives money himself, and ask other person than his servant or his son, to do the Dharm Karm, then the doer takes 1/6th part of his Dharm Karm Punya.

Thus Punya and sins of others come to oneself, even without giving or taking. There is an ancient story regarding this.
[Padm Puraan, 5/14]
