Yam Worship Naarad Jee asked - "Maheshwar, Now I wish to hear about Yam worship. What is the way so that a person does not fall from one Narak to another one. I have heard that there is Vaitaranee river in Yam Lok, and it is very terrible, how can it be crossed easily?" Mahaadev Jee said - "In earlier times, as I came out of Dwaarakaa sea after taking bath, I saw Mudgal Rishi coming. He greeted me and said to me - "Dev, I suddenly got unconscious and saw that Yam's messenger pulled me from my body. I came out in a thumb size body. They tied me and took me to Yam Raaj. Seeing me, Yam Raaj said to his messengers, "Why have you brought this Muni Mudgal, you had to bring Bheemak Kshatriya's son Mudgal who lives in Kaundinya Nagaree, because his life is all over." The messengers went there and came back saying that they did not see any man whose life span has been over. Yam Raaj said - "Who have done Vaitaranee named Dwaadashee Vrat, they are hidden from you people. Who have died in Ujjain, Prayaag or on the banks of Yamunaa; and who have donated sesame seed, elephant, gold, and cow etc, they also cannot be seen by you." The messengers asked - "Lord, How is that Vrat? Who have kept fast on Krishn Ekaadashee, how can they be free from sins?" Yam Raaj said - "Whatever Dwaadashee fall in Maargsheersh etc months, one should always keep fast on those Dwaadashee till the years ends (Agahan, Paush, Maagh and Phaalgun). One should take up he vow on the day of the fast to do this Vrat, and worship Govind asking for His forgiveness for mistakes. Take bath, worship Vishnu, establish a Kalash, put five leaves on it, five gems in it, put on flower garland, and fill it with water. Keep a copper pot on the Kalash, and establish an idol of Shreedhar. Smear the floor with clay, draw good design with soaked rice ground with water. Draw the figure of Dharm Raaj with hands and feet etc body parts. Establish copper Vaitaranee River and worship it. Then worship Yam Raaj and pray for subside all pains; then worship Vaitaranee idol, then do Pranaam to cow." Shiv Jee said - After describing Vaitaranee Vrat Rishi Mudgal went away. In whichever house is Gopee Chandan, that house is Swarg. By smearing it on one's body all diseases are cured." Shravan Dwaadashee Mahaadev Jee further said - "Now I tell you the characteristics of Vaishnav. Who worship Vishnu, they are Vaishnav. Who have forgiveness, kindness, Tapasyaa, A-Hinsaa and Truth like qualities, they are Vaishnav. Who have the knowledge of Dharm and A-Dharm, are busy in reading Ved and Shaastra, they are Vaishnav. Who always donate fruits, leaves, Ann and clothes to Vaishnav they are blessed. Who feeds only one Vaishnav Braahman, consider him feeding thousands of Braahman." Naarad Jee said - "Please tell me one Dwaadashee Vrat for those who cannot keep fast on all days." Mahaadev Jee said - "The best Dwaadashee is Bhaadrapad Shukla Dwaadashee with Shravan Nakshatra. It gives all kinds of fruits and Punya. Whichever Dwaadashee is on Wednesday with Shravan Nakshatra, its importance is very high. Everything done on that day is eternal. Because of this Nakshatra, it is called Shravan Dwaadashee. On this day, one should establish a pot filled with water, put a pot on it and establish the idol of Janaardan. Keep Naivedya cooked in Ghee in front of Him. Thus worship Govind, donate new pitchers full of water according to one's capacity and keep wake in the night. Next morning worship again Govind and donate Ann to Braahman. There is one story in this regard, there is a Maru (Maarvaad) named country west to Daasherak country. Its soil is sandy and there are many terrible big snakes. Its trees have very little leaves, so they are not very shady type, still many living beings live there. One Vaishya was wandering around there separating from his companions. He was very hungry and thirsty. At the same time he saw some Pret who were also hungry and thirsty. One of them was riding over the other. Seeing a human being, that Pret got down from the back of other Pret and asked the Vaishya - "How did you come in this terrible forest?" The Vaishya said - "I am separated from my companions by my previous Karm. I am very hungry and thirsty." The Pret gave him good food that satisfied the Vaishya. Then many Pret came there. That chief Pret gave them their share of food - yogurt, rice and water. After they had taken food, all food disappeared. Vaishya got very surprised to see this, he said to that chief Pret - "I am seeing this surprise in this forest. Where did you get this good food and water? And you satisfied many people with only a very little food. How do you live in this terrible forest?" Pret said - "I spent my previous life in trading only. I never gave even alms in greed of money. But there was good Braahman with me. Once in Bhaadrapad month, when there was a Yaog (combination) of Dwaadashee and Shravan Nakshatra, he took me to Taaptee's banks where she met Chandrabhaagaa River - Chandrabhaagaa is the daughter of Chandramaa, and Taaptee is the daughter of Soorya. I took bath in their cool and warm water. Then I satisfied many people and donated water filled pot to Braahman. I donated yogurt and rice and water filled pots to other Braahman also. Besides I donated umbrella, shoes, clothes and idol of Hari also in front of Shankar Jee. After some time I died and because of being atheist, I became Pret. Since I donated food and water on Shravan Dwaadashee, I get them daily at mid-day time. All others have stolen Braahman's money that is why they have become Pret, among them some had enmity with their masters. Here they have become my friends. Whatever is given on that day becomes eternal, I satisfy them with the same food and water. Today I have satisfied an Atithi, so I will be free from this Yoni, but these poor Pret will be suffering without me. You write down their names and Gotra. You will get a treasure on Himaalaya, so please perform their Shraaddh from that money in Gayaa." Mahaadev Jee said - "Then he went to Himaalaya, brought the treasure, took its 1/6th part and performed their Shraaddh in Gayaa. The day he performed Shraaddh of whichever Pret, he came in his dreams and told him that he had been free from his Pret Yoni. Next time when Bhaadrapad Shukla Dwaadashee fell with Shravan Nakshatra he also fasted and donated many gifts to Braahman; and this continued each year. When he died he went to Vaikunth Lok. So Naarad Jee, you also do this Vrat." Vishnu Sahastra Naam Stotra Rishi said - "Soot Jee, We heard Mahaadev Naarad Jee dialog, now tell us how Naarad Jee heard about the names of Hari from Brahmaa Jee?" Soot Jee said - "Once Naarad Jee went to Brahmaa Jee and asked about the powers of Hari's name (Naam Mahimaa)." Brahmaa Jee said - "Who just pronounce Hari, they become free from this world. Now Listen to how to do Bhakti of Hari in this Kali Yug. This Hari Name is the destroyer of even those sins which have no Praayashchit. Who pronounces Hari's name all the time, his all sins are washed away. People get whatever in Sat Yug by meditation, in Tretaa Yug by Ygya, in Dwapar Yug by worship; they get in Kali Yug only by Keertan of Keshav. There are 10 Avataar on this Prithvi - (1) Matsya, (2) Koorm, (3) Varaah, (4) Nrasinh, (5) Vaaman, (6) Parashuraam, (7) Shree Raam, (8) Krishn, (9) Buddh, and (10) Kalki. By pronouncing their names even greatest sinners become cleansed." Soot Jee said - "At this Naarad Jee said - "Father, Then what is the need to go to Teerth, one can attain Mukti even by singing His name? Tell me His names." Brahmaa Jee said - "Son, Vishnu is the Sanaatan Paramaatmaa. Because of killing Kaitabh named Daitya, He is called "Kaitabhaari"; since He is omnipresent, He is called Vishnu; since He sustains everybody, He is called Dhaataa. Naarad, I don't know His name and Gotra (family name); I tell only Ved, I am not the knower of Paramaatmaa; therefore you go to the place where Vishwanaath, Lord of Kailaash, lives. He knows everything, he will tell you everything." So Naarad Jee went to Mahaadev. He had five faces, 10 arms, three eyes on each face. He asked Naarad Jee as what brought him there. Naarad Jee said - "Prabhu, Once I went to my father. There I heard the importance and power of Vishnu's names. Then I asked him about Vishnu's names, he told me that he could not tell me that, only Rudra could tell that. That is why I have come to you. In this Kali Yug people will be living only for a short time, they will be indulged in A-Dharm, they will not do Sandhyaa, Vrat etc, so please tell me about His names so that they can do good to those people." Shankar Jee said - "Naarad, After hearing His names, nobody gets bad Gati." Then he discoursed on Vishnu's names which he did to Paarvatee Jee before. Then after some time by chance Naarad Jee came to Naimish Aranya Teerth on Prithvi. Rishi welcomed him and asked - "We are blessed today. Please tell us how our sins can be destroyed without Daan, Tapasyaa, Teerth, Yagya, Yog, Shaastra reading etc." Naarad Jee said - "Once Paarvatee asked Shiv Jee - "Prabhu, Who do you meditate upon? Which Mantra do you Jap? Tell me this." Mahaadev Jee said - "Devee, In Sat Yug, people used to mediate upon Vishnu and His names. Who do not attain Him even by all kinds of Dharm Karm, they can attain Him only by pronouncing His names. Now I tell you His 1,000 principal names which give Mukti. ( Here is give Vishnu Sahastra Naam, p 695-722) This Stotra pacifies all crimes and increases Bhakti in Hari. This is a unique ladder to go to Vishnu Lok. It gives all kinds of fruits to people. It gives son to barrens, cures diseases, increases life span. Who does reading or Jaap of its one Mantra, or one part of Mantra or even one letter, his all wishes are immediately fulfilled. You should always keep it secret. You should never tell this to who is not the devotee of Vishnu. There is no Dharm, no Mantra, no Truth, no Gati greater than Vishnu." Paarvatee Jee got very happy to hear the Stotra. She said - "It is so surprising that people are suffering in spite of this Stotra. But Hey Swaamee, If I cannot read the whole Stotra because of any reason, then tell me that one name which can do good for me." Shiv Jee said - "Devee, I do Jaap only of "Raam" Naam. It is equal to 1,000 names. It can be pronounced by any Varn. This Stotra is the giver of Moksh. One should not do hurry in doing its reading. Who read this at the time of sunrise, their might, life span and wealth are always on increase. Who read this on the way, they do not suffer the travel related sufferings."
