Bhairav

Another name of Shiv. Brother of Vetaal. Bhairav is a terrific manifestation of Shiv whose Vaahan is a fierce dog. There are some others also, such as Kaal Bhairav, Nakuleshwar Bhairav. Batuk Bhairav is called Siddhi Da or conferring facility or success.

Mahaanirvaan Tantra (p 85) gives eight Bhairav names thus -
(1) Asitaang (of the black body),
(2) Chand (the Fierce One),
(3) Kapaalee (the Wearer of Skulls),
(4) Krodhonmatt (the Angry One),
(5) Bheeshan (the Terrific One),
(6) Unmatt (the Mad One),
(7) Ruru, and
(8) Sanhaaree (the Destroyer)

These Bhairav appear to be Bhairav of the Devee worship at the eight of the Shakti Peeth, though the titles of the Devee, as given in Kalki Puraan, do not match with those of 8 Peeth Naayikaa (see No 4 under Naayikaa). Thus Asitaang is worshipped with Kaalee, not with Mangala at the Peeth Kaal-Maadhav, where it is said that one-half of Satee's buttock fell.

Ruru, according to Kalki Puraan, is the name of the Bhairav of the Devee worshipped as Dev-Garbh at Kaanchee, where it is said her skeleton fell.
