(1) Manifestation of Bhagavaan's form. (4) Ash or Bhasm or Bhabhoot - This Bhasm represents symbolically that in this world of Maayaa nothing remains finally except the ash. Ash cannot be burnt and only be turned into anything else. Vibhooti is made powerful by reciting Mantra and also by offering to the Lord. Saint Thirugnanasambandar, who got the Gyaan Milk from the Goddess Paarvatee herself, and is regarded as the reincarnation of Lord Kaartikeya (Murugan) cured the incurable stomach pain of the Pandya King using the Vibhooti and reciting self composed 10 couplets starting with "Mantram Aavathu Neeru..." which means "Vibhooti is the Mantra...", praising the Supreme Nature of Vibhooti and the King was cured. Even today many add power to the Vibhooti and give it as a medicine to apply on body parts and also to drink water in which a little of Vibuthi is added. Vibhooti, the sacred ash, is nothing but ash made out of pure cow dung on Shiv Raatri day. Vibhooti is of two types - Mahaa Bhasm and Swalp Bhasm. Again Mahaa Bhasm is of 3 types (Sautram, Smartam and Laukikam). Sautra and Smart Bhasm are permitted to Braahman only. These need some Mantras while wearing, but Laukik Bhasm can be worn by all people. The cow dung Bhasm is called Aagneya Bhasm. Pandit and Vidwaan (learned people) normally wear Yagya Bhasm. All the people are restricted to chant Shiv Panchaaksharee without Bhasm. Bhasm can be worn on forehead, chest, Naabhi (navel) and on two shoulders. These are minimum places 5 places. We can apply it in 16, 8, 36 places also. Jaabaal Upanishad describes Bhasm in detail. Sai Baabaa's Vibhooti which comes out from his picture, is also famous.
