Raahu

Raahu was born to Sinhikaa and Viprachitthi. Rahu’s mother Sinhikaa (also known as Sinhitaa) was the daughter of Hiranyakashyap. There are several brothers to Raahu - Shalya, Nabh, Vaataapi, Ilval Namuchi etc. It is also believed that Raahu is the eldest of his 100 brothers. He also has a sister by name Maahishmatee.

Bhaagavat makes a mention of Raahu in the cosmic sea churning. As the demons and the gods went on churning the milky ocean with Meru Parvat as the churning rod, several interesting things surfaced and the ambrosia (Amrit) is one among them. Lord Vishnu, disguised himself as Mohinee, a celestial dancer and took upon himself the task of distributing the Amrit. In this process, He elbowed the demons and went on offering the Amrit to gods and angels. Seeing this, Raahu impersonated as one of the gods and sits in the row of the gods to partake Amrit. Noticing this Soorya and Chandra alerted Mohinee. Mohinee loses no time in beheading him but by then Raahu had swallowed Amrit so he could not be killed. Henceforth the neckline became Raahu and the lower part of his body is referred to as Ketu. Since then Raahu is said to have cursed against Soorya and Chandra, and gobbles them up in the wake of an eclipse.

Astrologically : Born into Paithenasa Gotra, Raahu is fierdish in nature. He was born in the year Paarthiv (Raakshas –in some other books) in Bhaadrapad Maas, Krishn Paksha on the 14th day of the waving Moon on a Sunday. Vishaakhaa is his birth star. Raahu Dashaa lasts for 18 years. He has no aura of his own as he is considered a "Chhaayaa Graha" (shadow planet). At the intersecting points of lunar and solar circumferences, there are two dots. The northern dot is called Raahu or the "Dragon's Head" and the southern dot is referred to as "Dragon’s Tail". Raahu, like other planets does not preside over particular zodiac sign. Vrishabh Raashi is his best place whereas Vrishchik Raashi is his worst. For Ketu, it is vice versa. According to Paraashar Sanhitaa, Kanyaa Raashi is his nature place. In the Nav Graha worship they are worshipped as two Graha (planets).
