Naarad Jee Looks for a Devotee of Naaraayan (2)
Once Naarad Jee asked Shree
Hari that why does He not meet the people on Earth. Shree Hari
replied that He is always eager to meet His true devotees but people
themselves actually do not want to meet Him. Naarad Jee could not believe
this. Then Shree Hari asked him to bring any person who really wanted to
meet Him from the Earth. Naarad Jee agreed to this.
Naarad Jee started roaming on
Earth and finally decided to ask a farmer to come with him and meet Shree Hari
in Vaikunth Lok. Naarad Jee came to that farmer and told him that he could
take him to meet Shree Hari. The farmer agreed but said to Naarad Jee that he
would like to meet Shree Hari after his children are grown-up. Naarad Jee said
"OK" and again reached the same farmer after his children were grown-up
and asked him to meet Shree Hari as his children were grown-up now.
The farmer said to him that "Yes,
I certainly still like to meet Him but let my children get married." So
Naarad Jee again waited for a few years and when his children got married he
visited him again and asked him to meet the God. The farmer was still engrossed
in Maayaa of this material world. He said - "I would certainly like to meet
the God once he becomes grandfather."
So Naarad Jee waited for a few
years more, and when that farmer had a few grandchildren, he went to him again
and asked him to meet the God. The farmer this time said that he would have
loved to see God but let his grandchildren get married then only he would go.
So Naarad Jee waited for some more years and when one day Naarad Je went to see
him, he had already died.
After death, the farmer was born
again as a bull in the same house of which he was the owner once. His children
used him (the bull) to work hard in the fields. Naarad Jee again went to him and
asked him to come with him to meet the God. The bull replied that once his
children had earned a lot of money he will definitely meet the God.
After some years that bull also
died and got rebirth as a snake in the same house. Naarad Jee still not left
hope so he again went to him and asked him the God. The farmer, now in the form
of snake, replied that since his family has become wealthy there was a danger of
thieves and he would like to protect his family's possessions.
Now Naarad Jee could bear no more
and understood that the farmer did not want to meet God in reality and was just
making excuses each time. Naarad Jee told his family that a snake was living in
their house. On hearing this, the family searched the snake and beat him with
stick very harshly till he died. Finally the farmer took birth in a very lower
species asked Naarad Jee that now he wanted to meet Shri Hari, but Naarad Jee
replied that Shree Hari was very busy in a meeting with His true devotees in
Vaikunth Lok and had no time to meet that farmer.
Naarad Jee and Sanat Kumaar
From
Myths of Hinduism
This story is from
Chhaandogya Upanishad
Once Naarad Jee somehow suffered from delusion so he went to Paparee Muni
to remove it. The Muni welcomed him and asked him whether he was at peace.
Naarad Muni said - "Where is peace? Today I am suffering from delusion,
I am not able to get peace anywhere. Please help me, O Great Muni."
Paparee Muni thought to send him to Sanat Kumaar, so he sent him to Sanat
Kumaar. So Naarad Jee came to Sanat Kumaar, Sanat Kumaar welcomed him, offered
him a comfortable seat and asked his welfare. Naarad Jee said - "I am
not at peace today, so I have come to touch your feet." Sanat Kumaar
Jee asked - "What is the matter Naarad? Why don't you have peace today?"
Naarad Jee said - "I don't know."
Sanat Kumaar Jee said - "Tell me what branches of knowledge you know and
what you don't know?"
Naarad Jee said - "Bhagavan, I have studied the six schools of philosophy,
the four Ved, sub-Ved, mathematics and all other sciences, but I am unable
to get the peace of Self."
Sanat Kumaar Jee said - "Naarad, All this knowledge is very high in standard.
This knowledge will only bless you. The knowledge is most absorbing and wonderful,
you deep dive into it and this will make you one with the world."
Significance of Truth
Naarad Jee asked - "Mahaaraaj, Is there anything else which is greater than
knowledge?"
Sanat Kumaar said - "Yes, There is, and that is speech. Today you should
worship speech. Speak the truth. Whatever you speak, speak the truth. If you
speak the truth your speech will be radiant and forceful. O Naarad, Shringee
Rishi spoke the truth for 84 years. Whatever he said must happen. Atri Muni
also observed truthfulness for 120 years. If he said "a bird must come
to him", it must come to him. It is a great thing. It can take you up
to God. It is an invaluable asset which can take you across this phenomenal
world. So you worship speech and speak the truth."
Mind-Higher than the Truth
Naarad Jee asked - "Mahaaraaj, Is there anything else which is higher than the
truth?"
Sanat Kumaar said - "Yes Naarad, There is still a higher thing than the speech,
that is mind. The mind is very significant. It moves faster than the air. This mind
can take you to Indra Lok within no time. Stabilize your mind, and it will take you
great heights."
[In fact a man does not see with his eyes, he sees with the mind. Eyes are only
instrumental to capture the image of the thing seen, it is only mind that analyzes that
image and tells us what we have seen. So if the mind is stable the impression or image
is good and clear, otherwise not, such a drunkard cannot see the thing clearly, because
his mind is not stable.]
Sanat Kumaar said to Naarad - "A parable comes to my mind in this regard. Once there
was a rich man. A poor man came to him to ask for some work. The rich man asked him -
"What salary will be acceptable to you?" The poor man said - "I do not want
any remuneration, but I have a principle, when I will have no work, I will kill you."
The rich man agreed after a brief thought and started giving him work one by one. The servant
was clever and he finished his work soon so the rich man was very happy with him. All this
continued for some time but later the rich man got worried as found himself unable to find
work. So he went to his Guru and told him his problem and the fear of being killed by his
servant. His Guru suggested him that he should engage him not only for his own work, but
the work for the world. The rich man got very happy and relieved hearing this and he started
using him for the welfare of the world. There was no dearth of the welfare work for his
servant."
Sanat Kumaaar continued - "O Naarad, the same condition is of the mind too. If we
keep our mind engaged in noble deeds and in the contemplations of God, we are happy.
But if we leave it free, just like that, it will take us to doom. So O Naarad, You
keep you mind steady and it will take you to God."
Buddhi-Higher than the Mind
Naarad Jee asked - "Mahaaraaj, Is there anything else which is higher than the mind?"
Sanat Kumaar Jee said - "Yes Naarad, It is the Buddhi (Intellect) which is higher than
the mind. It is gift of God. For this you pray to Goid that he should bless you with Buddhi.
Buddhi teaches to discriminate among many things or decisions. To decide what is good, what
is bad, is the function of Buddhi. It is the Buddhi which enables you to discriminate the
phenomenon world. This mind submits all the Vaasanaa (desires) to the Buddhi and the Buddhi
decides what to accept and what not to accept. Thus mind shows us all the paths, but our
Buddhi decides which path to take for our life. It is the deciding factor of our life's path
or goal. It is the guide of our life. We have three types of Buddhi - Medhaa, Ritanbharaa and
Pragyaa. Our soul merges with the God after attaining these three types of Buddhi. Now-a-days
we do not attempt to develop these three types of Buddhi.
Antahkaran (Sub-conscience)
Naarad Jee asked - "O Great Rishi, is there anything else which is higher than this Buddhi?"
Sanat Kumaar Jee said - "Yes Naarad, There is. It is the Antahkaran (sub-conscience)
which is higher than this Buddhi. You should regard it outstanding. And by doing so, your
life will also be outstanding. Merge your Buddhi with this sub-conscience."
Smriti (Memory)
Naarad Jee said - "Enough on this sub-conscience. Now tell me if there is any other
thing which is superior than this sub-conscience too?
Sanat Kumaar Jee said - "Yes Naarad, There is, and it is Smriti (memory) which
is higher than the sub-conscience. Shringee Rishi himself says - "Leave aside
other thing. You take my life for consideration. Millions of years b efore I had
learnt these Vaidik verses, but today again according to my Karm, I am able to
reproduce them before you." The impressions of several generations remain
imprinted on our sub-conscience. Smriti brings them sprouting forth."
Brahmcharya (Celibacy)
Naarad Jee again asked - "Is there anything greater than Smriti also?"
Sanat Kumaar said - "Yes Naarad, There is and that is Brahmcharya. Brahmcharya
is higher than the Smriti. This Brahmcharya brings forth radiance and splendor. It
helps to revel into Brahmaa. You should be a Brahmchaaree. If we do not follow
Brahmcharya then our life is only for name sake. O Naarad,
Gaargee (wife of Yaagyavalkya) has
spoken about it very high. She says - "Brahmchaaree is considered a great man
in the world. He is full of radiance like the Sun. He is called Mrityunjaya (winner
of Death), he is called Rudra (one who has won his enemies. Lomash Muni observed
Brahmcharya throughout his life. Agastya Muni
was able to drink the whole ocean in three sips - how? because of the Brahmcharya only.
What were those three sips? Gyaan, Karm and Upaasanaa (Knowledge, Action and Devotion)
and the ocean is this phenomenon world."
