8-Other Dharm
6-Naarad Puraan, 1-Poorv Bhaag, p 53-66

This chapter has diverse kind of information, only some of it is given here.

Praayashchit

Dharm Raaj said - "Now I tell you about Dharm described in Ved and Smriti for the four Varn. In this chapter many kinds of Praayashchit are described

No need to do any Praayashchit for these events -- If somebody gives medicine to a cow or a Braahman with all good intention, and the patient dies. If somebody dies while drinking oil or medicine, or taking medicine, or taking out an iron piece or thorn from one's body. To treat or give medicine if a calf's neck is tied, or to protect them if they are kept at home, there is no fault in that, hence no Praayashchit. When a Praayashchit is done, there is no rule to cut all hair for women (just gather their hair together and cut only two finger long hair), or to sit in Veer Aasan, or to sit in Gaushaalaa (where cows are tied). If a cow is going somewhere one should not follow her. A Braahman, a king, and a prince need not to shave their head while doing their Praayashchit but their Vrat should be doubled, so also their Dakshinaa.

A Braahman should do Ishtaa and Poort Karm. By doing Isht Karm - Yagya etc, he attains Swarg; and attains Moksh if he does Poort Karm. The Karm which are done with the desire of wealth are called Isht Karm; and building water ponds, wells, etc are called Poort Karm. Especially planting gardens, reconstructing of ponds, wells, temples are called Poort Karm.

If one Sootak (unclean period at the time of child birth) is going on, and another one starts, then there is no fault in the second one. It becomes automatically clean along with the first one. The second birth period becomes clean with the first birth period; and the second death period becomes clean with the first death period. If a woman's menses has stopped, she becomes clean only by taking bath.

As a girl takes the seventh step with her husband at the time of marriage (Sapt Padee), she loses her father's clan (Gotra) and joins her husband's clan (Gotra), therefore her Shraaddh, Tarpan etc should be done by her husband's Gotra. An unmarried girl belongs to her father's Gotra, so she is not separate from her father's Gotra in respect to Pind, Gotra and Sootak. Only after the marriage ceremony and Mantra she becomes separate from her father's family. She is married in whichever Varn, she is tied to the Sootak of that Varn only. On the 4th night from her marriage she becomes united with her husband with regard to Pind, Gotra, and Sootak.

While doing Pind Daan, husband and wife both are together, therefore all Pind Daan should read the Sankalp with both names. It means that Pind Daan should be for father and mother together, grandfather and grandmother together. Thus three Pind Daan are done for six people. All women enjoy their Shraaddh with their husband's. One should do the Shraaddh for both, father and mother. In this annual Shraaddh, Vishwedev is not worshipped. Therefore one should offer the Shraaddh food without Vishwedev and give only one Pind.

Collection of bones should be done on first, second, third or fourth day of the cremation of the dead body. Whose Vrishotsarg is performed on the 11th day he is free from Pret Lok and is honored in Swarg Lok. One should stand in the water up to navel level and imagining that my Pitar (ancestors) should come and accept this Jalaanjali, pick the water in his both hands joined together and slowly pour it into the same water. He should stand south facing and pour the water in the space (upward), because the place of Pitar is sky and the direction is south. Devtaa are said Aap (water) and Pitar's name is also Aap. Therefore who desires the good of Pitar, he should offer water in water. That water is always clean and holy which is heated by Soorya's rays in day time, is touched by stars' light and air in night, and is benefited from both at Sandhyaa time. Which is in its natural state, which is not touched by any unclean thing, that water is always clean and holy. Such water, whether it is in a pot or on Prithvi, has been considered clean and holy. One should offer Jalaanjali for Pitar and Devtaa in water, and who have died without their final rites, one should offer Jalaanjali to them on land. While doing Hom and Shraaddh, offer Pind and Aahuti with one hand; while doing Tarpan, water should be offered with both hands."

Sins and Gangaa

Dharm Raaj further said - "Now I tell you abut Narak. There are millions of types sins and million types of Narak (Hell), I cannot describe you all, but here are some of them. Who invites a Braahman saying that "I will give you money" and when he comes, he doesn't give it to him; who takes donation daily; who blames Braahman; who orders Braahman and elders - all are regarded as Braahman killers. Stealing even roots, fruits, silken cloth, gems, all metals, Ghee, honey, betel nut, water, sandalwood, camphor, abandoning Shraaddh, speaking ill about saints, food, grains, Rudraaksh etc all are regarded like stealing the gold.

Having physical relationship with daughter, sister, son's wife, low caste woman, other woman, brother's wife, friend's wife, who trusts on you - all are considered as having physical relationship with Guru's wife.

One can do Praayashchit of Braahman killing like sin but who is jealous with Braahman and quarrels with Braahman, there is no Praayashchit for him. Who break the trust, are unfaithful and have relations with Shoodra woman they cannot be uplifted. Who speak ill about Ved, Bhagavaan's Kathaa, they also cannot be uplifted any time.

But many of the sins can be destroyed by doing Praayashchit. Gangaa, Tulasee, Satsang, Hari Keertan, all destroy sins. Whichever Karm are offered to Vishnu they all become successful; others are useless. Bhakti of Vishnu destroys all kinds of sins. Bhakti is said to be of ten types - Saatwik, Raajas, and Taamas; then each of these are again subdivided into three as the Uttam (best),  Madhyam (medium) and the Adham (lowest). The tenth type of Bhakti is the highest - Paraa Bhakti.

--When one does Bhakti to destroy somebody, that is called "Adham Taamas Bhakti".
--When one worships Him with ill feelings, that is called "Madhyam Taamas Bhakti".
--When one worships Him seeing others worshipping Him, that is called "Uttam Taamas Bhakti".

--When one worships Him with desire of wealth and grains with great Shraddhaa, it is called "Adham Raajas Bhakti".
--When one worships Him with the desire of fame through out the world with great Shraddhaa, it is called "Madhyam Raajas Bhakti".
--When one worships Him with the desire of being like Him (Saaroopya) or living with Him (Saalokya), it is called "Uttam Raajas Bhakti".

--When one worships Him to destroy his sins with great Shraddhaa, it is called "Adham Saatwik Bhakti".
--When one serves Him with Shraddhaa with the feeling that "this is liked by Vishnu", it is called "Madhyam Saatwik Bhakti".
--When one serves Him like a slave thinking that "this is Shaastra's order", it is the best kind of worship and it is called "Uttam Saatwik Bhakti".

Who gets satisfied hearing even a little praise of Vishnu, his Bhakti is considered as Uttamottam (the highest of the highest and the best among the best)

These ten types of Bhakti are destroyer of the bondage of this world. Thus to win this world one should do Bhakti of Janaardan not abandoning the Karm. Who abandons his Dharm and does Bhakti only, Vishnu doesn't get happy with him. He is happy only by following Dharm. All Ved gives good conduct the first place, and good conduct come from Dharm, and the Lord of Dharm is Vishnu. That is why one should do His Bhakti not opposing his own Dharm. Whose conduct is not good, their Dharm also doesn't give them pleasure.

Now you do Bhakti of Naaraayan, you will surely get joy. Shiv is Hari, and Hari is Shiv. Who differentiates between them, he goes to hundreds of Narak. Now listen to the reason why I have come to you. Your great grandfathers were burned to ashes by Kapil Muni. Now they are living in Narak. You uplift them by bringing Gangaa River. Gangaa certainly destroys all sins. If even a hair, bone, nails, tooth, ash of the body is touched by Gangaa, she takes him to the Swarg."

After saying this Dharm Raaj got disappeared. Bhageerath handed over his kingdom to his ministers and went to forest. There he worshipped on a 16 Yojan wide peak, westward to Nar-Naaraayan's Aashram, did Tapasyaa there and brought Gangaa on earth.
