10-Dwaadashee Vrat
6-Naarad Puraan, 1-Poorv Bhaag, p 72-89

Bhavishya Puraan's Uttar Khand is completely devoted to Vrat and fasts, nothing else. This chapter is also on Vrat.

Dwaadashee Vrat

Rishi said - "Hey Soot Jee, After this what other question Naarad Jee asked from Sanak Jee?" Soot Jee said - "Naarad Jee said - "Tell me those Vrat by which Vishnu gets pleased. Who do His Vrat, worship, or meditation, He gives them Mukti, but He doesn't give His Bhakti easily. You are the Bhakt of Vishnu. Tell us the path, Nivritti or Pravritti whatever, which pleases Bhagavaan."

Sanak Jee said - "Observe a fast on 12th Shukla of Maargsheersh Maas and worship Naaraayan on that day. Worship Him in white clothes after taking bath etc with this Mantra "Keshavaaya Namastubhyam". Offer 108 Aahuti with this Mantra (given on p 73) only with sesame seed mixed with Ghee. Then wake up the whole night near Shaaligraam. In the same night bathe Shree Naaraayan with one Seer (900 grams) milk and worship Him along with Lakshmee Jee with rice, flower, Naivedya, food etc three times. Next day morning again worship Bhagavaan and offer Ghee mixed Kheer and coconut to Him, and offer Khichadee mixed with Ghee to Braahman with the following Mantra (given on p 73), and feed him. Then he should take food himself along with his brothers and friends. Who completes this Vrat like this, he gets the fruit of eight Agnishtom Yagya.

One should do this Vrat in this way throughout the year with different Mantra each month (method is given there). Who observes this Vrat even in one month or two months, he gets the fruit of this Vrat for the same month. If one has observed this Vrat for 12 months, he should do its Udyaapan in next Maargsheersh Maas. In the morning, take bath, wear white clothes, white flower garland, and white sandalwood paste. Build a square Mandap in his courtyard. Adorn it with little bells, flower garlands, flags etc. It should be covered with white cloth. Make a Sarvatobhadra Mandal in its center with several colors. Put 12 Kalash filled with water on that Mandal and cover them with one white cloth. Make a statue of Lakshmee Naaraayan of gold, or silver or copper. Who cannot make statue, he can put the money at its place. In the night, hear Puraan's stories and worship Naaraayan three times. Next day ask Braahman to offer 1,000 Aahuti of sesame seed with Vyaahriti Mantra. Worship again and hear Puraan's Kathaa. Then offer 10 Pooaa, Ghee, grains with yogurt and Kheer and Dakshinaa to each of 12 Braahman pronouncing the Mantra (given on p 77). Then feed Braahman according to one's capacity and take food himself too."

Poornimaa Vrat

Sanak Jee said - There is another Vrat which fulfills desired wishes. It destroys millions of sins. Starting with Maargsheersh Poornimaa, take bath and worship Lakshmee Naaraayan with "Aum Namo Naaraayanaaya" Mantra, and read Stotra, Puraan etc. Keep fast the whole day, offer Arghya to Chandra Dev, keep awake the whole night, next day feed a Braahman and take food himself too. After 12 months do the Paaran of this Vrat. Prepare a square Mandap and surround it by pitchers. In the center, draw Sarvatobhadra Mandal with five colors and keep a water-filled pitcher upon that Mandal. Cover the pitcher with a beautiful thin cloth and establish an idol of Lakshmee Naaraayan made of gold, or silver or copper. Bathe the idol with Panchaamrit, worship it methodically, wake up in the night, and next day after worship it again in the morning, donate it to a Braahman along with Dakshinaa. If possible, feed the Braahman too. Donate sesame seed, and do Hom with sesame seed. Who does this Lakshmee Naaraayan Vrat with this method he goes to Vaikunth Dhaam along with his children and grandchildren.

Hari-Panchak Vrat

This Vrat is done 5 days a month for 12 months - 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, Poornimaa, starting from Maargsheersh Maas. On 10th day one should take food only once and take a vow to do this Vrat. Then observe the fast for next five days. Then next day (on 1st day) take food himself and if possible feed Braahman also. In the next 11 months, from Paush to Kaartik Maas, observe fast only for 5 days, 11th to Poornimaa. Do Paaran in next Maargsheersh Maas.

Maasopavaas Vrat

This Vrat should be observed in Aashaadh, Shraavan, Bhaadrapad, or Aashwin Maas. In any of these months, one should drink Panchgavya in Shukla Paksha and sleep near Vishnu. Next day in the morning, take a vow with this Mantra (given on p 84), start fasting and live in a Vishnu temple. Bathe Vishnu with Panchaamrit, light the lamp everyday. After the month is over, feed Braahman according to one's capacity, give Dakshinaa. Thus he should do it every year for one month for 13 years. In its Paaran, one should donate a cow, feed 12 Braahman and donate clothes, ornaments and Dakshinaa. This Vrat gives Moksh. It is especially good for widows, Sanyaasee, Brahmchaaree.

Ekaadashee Vrat

Sanak Jee said - "Hey Naarad Jee, Now I will tell you about this Ekaadashee Vrat which is famous in Tri Lok. This Vrat fulfills all kinds of desires. This Vrat pleases Vishnu very much. Whoever, Braahman, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shoodra, women, does it with Bhakti, Bhagavaan fulfills his all desires. On both Ekaadashee, 11th day, one should not eat food. Who eats food on this day he is a great sinner. He goes to Narak. If anybody desires for Mukti, he should eat food only once on 10th day and 12th day. On 10th day worship Vishnu Bhagavaan and sleep near Vishnu Bhagavaan. Next morning, on 11th day, worship Vishnu Bhagavaan and offer his Vrat to Vishnu by reading this Mantra (given on p 86). Do not eat anything on that day and keep awake in night.

Next day worship Vishnu Bhagavaan. Who bathes Vishnu Bhagavaan with Panchaamrit on 11th day, and with milk on 12th day, he gets Hari's Saaroopya. After worship read this Mantra (given on p 86), feed Braahman and give Dakshinaa. Who observes this Vrat like this he goes to Vaikunth Dhaam not to come back in this world.

During this Vrat, one should not talk to Chaandaal and fallen (Patit) people. Who are atheists, enemies of Braahman, greedy for others' food, and desires for other women, the Vratee should not respect them even with speech. There is no Teerth like Gangaa, there is no Guru like mother, there is no Devtaa like Vishnu, and there is no greater Tap than fasting. There is no mother like Forgiveness, there is no wealth like fame, there is no benefit like knowledge, there is no father like Dharm, there is no friend like Vivek and there is no Vrat like Ekaadashee.

An example of Gaalav Muni and Bhadrasheel is given here in this reference. There used to live a Muni named Gaalav on the banks of Narmadaa River. He had a son named Bhadrasheel. Bhadrasheel had control on his Indriyaan and remembered his past life. He was always busy in Naaraayan's worship. He used to make statues of Vishnu and worshipped it, he told his playmates also to do the same and to observe Ekaadashee fast. So his playmates also did the same. At play time he used to do Sankalp of Ekaadashee Vrat and offered it to Vishnu.

Gaalav got very happy to see his son, so once he said to him - "The way you are living, you are too young to live like that. How your mind became like this? I am very surprised to see all this. I want to know the reason of this." Bhadrasheel said - "Father, Whatever I have experienced in my past life, because of being Jaatismar, I still remember it. In my previous life I was a Chandra Vanshee king named Dharmkeerti. I was educated by Dattaatreya. I ruled over the whole Prithvi for 9,000 years. I did many Punya Karm, but later because of bad company I abandoned Vaidic path so my people also abandoned the right path. Thus I also got one sixth of their sins.

One day I went to a forest for hunting. There I got hungry and thirsty so I came to the banks of Narmadaa River. I took bath in the river. I did not notice as where my army was gone, I was alone there hungry. At the same time some people who observed Ekaadashee Vrat gathered there. I also went, without food as I was, with them and passed the night waking up. As the waking was ended, I died there. Yam Raaj's messengers caught me and took me to Yam Raaj. Yam Raaj called Chitragupt and asked the punishment for me.

Chitragupt thought a while and spoke - "Although he has committed many sins, but who keeps fast on Ekaadashee, he becomes free from all kinds of sins. He was without food on the bank of Narmadaa River, so he has become now pure and his all sins are destroyed." Hearing this Yam Raaj started trembling. He prostrated before me, worshipped me and told his all messengers - "I tell you one thing, do not bring the people who are religious, who are busy in Vishnu's worship, observe Ekaadashee Vrat and who pronounce "Hey Naaraayan, Hey Achyut, Hey Harey, please protect me". Who pronounce the names of Naaraayan, Achyut, Janaardan, Krishn, Vishnu, Shiv, Shankar etc, do not go even near to them. They don't come under me. Who are devotee of Braahman, do Satsang regularly, entertain their guests, consider Shiv and Vishnu the same, do not bring such people to me. You may bring only those people who disrespect their parents, are jealous with others, wish bad to their well wishers, wish bad for others, greed for others money etc."

When I heard this I recollected my bad Karm and repented for them. By repenting and hearing Dharm my all sins got destroyed. Then I went to Indra Lok and came to Bhoo Lok after living there for long time. Here also I was born among Vishnu Bhakt. I remember my past life, that is why I always try to worship Vishnu and know the effect of Ekaadashee Vrat. When I did it only helplessly then I got this fruit, then if somebody does it with Bhakti, what is in this world one cannot get?"

Gaalav Muni got very happy to hear this and told him the correct method of worshipping Bhagavaan.
