Matsya And Koorm Avataar

Paarvatee Jee said - "Maheshwar, Now you tell me about Bhagavaan's glory - Matsya and Koorm Avataars etc." Mahaadev Jee said - "Hey Paarvatee, As many lamps can be lit from one lamp, in the same way there are several Avataar of Bhagavaan. They are different by "Paraavadth", "Vyooh" and "Vibhav" etc. Several Avataar have been told of Vishnu. Brahmaa Jee created 9 Prajaapati - Bhrigu, Mareechi, Atri, Daksh, Kardam, Pulastya, Pulah, Angiraa, and Kratu. Mareechi had a son named Kashyap Jee. Kashyap Jee had 4 wives - Aditi, Diti, Kadroo and Vinataa. Aditi gave birth to Devtaa and Diti gave birth to Tamo Gunee sons who became great Asur. Their names are - Makar, Hayagreev, Hiranyaaksh, Hiranyakashyap, Jambh, Maya etc. Makar was very mighty. He deluded Brahmaa Jee, took all four Ved from him and entered the ocean. The whole world became A-Dharmee. Brahmaa Jee went to Vishnu and prayed Him to bring Ved back taken by Makar." Mahaadev Jee said - "Hey Paarvatee, Then Vishnu assumed the form of Matsya (fish), entered the ocean and killed the Daitya by tearing him with his mouth's front part. He handed over all Ved to Brahmaa Jee." (see Padm, 5-Uttar-37 here)

Koorm Avataar

Mahaadev Jee said - "Now you listen to Koorm (Tortoise) Avataar's story. Maharshi Atri's son Durvaasaa was very glorious Muni. He was a great Tapaswee, a very angry Muni and could shake the Tri-Lok. Once it so happened that he went to Swarg Lok to see Indra. At that time Indra was going somewhere riding on his Airaavat elephant. Durvaasaa got very happy to see him. He presented a garland of Paarijaat flowers to him. Dev Raaj took it and threw it on the head of elephant and set off for Nandan Van. Now that elephant was very intoxicated so he took off that garland and threw it on the ground crushing it. Durvaasaa got angry at this, he cursed Indra - "You have insulted me because of your wealth, that is why all wealth of Tri-Lok will be destroyed."

Hearing Durvaasa's curse Indra went back to his city and his all wealth got disappeared. Brahmaa etc Devtaa, Gandharv, Yaksh, Kinnar, Daitya, Daanav, Naag, human beings, Naag, all living beings became poor. So all went to Brahmaa Jee and said - "Bhagavan, All living beings are afflicted. You are the Lord of the three Lok, please protect us." Brahmaa Jee said - "All this has happened because of Indra's misbehavior. He has made Durvaasaa angry, now until she will be pleased, everybody will be afflicted like this. So let us go and worship Naaraayan. When He will be pleased then only all will be happy." So all Devtaa along with Brahmaa Jee went to Ksheer Saagar and prayed Vishnu with Purush Sookt. They did Jap of 8-letter Mantra and Paath of Purush Sookt and then did Yagya praying with Divine Stotra.

Pleased with their worship, Vishnu appeared and said - "I wish to give you boon, ask what do you want?" All Devtaa said - "Bhagavan, All the three Lok have lost their wealth by the curse of Durvaasaa Muni, that is why we have come in your shelter." Bhagavaan said - "Since by the curse of Durvaasaa Muni Lakshmee has disappeared, so you go, uproot the Mandarachal Parvat and keep it in Ksheer Saagar. Treat is as the churning rod, and use Vaasuki Naag as the churning rope. Then you along with Gandharv and Asur, churn the Saagar. Lakshmee will surely appear and by her grace you will be again rich. I Myself will assume the form of a Koorm (tortoise) and support it on my back; and I will make Devtaa more powerful by entering their body."

All Devtaa, Gandharv etc uprooted Mandaraachal Parvat and kept it in Ksheer Saagar. Bhagavaan assumed the form of Koorm and supported the Parvat. Devtaa took Vaasuki Naag wrapped it around the Parvat and started churning the sea. When Devtaa etc were churning the sea, all Maharshi kept fast and started doing Paath of Shree Sookt and Vishnu Sahastra Naam. This Manthan started on pure Ekaadashee Tithi.

First of all (1) Kaalkoot named poison appeared from the sea. It was in the form of a big mass. Devtaa etc all whoever were there started running seeing it, so I said to them - "Don't run, I will eat it." Hearing this Devtaa fell on my feet and started praying me. I meditated on Naaraayan and drank that terrible poison doing Jap of His three name Mantra. Because of the effect of His three name Mantra, I digested it very easily. Achyut, Anant and Govind are the three names of Hari.

After this (2) Daridraa, the elder sister of Lakshmee, appeared. She was wearing red clothes. She asked Devtaa - "What are the orders for me?" Devtaa said - "Who quarrel everyday, you go to their house with A-Mangal and live there. Where people speak harshly, speak lies, sleep in the evening, do Aachaman without washing feet, you live in their house only." Devtaa again started churning the sea, and this time (3) Vaarunee with beautiful eyes came out of the sea. She was taken by Naag Raaj Ananat. Then came out (4) a beautiful woman who was taken by Garud. After this came out (5) Divine Apsaraa, and (6) Gandharv. After them (7) Airaavat elephant, (8) Uchchaishravaa horse, (9) Dhanvantari Vaidya, (10) Paarijaat tree, and (11) Surabhi cow who fulfilled all wishes appeared from the sea. They all were taken by Indra.

After all these, on the morning of Dwaadashee (12) Lakshmee appeared. The whole world got very happy. Then came out (13) Chandramaa who is Lakshmee's brother and make everybody comfortable. He is the Lord of Nakshatra and Maamaa of whole the world. Then came out Hari's  wife (14) Tulasee Devee who is pure holy. She has appeared only to worship Hari. All Devtaa kept Mandaraachal at its place and prayed Lakshmee with her Sahastra Naam then with Shree Sookt. Lakshme, pleased with their prayers, said to them - "Ask for any Var, I wish to bestow you with a Var." Devtaa said - "Be pleased with us and always live in the heart of Vishnu; never be separated from Bhagavaan and never abandon the three Lok." Lakshmee said - "So be it." Naaraayan and Brahmaa Jee also appeared on the shore of Ksheer Saagar. Devtaa said to Vishnu - "Please accept Lakshmee as your wife who will never be separated from you." They made them sit on a Divine seat and worshipped them with various clothes and ornaments and Divine fruits. They worshipped them with Tulasee who appeared from the Saagar. Later Bhagavaan also bestowed them with Var.

Bhagavaan said - "Listen you all, Ekaadashee Tithi is very holy. It pacifies all kinds of troubles. You kept fast to have Lakshmee's Darshan. So from today whoever will keep fast on Ekaadashee and worship me with Lakshmee and Tulasee, they all will attain my Lok being free from any bondage." And Vishnu went to Ksheer Saagar. There He lives with Ramaa on Shesh Naag. After that Devtaa worshipped Kashchap form of Bhagavaan. He also asked them to ask for any Var. Devtaa said - "You support this Prithvi along with Shesh Naag and Diggaj (elephants)." He said - "So be it." And supported Prithvi with seven Dweep.

Since then by the order of Bhagavaan, Brahmaa etc Devtaa, Siddh, Yogee, and Muni all keep fast on Ekaadashee and worship Vishnu on Dwaadashee."
