To these Manu adds a 5th one, that is Aatm Vidyaa - knowledge of the Soul. (see No 4) Even others add to them four Up-Ved making the division as 18.

The Vedaang are Shikshaa (science of proper articulation), Kalp (ceremonial), Vyaakaran (linguistic analysis or grammar), Nirukt (explanation of difficult Vaidik words) Jyotish (astronomy) and Chhand (Meter). These are regarded as auxiliary too and in some sense as part of the Ved.

(3) Vidyaa is the feminine Mantra, the sex of Mantra changing with that of its presiding Devtaa.  OR
The Mantra whose Devtaa is a Devee or female.

(4) Four Ved, Ved's six parts, Meemaansaa, Nyaaya Shaastra, Puraan and Dharm Shaastra - these are 14 Vidyaa (branches of knowledge). The rest is called Vigyaan.
