Jyeshth, Ashaadh and Shraavan Ekaadashee Vrat

Jyeshth Krishn Ekaadashe A-Paraa and Shukla Ekaadashee Nir-Jalaa - "Krishn further said - Jyeshth Krishn Ekaadashee is called A-Paraa Ekaadashee. It destroys even the greatest sins. Whatever Punya one gets by taking bath in Maagh month, or observing fast on Shiv Raatri in Kaashee, or by doing Pind Daan in Gayaa, or by taking bath in Godaavaree when Brihaspati (Jupiter) is in Sinh Raashi (Leo Sign), the same Punya one gets by keeping fast on this day and worshipping Vaaman Bhagavaan.

Now Vyaas Jee will tell you the importance of Jyeshth Shukla Nir-Jalaa Ekaadashee." Ved Vyaas Jee said - "One should not eat food on both Ekaadashee of Jyeshth month. Worship Bhagavaan Keshav with flowers after taking bath, feed Braahman and then take food himself. One should not eat food even in Birth Sootak and Death Sootak on Ekaadashee days." Hearing this Bheemsen said - "Pitaamaha, Yudhishthir, mother, Draupadee, Arjun, Nakul and Sahadev - all do not take food on Ekaadashee and tell me also not to take food, but I cannot tolerate hunger." Vyaas Jee said - "If you prefer to go to Swarg and hate Narak, then do not take food on both Ekaadashee." Bheemsen said - "Pitaamaha, I tell you the truth, even after taking food once, I cannot keep fast, then how can I keep complete fast. I have Vrik named Agni in my stomach and that subsides only after I eat a lot. That is why I can keep only one day fast in one year. Tell me some Vrat which I can keep. I will surely observe it."

Vyaas Jee said - "Bheem, In Jyeshth month, when Soorya is in Vrish Raashi (Taurus sign) or in Mithun Raashi (Gemini sign), keep fast on Shukla Ekaadashee, and if possible do not drink water. Except to do Aachaman one should not drink any kind of water, otherwise Vrat is broken. If he doesn't drink water from Ekaadashee sunrise to next day sunrise, then only this Vrat is completed. On Dwaadashee one should eat food with Braahman. One can get all Ekaadashee's fruit by observing only this Nir-Jalaa Ekaadashee. Who keeps fast on Ekaadashee, Yam's messenger do not come to him, rather Vishnu's messengers come and take him. Who donates Ann, clothes, cow, water, bed, Aasan, Kamandal, or umbrella on this day he goes to Swarg Lok. Hearing this Bheem started keeping fast on this day, since then it became known as "Paandav Ekaadashee".

Aashaadh Krishn Ekaadashee Yoginee and Shukla Ekaadashee Shayanee - "Krishn further said - Aashaadh Krishn Ekaadashee also destroys all kinds of sins. Kuber lives in Alakaa Puree. He always worships Shiv. He had a Yaksh servant named Hemmaalee who used to bring flowers for Kuber's worship. His wife Vishaalaakshee was very beautiful. He loved her very much. One day, after bringing flowers he stayed back in his house so he couldn't reach Kuber's house. Kuber was worshipping Shiv. He waited for flowers till mid-day, but when he didn't see his servant, he became angry and asked his other servants about him.

They said, "He is in his house." Kuber sent for him, Hemmaalee got scared. Seeing him Kuber said to him - "O sinner, Be a leper and go somewhere else from here." He fell down, he became a leper, but he didn't lose his memory because of Shiv worship. He went to Meru Parvat, there he met Maarkandeya Rishi. He greeted him from a distance, Muni got pity on him, he called him near and asked him - "How did you get this leprosy?" Yaksh said - "I am the servant of Kuber, my name is Hemmaalee. I used to bring him flowers from Maansarovar for his Shiv worship. One day I stayed back home and could not take flowers on time, that is why he gave me Shaap. Because of my some good Karm, I have come to you, please guide me." Maarkandeya Jee said - "Since you have spoken the truth, I tell you, that you should keep fast on Aashaadh Krishn Ekaadashee, "Yoginee", you will certainly be cured of this disease." He did that and he became all right. Keeping fast on this day is equal to feeding 88,000 Braahman."

Krishn further said - "Aashaadh Shukla Ekaadashee is called Shayanee or Harishayanee Ekaadashee. It also destroys all kinds of sins and gives Moksh. My one form lives in Bali's house on this day, another one sleeps in Ksheer Saagar till Kaartik Shukla Ekaadashee comes. Therefore one should follow Dharm during these days. Keep wake in the night and worship Vishnu. Since during these four months Vishnu sleeps, that is why one should sleep on floor. One should not eat leafy vegetables in Shraavan; yogurt in Bhaadrapad; milk in Aashwin; and Daal (broken beans) in Kaartik. Only Shraavan, Bhaadrapad, Aashwin and Kaartik Krishn Ekaadashe are good for Grihasth people, not the other ones. All Shukla Paksh Ekaadashee should be observed."

Shraavan Krishn Ekaadashee Kaamikaa and Krishn Ekaadashee Putradaa - Krishn further said - "I tell you a dialog between Brahmaa Jee and Naarad Jee. Brahmaa Jee said - "Who donates the whole earth, his Punya is like the Punya earned by keeping fast on Kaamikaa Ekaadashee. Who does Deep Daan on Ekaadashee, day and night, even Chitragupt cannot measure his Punya. One should light lamp (with Ghee or sesame seed oil) in front of Krishn on this day.

Shraavan Shukla Ekaadashee is called Putradaa Ekaadashee. In ancient times, in the beginning of Dwaapar Yug, King Maheejit ruled in Maahishmatee Pur. He had no son, so he was very sad. Once he said to his people - "I have not committed any sin in this life, still I do not have any son, please think over it and tell me what is the reason for it?" They all went to forest and looked for some Rishi Muni, so they met Lomash Muni there. His body was full of Lom (furs). As one Kalp passed, one hair of his body used to fall, that is why his name was Lomash. He knows all about past, present and future. People got very happy to see him. Muni asked them the reason of their coming to him. They said - "Our present king Maheejit has no son, please tell us some way so that he can get son."

Hearing this Lomash Muni meditated for two Ghadee (45 minutes). He knew the account of his previous life and said to them - "King Maheejit was a poor Vaishya who took money from people in an unjustified way. One day, in Jyesth month Shukla Dashamee, he came to a pond and thought to drink water from it, that a cow came there with her calf. She was thirsty so she started drinking water from that pond. Vaishya pushed the cow away and drank water himself, that is why the King has no son, but because of some other Punya done in some other life he is born as king." People asked the Praayashchit for his sin. Muni said - "Shraavan Shukla Ekaadashee is known as Putradaa Ekaadashee. It fulfills all desires, so you should keep fast on that day." Hearing that they kept fast on that day, did Jaagaran also and gave its Punya to king. By the grace of Bhagavaan he had a son after some time."
