6-Brahmaa's Heads In favor of Gautamee Gangaa River Pratishthaan Pur Once there was a war between the gods and the demons and the gods lost. The gods came to Brahmaa for advice and Brahma asked them to pray to Shiv. When Shiv appeared before them, the gods said, "The demons have defeated us. Please kill them and save us." Shiv went to fight with the demons. He drove the demons off from Mount Sumeru and out of the Heaven. He pursued them to the ends of the Earth. All this exertion made Shiv sweat. And wherever the drops of sweat fell down on the ground, terrible aggressors named Maatri were created. The Maatri also started to kill the demons and pursued them down to the underworld. While the Maatri were killing the demons in the underworld, Brahmaa and the other Devtaa waited on the banks of the river Gautamee Gangaa. This place came to be known as Pratishthaan Pur. When the Maatri had killed all the demons, they came back to Earth and began to live on the banks of the Gautamee Gangaa. This Teerth has come to be known as Maatri Teerth. Brahmaa's Donkey Head The gods prayed to Shiv and Shiv agreed to cut off Brahmaa's fifth head - the donkey head. But what was to be done with the severed head? The Earth refused to bear it and so did the ocean. Finally it was decided that Shiv himself would bear the head. The place where Shiv cut off Brahma's fifth head is known as Rudra Teerth. Ever since that day, Brahmaa appeared with four heads and is known as Chaturmukh. Brahm Teerth There is a temple to Brahmaa on the banks of the Gautamee Gangaa. This is a holy place known as Brahm Teerth. A killer of Braahman is pardoned his sin if he visits this temple.
