2-Kashyap's Children
The names of thirteen daughters who were married to sage Kashyap were Aditi,
Diti, Danu, Arishtaa, Surasaa, Khasaa, Surabhi, Vinataa, Taamraa, Krodhavashaa,
Idaa, Kadru and Muni. They had their children like this --
1. Aditi
Aditi's sons were the twelve gods known as the Aaditya. Their names were Vishnu, Sakra,
Aryamaa, Dhaataa, Vidhaataa, Twashtaa, Pooshaa, Vivaswaan, Savitaa, Mitraavarun, Ansh
and Bhag.
2. Diti
Diti's sons were called Daitya (demons). They were named Hiranyaaksh and Hiranyakashyap,
and amongst their descendants were several other powerful Daitya like Bali and Baanaasur.
Diti also had a daughter named Sinhikaa who was married to a Daanav (Danu's sons were called
Daanav) named Viprachitti. Their off springs were terrible Daanav - Vaataapi, Namuchi, Ilval,
Maareech and the Nivaat Kavach.
Many people may be recollecting the Nava Graha Stotra for Raahu mentioning Sinhikaa as
his mother -
"Ardh kaayam, Mahaaveeryam Chandraatitya vimardanam
Sinhikaa garbh sambhootam, Tam raahum pranamaamyaham"
3. Danu
Danu had hundred sons who came to be known as Daanav. The Daanav were thus
cousins to the Daitya and also to the Aaditya. In the Daanav line were born
like the Paulomaa and Kaalakeya.
4. Arishtaa
Arishtaa's sons were the Gandharv (singers of heaven). Now we know the origin of
Gandharv. They were the children born to sage Kashyap from his wife Arishtaa.
5. Surasaa
Surasaa gave birth to the Sarp (snakes).
5. Khasaa
Khasaa's children were the Yaksh (demi-gods) who were the companions of Kuber (the god
of wealth) and the Raakshas (demons).
7. Surabhi
Surabhi's descendants were cows and buffaloes.
8.Vinataa
Vinataa had two sons named Arun and Garud. Garud became the king of the birds and the ride
of Vishnu and Arun became the charioteer of Soorya Dev.
9. Taamraa
Taamraa had six daughters. From these daughters were born owls, eagles, vultures, crows,
water-fowl, horses, camels and donkeys.
10. Krodhvashaa
Krodhvashaa had fourteen thousand children known as Naag (snakes). Sarp are considered more
divine comparing to Naag.
11 Ilaa
Ilaa gave birth to trees, creepers, shrubs and bushes.

Kadru's sons were also known as Naag or snakes. Among the more important of Kadru's sons
were Anant, Vaasuki, Takshak and Nahush.
13. Muni
Muni gave birth to the Apsaraa (dancers of heaven). Hence according to Brahm Puraan, all
celestial dancers like Urvashee, Menakaa, Rambhaa, Tilottamaa etc are the daughters of
sage Kashyap and Muni.
Thus the whole Prithvi was filled with Kashyap's children.
