Arjun's Marriage to Draupadee

Paandav were hiding in forest in disguise of Braahman after the Baaranaavat Laakshaa Grih episode on the advice of Vidur Jee. Once when they were living with a Braahman family in Ekchakraa Nagaree, some Braahman stayed near their house. After talking to them Kuntee and Paandav came to know that , they were going to Paanchaal Desh as there was the Swayamvar of its princess. Kuntee expressed her surprise hearing this - "How come that its princess has grown so much that her father was organizing her Swayamvar?" (to read about this read Drupad Asks for a Son to Kill Drone)

Paandav Go to Paanchaal Desh
So they went to attend the Swayamvar of Draupadee. Krishn, Balaraam, Duroyodhan (Dhritraashtra's son), Dushaasan, Jayadrath and Karn (Kuntee's first-born son from Soorya) etc were also there. On the way to Paanchaal Desh, Arjun fought Angaarparn named Gandharv, defeated him and learnt Chaakshushee Vidyaa from him By its power, one could see whatever he wished to see and in whatever way he liked.

Raajaa Drupad had built a machine in which there was a revolving fish on the top and at the bottom of it was a pond of oil. One had to aim its right eye looking at the shadow of the fish in the oil. In fact Drupad built it keeping Arjun in mind. When all Paandav entered the court, they were in Braahman's guise, so nobody could recognize them. Rather they were surprised to see them there as what Braahman were doing there? Duryodhan tried to aim but he could not even move the bow. Then Karn got up and tried. He picked the bow and came to the place where that machine was. He was about to shoot it, that Draupadee looked at Krishn and Krishn told her through His gesture that she should refuse to marry him. Draupadee immediately got up and said that "I will not marry a Soot-Putra."

At this Karn felt very insulted, he got very angry too, so he said - "Raajaa should have thought this before inviting me here." He kept the bow and arrow at its place and came back to his seat. Then Krishn said to Arjun through His gesture that he should come forward and pierce the fish's eye.

Arjun got up and pierced the eye of the fish. He was married to Draupadee and all Paandav brought Draupadee home. All Raajaa including Raajaa Drupad and his son Dhrishtdyumn couldn't do anything as the condition of the marriage was fulfilled. All thought that a Braahman took Draupadee in spite of many Kshatriya present at the court.

On their way Paandav were talking that "We will surprise our Maa today." So when they arrived at the door, one of them said - "See Maa, what we have got for Bhikshaa (alms) today?" As usual Kuntee said from inside - "Distribute it among yourself."

After saying this she thought, why did they tell me like this that "See what have we got in Bhikshaa." She came out to see and stunned to see a beautiful girl with her sons. She asked "What is this? Is this the Bhikshaa you were talking about? And you call her Bhikshaa?" "We are sorry, Maa". But now nothing could be done and Kuntee was repenting on what she had said unknowingly.

The then Krishn came and Kuntee told the whole incident to Krishn. Then Krishn told the story of Draupadee's previous life, (see "Another Story Told by Krishn") and assured Kuntee that she had not done anything wrong. Then only Kuntee got relieved and thus Draupadee became the wife of five Paandav.

Draupadee's father, Raajaa Drupad got worried seeing a Braahman taking his daughter, but could not do anything because he had fulfilled the condition. So Drupad sent his son Dhrishtdyumn to check as who was that Braahman who took his daughter. He followed them and found that they were Paandav and now Draupadee was the wife of all the five brothers, not only of Arjun. He got sad by finding this fact, but then he heard Krishn's statement also, so he was satisfied.

He came back to Paanchaal Desh and told everything to his father. He told the reason also of this which Krishn told Kuntee. King took a sigh of relief because of the news that Paandav were alive and his wish was fulfilled and Draupadee was married to Arjun. Because he was very much worried when he heard that Paandav and their mother had died in Baarnnaavat accident.

Arjun's Contribution to Khaandav Van Kingdom
As Bheeshm came to know about Paandav that they were alive and were married to Draupadee, he insisted Dhritraashtra to invite Paandav with the would-be queen to Hastinaapur. In spite of his own and Duryodhan's will Dhritraashtra had to invite them. Then all insisted him to handover the kingdom to Yudhishthir. But this he could not do because first thing he himself did not want to give it to them; second, Duryodhan under the influence of Shakuni was adamant not to leave Hastinaapur at any cost. He threatened Dhritraashtra to give up his life if Paandav were not separated from him. So Dhritraashtra had to divide Hastinaapur in two, and an un-arable, thorny, uneven land of Khaandav Van was given to Paandav as their kingdom.

Arjun burned Khaandav Van to please Agni Dev on the advice of Krishn. Pleased with the food offered by Arjun, Agni Dev gave him several weapons - Gaandeev bow, two quivers which were always full, a chariot with white horses and a banner with an ape on it etc. Arjun saved the life of Maya Daanav who was living in that Van, so to show his gratitude he built a Divine royal court for Yudhishthir's new kingdom - Indraprasth. In it people used to see water where dry land was, and the dry land where water was flowing. They used to find a door where they saw the wall, and hit themselves with a wall where they thought there was a door.

When Maya Daanav built the royal court for Paandav, he brought Devdatt conch of Varun for Arjun, and a mace for Bheem.

My Note
Shree Krishn was his maternal uncle's (Maamaa) son and both of them loved each other very much. Shree Krishn always guided Arjun throughout his adult life.
