Dhrishtdyumn

Dhrishtdyumn is a Mahaabhaarat character. He was one of the ten sons of Raajaa Drupad. He was born from a Havan Kund with his sister Draupadee. His other well-known brothers are Satyajit, Shikhandee, Uttamaujaa, Yudhaamanyu. He had a son named Kshatradharm.

Raajaa Drupad wanted a son to kill Dronaachaarya, because Drupad had a long time enmity with him. Besides he had the appreciation for Arjun also, when he defeated him and made captive for Drone to pay his Guru Dakshinaa. At that time he wished that if he had a daughter, he would have married her to Arjun. So he wanted a son who could kill Drone and a daughter whom he could marry to Arjun. So he arranged for a Yagya which could give him a son like that. When the Rishi did the Yagya which caused a chariot to appear in which a handsome youth was sitting in a warrior attire, Drupad got very happy to see him and got assured that he would surely kill Drone. Then appeared a very beautiful woman who was worthy bride for Arjun. Thus both were Divine children - they were named as Dhrishtdyumn and Krishnaa, better known as Draupadee.

Drupad's Enmity With Drone
It happened thus that both Drone and Drupad, were in the same Gurukul to study. They were very fast friends. Drupad once said to Drone that whatever he had, its half would be his. Drone heard it but he didn't say anything. He did not want anything from others, but he kept it in his mind.

Drupad was a prince. So after finishing his education he went back to his kingdom and later became the King. On the other side Drone was a Braahman. He was married to Kripee (sister of Kripaachaarya and daughter of Maharshi Sharadwaan and Urvashee - an Apsaraa). He could not get anything to live up on for quite some time.

In the meantime, they got a son also Ashwatthaamaa. When he was too young, he wanted to drink milk, but there was no milk in the house. So Kripee gave him flour mixed in water instead of milk. Drone saw it. He became extremely sad. He decided to go to his old time friend Drupad who said that "whatever is mine, half of it is yours". He went there and reminding him of his saying, asked only for one cow from him from his share of his belongings. But Drupad said "It was only child's talks said in a playful mood. How it could be possible that I could share my half wealth with you?"  and refused to give the cow to him. He was ready to give it as donation but not as Kripaa's share, while Kripaa didn't want donation, he wanted from his own share. Drone came back with an ill feeling in his heart, but this incident left the seed of enmity in Drupad's heart as well as in Drone's heart.

For the same reason Drupad did a Yagya to get a son who could kill Drone. When the Rishi wanted to offer Aahuti, he asked for his wife. Raajaa told that she was taking bath. It was getting late so the Rishi offered the Aahuti and incidentally that Aahuti was for a girl. So Agni Dev appeared from the Havan Kund carrying a beautiful girl. Though Raajaa was very happy to see that beautiful girl, but still since his aim was to get a son to kill Drone, so another Aahuti was offered. Another time Agni Dev appeared with a young man. He was named Dhrishtdyumn. The daughter was named Krishnaa.

Dhrishtdyumn Killed Drone
In Mahaabhaarat war he was the Commander-in-Chief of Paandav army. He did kill Dronaachaarya, but in a very sad state. For the first 10 days, Bheesham Pitaamaha was the Commander-in-Chief of Kaurav Army. After his falling down, Dronaachaarya was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief. Dronaachaarya was also killing many soldiers from Paandav army, and it was getting difficult to get over with him.

Then Krishn advised that "Once Drone said that "I will not take weapon any more if I hear the news of my son Ashwatthaamaa's death in battlefield." So according to this statement if somebody could convince him that his son had died then he would not fight any more, and then he could be killed easily. And if Yudhishthir is ready to convince him for this news then it is better because he can easily convince him for this as he never lies."

Yudhishthir was not ready to tell lies to his Guru, but somehow he had to agree for it. So next day this strategy was to be implemented. When the time came, Yudhishthir hesitated to tell lies, so Bheem went and killed an elephant named Ashwatthaamaa and shouted "Ashwatthaamaa died". When Drone heard this, he got stunned, he couldn't believe it (because he was immortal). He said - "If Yudhishthir will say this to me, then I will believe it." So he asked Yudhishthir - "Is it true that Ashwatthaamaa died?" Yudhishthir said - "Yes, Ashwatthaamaa died." to him and he got convinced. He didn't ask any other question. He dropped his weapons and just sat down on the ground.

He knew that his time had come, all his weapons had left him. he also left his body through Yog. Then only Dhrishtdyumn killed armless Dronaachaarya. Once Dhrishtdyumn told also that it was against the rules of the war, but Krishn said - "This whole war is against the rules, so don't worry about it."
