11. Arjun's Special Characteristics

Arjun was Nar and as a Nar he had many special characteristics. Not only he had 10 names which themselves showed his special characteristics, he has shown many other special characteristics in his life. He was the only person in Mahaabhaarat period who lived again after being killed in a battle. See Arjun After War-2

Arjun's Ten Names
Arjun's ten names are very important to know. Arjun himself has told these names in Mahaabhaarat, Viraat Parv, to Uttar, when Uttar doubted his identity in the battle field while he had gone to fight with Kaurav and Brihannalaa was his Saarathee. In fact all Paandav and Draupadee were living there hiding their identity because they had to pass one year in Agyaatvaas according to the condition of the dice game which they lost 13 years ago.

Arjun himself tells the following ten names for himself. When Paandav were spending their one year period of incognito at Viraat's place, and Bheem had killed Keechak, this killing rose a doubt in Shakuni's mind that nobody else could kill Keechak except Bheem. He had a valid reason. Keechak was very mighty. He had 10,000 elephant's power. And there were only four people who were greater in strength than Indra - Balaraam, Bheem, Shalya, and Keechak. Since everybody else than Bheem was in Kaurav's camp, that is why only Bheem was the possibility who could kill him.

So in the happiness that they had found Paandav during their incognito period Duryodhan invaded Viraat Nagar. First he sent Susharmaa to divert Viraat's attention, and when Viraat had gone to fight with Susharmaa, they invaded Viraat Nagar. Uttar was too young to go to fight with Kaurav, Yudhishthir suggested that he should take Brihannalaa with him. Since Brihannalaa was working as a eunuch, Uttar made a mockery of him that how he would work as a Saarathee, but somehow it was managed.

Now Arjun could not have fought without his weapons, so he went to that tree where they hid their weapons. When Arjun showed him the weapons and told him the names of the owners of those weapons, Uttar still did not believe it. In the last he said - "Now you will say that this Arjun's Gaandeev." Arjun said - "Exactly." "And you are Arjun?" "You are right." Still Uttar did not believe him. Then he threw his last question - "If your Arjun then tell me Arjun's ten names." At that time Arjun tells him his ten names. These ten names are as follows :-

1. Arjun - My complexion is unique like Arjun tree, and my name is stainless, that is why I am named Arjun.

2. Phaalgun - I was born on the slopes of Himvaan in a place called Satsring on a day when the star Uttaraa Phaalgunee was in ascendant, that is why my name is Phaalgun.

3. Jishnu - I am called Jishnu because I am terrible when I am angry.

4. Kiriti - My father Indra gave me a beautiful crown when I was with him, that is why I am called Kiriti.

5. Shwetvaahan - My horses which were given to me by Agni Dev, are white, that is why I am called Shwetvaahan.

6. Vibhatsu - I have never fought by unfair means in any battle that is why I am called Vibhatsu.

7. Vijaya - I always fight till end and I always win, that is why I am called Vijaya.

8. Paarth - My mother's name is Prithaa, so I am also called Paarth.

9. Savyashachee - I never frighten my enemies by meanness, I can use my both hands when I shoot my arrows, that is why I am called Savyashachee.

10. Dhananjaya - I was called Dhananjaya when I conquered all the kings at the time of Raajsooya Yagya and collected lots of wealth from all of them.
Note
Although Arjun has not said this to Uttar but this is true - Dhananjaya is one name of Vishnu also. It is mentioned in Vishnu Sahastra Naam  (couplet 70) and in Geetaa (10/57) as a Vibhooti of Krishn - "Among Paandav I am Arjun".

When Uttar heard this, then only he believed him that he was Arjun and he started trembling with fear.

Arjun's Special Characteristics
Arjun had many special characteristics compared to others...

(1) Arjun was a part of Naaraayan
Arjun was not only the son of Indra, but he was the incarnation of Nar and that is how he was the part of Naaraayan. Ad that is why Krishn was right. He was Arjun among Paandav. WHY? Dharm had a son named Naaraayan. Naaraayan produced Nar from His own body and that is how there were Nar nad Naaraayan - both were one. Both did penance for long time in Badaree forest. This shows that Arjun was a part of Krishn. That is why Krishn said - "Among Paandav I am Arjun."

(2) It was only Arjun who was lucky enough to hear Geetaa from God's own mouth and see God's Viraat Roop with his own eyes. Sanjaya's case is different.

(3) Arjun could use his both hands to shoot arrows.

(4) He was so fast i shooting arrows, that when his one bow string was broken people could not see him changing the bow string. All they could see the circle made by pulling the string of his bow while shooting the arrow.

(5) He never lost any battle, except two - one was from Shiv, and he other one from his son, but that was because of a curse. That is why his one name was Vijaya.

(6) As Nar he had the control over Apsaraa and water. One should know that Apsaraa are born from water. The examples of his control over Apsaraa and water are --
----When he was only a child he saved Drone from the water creature crocodile
----When he became young His prowess over water while he was burning Khaandav forest - Indra made rain fall over it to put out the fire .... but he succeeded to stop that water
----When he was in Heaven to take Divine weapos, he could restrain over Urvashee - the most beautiful Apsaraa of Indra's court. She was the same Apsaraa after whom his ancestor Pururavaa was so mad
----He rescued five Apsaraa who were living in water in the form of crocodile from curse.
----He brought water for Bheeshm too when he fell in the battlefield and asked for water

(7) He had full control over Kaam
----He remained calm when Uloopee abducted him to her Naag Kingdom under water.
----He had full control over Kaam, as he had control over Kaam Dev's vehicle crocodile too - Drone incident and the rescue of five Apsaraa in crocodile form.
----Because he had full control on Kaam that is why Drone considered him a worthy person to learn Brahmaastra. Ashwatthaamaa could not learn it in full and he was jealous with Arjun on this matter.

Arjun's Divine Astra
Everybody knows that Arjun went to Swarg to obtain Divine weapons to get prepared for MBH war on the advice of Kishn. Many of them, though were not used, but still were the great confidence boost. Apart from other weapons his some Divine weapons are quite known - such as
--Brahmaastra which he got from Drone
--Pashupataastra which he got from Shiv after fighting with him

But many of them he did not use except when he went to kill Nivaat Kavach and Kaalakeya Raakshas.
On the night of Abhimanyu's killing, he had a dream and he went to Shiv with Krishn to take Pashupataastra - but he had already taken it even before starting the war - then why?

Its reason was that Bheeshm had Paashupat Astra that is why Arjun required to have it. It was for balancing the weapons at both sides. Bheeshm defeated his Guru Parashuraam from this weapon only. But after Bheeshm had felled, after 10 days, Arjun did not need it, so he returned it to Shiv. Later he needed it unexpectedly to kill Jayadrath (who was a great devotee of Shiv), he had to get it again from Shiv, and that is why he went to Shiv, accompanied by Krishn, in his astral body to take it again.
