Uttar is a Mahaabharat character. He was the youngest son of Raajaa Viraat and his wife Sudeshnaa. Uttar's real name was Bhoominjaya. He had two brothers more named Shwet and Shankh. He had a sister also named Uttaraa who was the student of Arjun (Brihannalaa) to learn dance and music. Paandav were spending their one year of incognito there at that time.
As Durodhan came to know that Keechak had been killed, he could make out that this was the wok of Bheem only. In anticipation that he has broken Paandav's Agyaatvaas period, Duryodhan asked Susharmaa to divert the King Viraat's attention to Susharmaa. Viraat went to fight with Susharmaa and Duryodhan attacked Matsya Desh.
Since Viraat had gone to fight with Susharmaa the previous day and did not return till then, Uttar was the only person remained in Viraat Nagar to protect his country. So he had to go to fight with Kaurav army. Draupadee advised him to take Brihannalaa as his Saarathee. Although Uttar was not happy with her suggestion but still not finding any other alternative he took him as his Saarathee. When they reached in the battlefield, Uttar ran away seeing the great Kaurav army, but Arjun would not let him run away. He caught him, and brought him back on the chariot.
Arjun then asked him to drive his chariot and he himself planned to fight with Kaurav. Poor Uttar was still wondering that how an eunuch could fight with such a big powerful army. Arjun tok him to that Shame tree over which they hid their weapons. When he took down those weapons, Uttar could not even blink his eyes for a few moments. How could he use such great weapons? Then Arjun exposed himself to him that he was Arjun himself. Still he did not believe him and asked to tell him Arjun's 10 names. Arjun told him his 10 names with their meanings, the only he could believe that he was Arjun. After knowing this he asked for his forgiveness repeatedly and showed his foolishness to use him as his Saarathee.
Arjun forgave him everything and asked him not to disclose this secret in any case, he would disclose it himself. But at that time told him his Kshatriya Dharm ad asked him to rive his chariot towards Kaurav. Then both went to fight with Kaurav army. Of course Arjun alone defeated Kaurav army, kept his weapons on Shamee tree gain and came back to Viraat Nagar as if Uttar was a warrior and Arjun was a Saarathee. Uttar came back to the city as the winner of the war.
Uttar was the first son of Viraat killed by Bheeshm in Mahaabhaarat war on its 1st day.
