What is Kaal Sarp Yog?
One House has 30 degrees. Raahu and Ketu lie on 180 degree axis. When all Planets lie between these two Planets in Natal Chart, there is Kaal Sarp Yog. Any Planet beyond this axis saves Kaal Sarp Yog. The Kaal Sarp Yog is a dreaded Yog that can cause one's life to be painful and miserable. It gives rise to misfortunes and is supposed to be a major obstruction to ones progress. A person under the affliction of this Yog leads a life of pain and misfortune. If it is highly afflicted. This Yog has the capacity to cancel out all the good Yog of the chart.

Complete Kaal Sarp Yog is formed basically only when half of the chart is unoccupied by planets. Even if one planet is outside the Raahu Ketu Axis there is no Kaal Sarp Yog. Before you do any remedies for the Kaal Sarp Yog make sure that all planets are between Raahu and Ketu. Even if there is one planet outside the Raahu Ketu axis the Kaal Sarp Yog does not exist. Do not confuse Kaal Sarp Yog with Naag Dosh or Kaarak Dosh. This Dosh is said to be severe when all planets are within the arc from Raahu to Ketu in their natural motion direction.

Vaidik Basis of Kaal Sarp Yog?
By Vinay Jhaa in JR Group, on Sep 3, 2012
See also   Ashwalaayan's Grihya Sootra

Ashwalaayan Grihya Sootra (see also Sootra) describes Graha Poojan (worship of astrological planets) methods in detail, in which the verses on Raahu include methods for "Sarp Kaal" which is another form of Kaal Sarp. The online version of Ashwalaayan Grihya Sootra is prepared by careless typists who omitted the last portion without reading it, because this portion was titled "Parishisht". These typists thought that the Parishisht was either added later or was useless. But the Parishisht explicitly says that it was composed by the Rishi Ashwalaayan and these portions were put in Parishisht because they were related to some special topics. The printed version from some reliable publisher of this Vaidik text should be consulted.

Ved have six limbs (Ang) known as Vedaang. Four out of these six limbs are merely for learning the Ved : Grammar (Vyaakaran) , Prosody (Chhand), Etymology (Nirukt) and Vaidik Recitation (Shikshaa), and the remaining two are for practical implementation of Vaidik knowledge. One of them is Jyotish, and the other one is Kalp.

The last one is a collection of four categories of Sootra literature, of which the categories reserved for Grihasth is Grihya Sootra. It describes the Vaidik rituals for Grihasth. Without Grihya Sootra, Vaidik Yagya cannot be properly performed. Many important topics of Jyotish are described in Grihya Sootra, such as Muhoort for events like marriage, sacred thread, etc etc.

Moreover, I have observed that Kaal Sarp Yog actually functions very powerfully and should never be neglected. It destroys all normal Yog and weakens the very strong Yog. The quality of Kaal Sarp Yog and the fields of life it influences, depends upon the houses in which nodes are placed, as well as on placement of other planets and their combinations. Thus, there are lots of varieties of Kaal Sarp  Yog. Nodes in benefic houses such as Trikon or Kendra produce worst forms of Kaal Sarp Yog (see Types of Kaal Sarp Yog)

The text mentioned here (in Ashwalaayan Grihya Sootra) is not a text of Jyotish, although it contains many crucial things of Jyotish. Therefore, details of Kaal Sarp Yog in non-astrological texts should be out of place. Ashwalaayan Grihya Sootra mentions Graha Poojan statements (in prose) in which Sarp Kaal is mentioned under Raahu.

No ancient astrological text mentions Kaal Sarp, which is used by many modern astrogers to deny the existence of this Yog. Varaah Mihir had not heard about Paraashar Horaa Shaastra or Vinshottaree Dashaa system. His commentator of 10th century Bhattotpal had heard of Paraashar Horaa but could not find it. The online version of BPHS was prepared by Pt Sitaram Jha in 1946 who could find it only after ge got MA (Aachaarya) degree. It means that our Sanskrit universities were not teaching BPHS because it was not available in those times.
Does it mean BPHS is a modern or mediaeval text? Many modern books, good and bad, are available on Kaal Sarp Yog.

How is the Kaal Sarp Yog Formed?
If, in a horoscope, all the planets are placed between Dragon's Head (Rahu) and Dragon's Tail (Ketu), it is considered to be a Kaal Sarp yoga. According to Indian astrology, there are many types of Kaal Sarp Yog. A person who takes birth in this yog suffer from various problems like child problems, loss in business, family problems etc. Rahu is known as snake and Ketu is its tail. All planets comes under the execs of Rahu and Ketu because of which Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in horoscope.

This Kaal Sarp Yog can be formed in any person's horoscope like king, rich, president, prime-minister, peon, poor etc. and those who has Kaal Sarp Yog in their horoscope, instead of they have all kind of facilities but always suffer from any tension, fear, insecure. A person who has bitten by snake cannot sit comfortably like this a person who has Kaal Sarp Yog in his horoscope always fear from death. The Kaal Sarp Yog is also categorized into two types- Uttaree Golaardh Kaal Sarp Yog and Dakshinee Goalaardh Kaal Sarp Yog.. It is believed that if all the 7 planets are eaten away by Rahu's mouth then it is Ascending Kaal Sarp Yog. If all planets are situated in back of Rahu then Descending Kaal Sarp Yog is formed.

Why is Kaal Sarp Yog Formed?
Kaal Sarp yog is formed because of very bad Karm is past life and is more dangerous than any other Malefic Yog. Kaal Sarp Yog effects a person till 47 years and some time throughout his life, it dependa upon the position of Kaal Sarp Yog.

Effects of Kaal Sarp Yog :
A person having a Kaal Sarp Yoga in his horoscope faces problems of instability in his life, defamation, problems in progeny, mental disturbances. A person affected by Kaal Sarp Yog will see Pythons and Snakes in his dreams. A person affected by Kaal Sarp Yog has to struggle all through his life. Kaal Sarp Yog negatives the positive effects of the house where it starts and ends. This way the benefit one is supposed top get is completely stopped. The native having Kaal Sarp Yog suffers from mental unrest, hurdles in gain of wealth, barriers in having children and uninterrupted disputes in married life. Usually the native sees bad dreams and there is danger of sudden death. Different fears and worries persist. The native does not get full reward of his talents. Normally the success in work is delayed. Sudden loss of money or prestige is an indication of this yoga. The native without any reason suffers from diseases that are not cured by medicine. For Example, If someone has a Kaal Sarp Yog affecting the First and Seventh house it will cause him prolonged illness and will adversely affect his/her relationship with his/her spouse.

What is Expected in KSY Charts?
Some other astrologers have their own experiences about this Dosh, such as --

1. In the KSY charts, natives suffers due to Dashaa/ Bhukti /Antar-Dashaa not matching with the expected events of life. Like if a chart shows potential for higher study but when the time comes, say after graduation, running Dashaa/ Bhukti /Antar-Dashaa will not support the native and he may have unexpected adverse results like not getting admission or some other bad event. Similarly if the chart may show potential of good marriage, but at proper time of marriage Dashaa/ Bhukti do not support the marriage and therefore unnecessary and unexpected delays occur.  Similarly in other day to day activities, even though chart may have good potential for fruitful events but Antar-Dashaa or transits mismatch to give positive results. Even if chart has potential of good prospects in life but the delays causes lot of frustration.

2. I have noticed that parents of KSY native are in many anxieties due to the native not progressing well.

3. In KSY charts, I have found that KP linkage at star and sub level, first cusp links to 3rd or 8th house in these charts in about 60-70% cases, showing a general anxiety and restlessness to the native.

Important points to remember when analyzing the Kaal Sarp Yog:
(1) All planets must be hemmed between Raahu and Ketu.
(2) Even if one planet is outside the Rahu Ketu axis there is no Kaal Sarp Yog.
(3) The Kaal Sarp Yog is not always bad. It has the power to confer gains too.
(4) Raahu = Moon's North Node. Ketu = Moon's South Node.

In Opposition of this Yog
This is another highly feared combination. You will be surprised to know that the ancient classics of astrology have not even mentioned it! Yet it has become one of the most feared Dosh, because Kaal means death and Sarp means snake. When all planets are to one side of Raahu and Ketu axis Kaal Sarp Dosh is supposed to be caused.

There are supposed to be 12 types of Kaal Sarp Dosh, based on the placement of Raahu from the Lagna to the 12th house. These 12 have been named after 12 fearful sounding snakes: Anant, Kulik, Vasuki, Shankhapal, Padm, Mahapadma, Takshak, Karkat, Shankh Naad, Patak, Vishakata and Shesh Naag. It is not known who cooked up this nonsense, but rest assured that it is none of the Rishi from Paraashar to Varaah Mihir. Obviously some new 20th century "Rishi" of Delhi and UP.

The latest astro-stunt by the "Pandit" is the introduction of "partial Kaal Sarp Dosh". The basic parameters of this Yog are undefined, so anyone may have it. A lot of unscrupulous astrologers are scaring people about this Dosh and extracting money for the so called remedies. The remedy depends and varies according to the financial status of the innocent man.

From practical point of view this is not found to be a hindrance to progress. I have the horoscopes of a lot of people who have this so called Dosh and are doing quite well in life. One of the most notable exceptions is the horoscope of Jawaharlal Nehru, the late prime minister of India. If someone can rise to that level with Kaal Sarp Yog, then its not a bad one really!!

KSY affects those Houses only, which are trapped between Raahu and Ketu and not those ones which are out of it. Further more if Raahu is in 10th House and Ketu is in 4th, and Graha are in above Houses, no effect of KSY as no Graha are there who enters Raahu's mouth.

Basis of Kaal Sarp Yog
By GK Goel

Kaal Sarp Yog, now famous Yog emerges from such back grounds, that Dr BV Raman had written a series of seven Editorials' on this Yog and could not complete it. However, the main thrust was as under :

(1) If all the planets are on one side of Raahu / Ketu axis, two adverse powerful Yog are generated which are named by Savants as under:
(2) If all the planets are placed in a manner commencing from Raahu, it is called 'Kaal Sarp Yog'
(3) If all the planets are placed in a manner commencing from Ketu, it is called 'Kaal Amrit Yog". This has less adverse effects then Kaal Sarp Yog.
(4) If all the 7 planets are placed within the axis of Raahu  and Ketu, and are placed in five houses only (with no house is vacant in between), it also generates Graha Mallika Yog also simultaneously.
(5) If anyone planet is placed with either of the nodes, Raahu or Ketu, and is powerfully disposed, the effects of Kaal Sarp Yog are reduced to some extent.
(6) If out of seven planets, one planet is outside of the Raahu Ketu axis, this might create the natives some problems or their solutions in the life. (This phenomenon was dealt with Dr. Raman in his editorials taking each planet separately with examples - but he could not complete the series on accounts - probably - of other preoccupations)

The problem arises when some astrological practitioners, put too much fear in the heart of a native, and instead to equip him to face adversities attached with this adverse Yog, and indulge in open Loot.

Remedies for Kaal Sarp Yog
(1) The Kaal Sarp Yantra/ Naagpaash Yantra (Worshipping the consecrated Kaal Sarp Yantra reduces the ill effects of the Kaal Sarp Yog).

Case 1

I have heard that Kaal Sarp Yog has something to do when a member of family is cursed or the rituals after death are not taken care off then this Yog becomes feature of family trees and at least one person in every generation will have this Yog. One remedy suggested for this Yog is Naaraayan Naag Bali. Have you heard any such thing? However I know many successful people with KS Yog.

Case 2
Ketu in 4th House and Raahu in 10th House. My health is depleting these days.

There is Kaal Sarp Yog with Raahu + Venus in House which can give problems with lust.
