Sur |
Sur In earlier times there was an Asur named Taaljangh who was very terrible. He had a son named Sur. He was also very mighty and invincible for Devtaa. He used to live in Chandraavatee Nagaree. He defeated all Devtaa and sent them out of Swarg. He coronated another Indra on the throne. He created other Agni, Soorya, Chandra, Varun etc Devta and displaced all original Devta from their places. So all Devtaa went to Vishnu and told their plight. Vishnu got very angry and came to Chandraavatee Nagaree along with Devtaa. As they arrived there, Sur shouted - "You just wait." Hearing this challenge Vishnu started killing Raakshas. He used His Chakra (Divine disc) on Raakshas army. It killed many of them together. After this Bhagavaan Vishnu went to Badarik Aashram. There was a cave named Sinhaavatee. It had only one entrance. He entered in that cave and lay down there. Sur was after Vishnu, so he followed Him and found Him sleeping in that cave. He got very happy to find Him there. He thought that He was the one who was the most troublesome Devtaa so he would kill him today. As Sur thought this, that a maiden appeared from Vishnu's body. She was very beautiful, attractive and equipped with Divine weapons. She asked him for a fight. So the fight started between that maiden and Sur, but Sur got burned and turned into ashes with her one terrible sound only. Vishnu woke up after Sur was killed and said - "He was my biggest enemy, who killed him?" That maiden said - "By your grace only I have killed him." Vishnu said - "You may ask any Var in return to this good work. Even if it is impossible to Devtaa, I will fulfill your wish." That maiden was Ekaadashee in person. She said - "If you are pleased with me then I should be the first among all Teerth (pilgrim places), remover of all hurdles, and granter of all kinds of Siddhi. Who will observe fast on my day with devotion in you, bestow wealth, Dharm, and salvation to them." Vishnu said - "So be it." Since then Ekaadashee day fast has become very auspicious. Hearing this Ekaadashee got very happy. Both Ekaadashee are equally good. If there is a little Ekaadashee in the morning, full Dwaadashee in the middle of the day, and a little Trayodasheee in the end, it is called Tri-sparshaa Ekaadashee. This type of Ekaadashee is very dear to Bhagavaan. If a fast is observed on such Ekaadashee, it gives the fruit of 1,000 Ekaadashee; in the same way if an Ekaadashee ends in Dwaadashee, that also gives the fruit of 1,000 Ekaadashee.
