Rohinee
[From
Bhaagvat Puraan, 5/1, 2, 3;
Bhagvat Puraan, 11/2]
There are two Rohinee -
(1)
Rohinee - Chandramaa's Wife
Rohinee is one of the 27 stars in Indian astrology, commencing from
Ashwinee, Bharanee, Krittikaa, Rohinee etc. They are the daughters of
Daksh Prajaapati and the wives of Chandramaa (Moon). Chandramaa was most
interested in Rohinee and used to neglect his other 26 wives. So all the
26 daughters of Daksh Jee went to their father and complained about
Chandramaa's special love to Rohinee and neglecting behavior towards them.
Based on their complaint, Daksh Prajaapati cursed Chandramaa that he shall
wane away and lose his luster. When his waning was beyond the reason,
those 26 daughters again went to their father. Daksh Jee then amended his
curse that "He will wax for 15 days and wane for another 15 days." and
Chandramaa will have to take holy bath on No-Moon day (Amaavasyaa, or New
Moon day), in one of the holy rivers, named Saraswatee (now extinct), in
Prabhaas Kshetra (area). After that all 26 daughters stopped interfering
with Rohinee and Chandramaa's affairs.
(2)
Rohinee - Vasudev's Wife
Rohinee was the wife of Vasudev - Krishn''s father. Devakee's 7th child
was pulled from Devakee's womb and was transferred to Rohinee's womb. She
gave birth to Balaraam - he was Devakee's 7th son. She was the incarnation
of Kashyap Jee's another wife Kadroo who gave birth to Naag and thus was
known as Naag Maataa. Devakee was Aditi who gave birth to Vaaman Bhagvaan.
In this life Shesh Naag came to honor his mother.
After Kans had imprisoned
Vasudev and Devakee, Rohinee was living in Nand Raay's house secretly, but
when she bore Balaraam in her womb, according to Shaandilya Muni's advice,
she started living in his house openly. Nand Raaya Jee introduced her to
the public that he has brought Vasudev's one wife here in Gokul from
Magthuraa so that at least his one child can survive. In this way nobody
could insult Rohinee.
