Kuru

The whole Mahaabhaarat sings the songs of Kuru, Kuru Vansh, Kuru Kshetra. You must be thinking who is Kuru? What is Kuru? Why is it so important? etc etc.

Kuru was a great king in the lineage of Chandramaa in Dwaapar Yug..
And whoever were born in his lineage were called Kuru Vanshee.
Kuru Kshetra is also on his name. Before this was called Samant Panchak where Parashuraam Jee filled five tanks from Kshatriya's blood.
Later Raajaa Kuru came and ploughed it with his plough and did austerities, then it was called Kuru Kshetra - read about Kuru and Kuru Kshetra here.
Later the same place was used as the battlefield for Kaurav and Paandav. (MBH, G-0-Prolog/2)

According to Bhavishya Puraan, 3/3, p 276-278 Dwaapar Yug starts with the King Samvaran and his wife Tapatee who was Soorya's daughter. He ruled for 10,000 years.
In his 52nd generation, a king was born named Tansh whose son was Dushyant. Dushyant's son was Bharat who ruled for 36,000 years.
From Bharat's 10th generation was born Hastee who inhabited Hastinaapur.
Hastee's son was Ajameedh, Ajameedh's son Rakshpaal, Rakshpaal's son was Sushamyarn, and Sushamyarn's son was Kuru.
Kuru went Swarg with his physical body

From Kuru, in his 12th generation a king was born - Prateep. The Mahaabhaarat begins from this Prateep. Mahaabhaarat is the story of five generations - Prateep -> Shaantanu -> Bheeshm, Chitraangad and Vichitraveerya
- Vichitraveerya -> Dhritraashtra and Paandu; - Dhritraashtra -> 100 sons who were called Kaurav;   Paandu -> 5 sons who were called Paandav.

That is how all children were Kaurav, but only Dhritraashtra's sons were called Kaurav.

Kuru while plowing the field, Vishnu cut his body in thousands of parts and sowed them as seeds in that land. Pleased with this Vishnu asked him to ask for boons. Kuru asked for (1) that that area should be known as Kuru Kshetra only, (2) secondly, whoever dies here should go to Heaven. This was the main reason that only this area was selected for this war, so whoever fought and died here went to Heaven.
