Kayaadhu |
Kayaadhu Kayaadhu was the wife of Hiranyakashyap. Although she was married in a Daitya family, still she was very religious and god-fearing woman. King Hiranyakashyap, the King of the Daitya, wanted to rule the whole universe. After his brother Hiranyaaksh was killed by Varaah Avataar of Vishnu he intended to obtain extraordinary powers to kill Vishnu. So he went to the Mandar Mountains to pray the demigods, where he fasted from food, water and sleep, and stood on his toes, raising his arms in the air for many years. He wanted to attain all the Yaugik perfections and be regarded as a great religious man, even though he hated Lord Vishnu for killing his brother, Hiranyaaksh. The truth of these brothers was that they had been cursed to take three births as demons in the material world. Their lives as Hiranyakashyap and Hiranyaaksh were their first incarnation. In his deep meditation of anger, a fire sprang from Hiranyakashyap's head and a vile smoke filled the universe, choking people, causing climatic changes and natural disasters. Rivers and oceans turned stormy, the earth shook and stars fell from the sky. Planets were thrown from their courses and natural disturbances were seen everywhere. The demigods, unable to bear these sudden changes, approached Brahmaa Jee for help. To appease the demigods, and to bless the poor demon, Brahmaa Jee traveled to the valley of Mandar Hill. At first he couldn't locate Hiranyakashyap because white ants had eaten his flesh. Brahmaa Jee found some bone structure among the bushes. So he sprinkled them with holy water from his Kamandal (water pot). Suddenly the ascetic king had a healthy body again and he asked for the benedictions that he could not be killed in the day or night; by animal or man; inside or outside, on the land or in the sky, or by any weapon. He further requested, "I shall not have any enemy equal to me in strength. I shall be the sole monarch of all the three worlds. I shall remain as glorious as yourself. I shall maintain a spotless reputation, despite my evil disposition." Feeling compassion, Brahma granted all of the king's requests and went back to his heavenly planet. As Hiranyakashyap went for Tapasyaa, Devtaa thought that that was the good opportunity to attack his city, so they went and attacked the city and brought it under their control. Most Daitya ran away. Poor Kayaadhu was also trying to run away from there. At that time she was pregnant with Prahlaad. Devta thought, "If we spared Hiranyakashyap's wife her child will be like him and we will have to face his atrocities, so we should kill her." Thinking thus they caught Kayaadhu and took to Indra. While they were taking her to Indra, Naarad Jee appeared there and asked Devtaa why had they caught an innocent woman and where they were taking her. Devtaa told him he whole story. Naarad Jee said to them - "It is not so as you are thinking. There is a great devotee in her womb. He will be a great lover of Vishnu, so you leave her alone. I take her responsibility." On Naarad's saying this, Devtaa left her there and went away. Naarad Jee then said to Kayaadhu - "O Queen, You come with me and live in my Aashram for the time being, till your husband comes back." Kayaahu went with Naarad Jee to his Aashram. He kept her there comfortably and took great care of her. Everyday he used to tell her knowledge from Ved, and stories from Puraan. This knowledge so much affected that Daitya woman that a great Bhakt boy, named Prahlaad was born in Hiranyakashyap's family.
