Chand and Mund were two brothers. Once they were passing by Vindhya Mountain that they saw Chandikaa Devee. Both got stunned to see her Divine beauty. They went to Mahishaasur and told him about her beauty. Mahishaasur thought he would marry her, so he proceeded with his army. His army had very valiant commanders, such as, Vishaalnetra, Vishang, Vaayakal, Agraayudh, Chikshur, Raktbeej etc. They stayed at the foothills of Vindhyaachal, and they sent Dundubhee to bring Durgaa to them as soon as possible. So Dundubhee went to Durgaa and delivered the message of Mahishaasur to her and asked her to come with him.

They said to her - "Our master Mahishaasur has won all the Devtaa and they have ran away leaving Heaven. Now he is the lord of the Tri-Lok, so it is better if you marry him." Durgaa said - "I know about Mahishaasur very well, but there is one problem. In our clan, whoever marries a girl of this clan he has to pay taxes." Dundubhee got very happy to hear this because he knew that it will not be difficult for Mahishaasur to pay tax to get married to her, so he said - Mahishaasur can give his life also for you." Durgaa laughed and said - "This tax will be in the form of a fight. Whoever will defeat the girl, only he can marry her, so he has to defeat me in the fight."

Dundubheee went back to Mahishaasur and told what Durgaa told him. Mahishaasur sent Chikshur to bring Durgaa to him enslaving her. So Chikshur went there with his large army. Seeing him comig to Durgaa, Brahmaa Jee instructed her to wear a Kavach (armor), but Durgaa refused to wear any kind of armor saying that no Asur can stand me in fight.

Then all the Deities chanted Vishnu Panjar Stotra for her safety, protected by that Stotra, she also proceeded for the fight and killed many demons in that army. Seeing this Mahishaaasur himself came to fight with her.
