Veerbhadra is depicted as a superman who was created by the anger of Shiv Jee.

This story begins when once Shiv Jee went to Maharshi Agastya Jee along with with Satee Jee to listen to Raam Kathaa and was coming back from there. He had known that his Isht Dev Raam had incarnated on Prithvi so he was very anxious to have His Darshan. He was looking here and there. Luckily, at the same time Raam was sent to forest by King Dasharath so He was in the forest along with His brother Lakshman and wife Seetaa. Seetaa was abducted by Raavan and He and Lakshman were wandering around in search of Seetaa Jee. Shiv Jee happened to see them. He recognized them and greeted Him in his heart. Satee saw this and wondered who is worshipped by everybody, he is worshipping whom? So she asked him as whom he greeted. He showed her the two princes that one of them was his Isht Dev whose Kathaa they were listening at Agastya'a Aashram, he had greeted Him only. Satee Jee could not believe it, so Shiv Jee asked her to test Him herself. Satee Jee went there assuming the form of Seetaa but Raam recognized her as Satee and asked her why she was wandering in that dense forest alone. Hearing this she got scared and came back to Shiv Jee. On asking how she tested Raam, she lied which Shiv Jee had known by his Yog power. From that moment Shiv Jee took a vow that now on it was not possible to have relationship with Satee. A Divine voice praised Shiv's action. Satee Jee also heard it and got worried about it. After that a lot of time passed.

At the same time Daksh Jee was appointed Prajaapati by Brahmaa Jee so he organized a grand Yagya and invited all Devtaa, Apsaraa, Siddh, Chaaran etc. Satee Jee saw all this and came to know that her father was doing the Yagya. She thought that by going there she will forget her sorrow, but her father had not invited her. She went to Shiv Jee and expressed her desire to go there. Shiv Jee advised her not to go there uninvited but Satee did not agree with it, so Shiv Jee sent her there along with his Gan. Satee went there and did not find his Yagya sahre there. Filled with rage she immolated herself. Seeing this the Gan who came with her destroyed the Yagya.

Shiv Jee came to know about Satee's immolation and got very angry. With his anger he produced a superhuman by throwing a flock of his hair on the ground. He was very fierce in his look. he was dark in his complexion. he had 1,000 arms, three burning eyes and was wearing a garland of skulls. He immediately asked - "What can I do for you?" Shiv Jee asked him to go to Daksh's Yagya and destroy it and if somebody interferes in his task, he should kill him. Veerbhadra went there and started destroying Daksh's Yagya. In this process he broke Pooshaa's teeth, other Devta also came to fight with him but could not face him. He cut the head of Daksh, trampled on Indra, broke the staff of Yam Raaj, After doing this he came back to Kailaash. As he came there he met Vishnu. According to Skand Puraan, he swallowed Vishnu's Chakra.

After the destruction of Daksh's Yagya, Devtaa went to Brahmaa Jee and prayed him to make peace with Shiv. So Brahmaa jee went to Shiv and prayed him to pardon Daksh and to mend broken limbs of Devtaa and Rishi. Shiv got pleased and he restored Daksh's body by joining a goat's head on his body. Then he invited Shiv to the Yagya and completed the Yagya. Daksh made peace with him, the Yagya was completed and all Devtaa returned to their abodes.

His consort is Bhadra Kaalee.
