Saamb

Saamb was the son of Krishn and Jaambvatee.

Saamb is Cursed by His father Krishn
Saamb was inordinately proud of his beauty. So proud that he once made the mistake of ridiculing a celebrated sage, Naarad Jee, who was not renowned for his looks. Naarad Jee was not amused. Always mischievous, he decided to have his revenge on the arrogant boy. He managed to lure the unsuspecting Saamb to the pool where his stepmothers, the luscious consorts of Krishn, were taking bath in joyful abandon.

When Krishn heard that His son had become a peeping tom, He got furious and cursed him with leprosy. Realizing later that the innocent boy had been tricked by Naarad's cunningness, Krishn was mortified, but He could not revoke His course; all He could do was to advise his son to worship the Sun god - Soorya Bhagavaan, healer of all diseases, and hope for a cure. After twelve years of penance and worship, Saamb was at last instructed by Soorya to go and bathe in the sea at Konaark. He did so and got cured of his awful affliction. Saamb was so delighted that he decided then and there to erect a Soorya Temple on the spot.

Saamb is Cursed Again
This story comes in Bhaagvat Puraan, 11/1 and Vishnu Puraan, 5/14. Once many Rishi came to Dwaarakaa with the desire to see Krishn. They stayed outside the city. Once Yadu princes happened to pass from that place, and seeing those Rishi they thought to do some mockery with them. One of them dressed Saamb as a pregnant woman and took him to those Rishi and asked them - "You know everything of past and future. This woman is pregnant, tell her what she will deliver, a boy or a girl?" Rishi looked at him for a few seconds and replied - "She would deliver a pestle which will destroy the whole Yadu Kul."

Hearing this all princes got frightened. They immediately opened Saamb's stomach, and they indeed found a pestle there. They repented for their action, but nothing could be done now. They came to Raajaa Ugrasen. Ugrasen was sitting in the court at that time. They told him everything what had happened. When he listened to them, he also got frightened. Ugrasen ordered to crush it to make its powder and throw it into the sea." So people ground it into powder and threw into the sea. But even after grinding it well, a little piece of that rod still remained un-ground. That piece was also thrown into the sea. People forgot this incident after a while.

That powder came back to the seashore, and a fish swallowed that remaining iron piece. The powder had grown into Erak grass; and a fisherman caught that fish. When that fisherman cut open the stomach of that fish, he found that iron piece. He sold it to a hunter named Jaraa. Jaraa made an arrowhead out of it.

Once Yadu princes were enjoying themselves with good food and drink that a quarrel broke among them n a trivial matter - "My food is good and yours is not." They started fighting with hands, then with bow and arrows. When their arrows got finished they started uprooting that grass grown nearby. his grass was the same grass which grew from the pestle's remaining piece. As it came in their hands it turned into arrows and started killing people. Krishn was also there. He also started hitting people with that grass. Thus all people died by that grass, except Krishn. Krishn came back.

Krishn thought that now His time has come to go back o His own Lok, so He came and sat in Yog position keeping His foot on His thigh. Jaraa saw some pink thing from a distance, he thought that it was an animal, so he aimed that arrow (with the pestle head) at it an released it. The pink thing which he thought was an animal, was in fact the soul of Krishn's foot. It hit it and Krishn died of it. When Jaraa came to take his hunt, he found that there was no animal and there was a Chatur-bhuj man - Krishn. He felt very sorry and asked for His forgiveness repeatedly. Krishn consoled him, that it was destined like that, so he need not to worry about it. Krishn sent him to His Lok riding in a Divine Vimaan.

Thus Rishi's curse came true and that pestle destroyed the whole Yadu Kul, including Krishn.
