Sarg 71-Janak Describes His Family

Raajaa Janak said politely - "It is essential to introduce my family too at the time of performing Kanyaa Daan (see also Daan) so please listen to now about my family. Raajarshi Swarnsomaa's son was Hriswaromaa. He had two sons, one is me and another is my younger brother Kushdhwaj. My father handed over the kingdom to me and went to forest. After the death of my father, I brought up my younger brother with due respect like a Devtaa. {read the lineage of Janak in Bhaagvat Puraan, 9/7]

After some time King Sudhanvaa attacked Mithilaa and said - "If you give me Shiv's bow and your daughter Seetaa then I am your friend, otherwise I will get them both after defeating you in the battle." I killed him in the battle and gave his kingdom to my brother. I happily give my daughters, Seetaa and Urmilaa, to Raam and Lakshman. I vow three times that I will give my daughters to you surely, therefore you complete the formalities of pre-marriage. Marriage will be performed after three days in the auspicious Muhoort of Phaalgunee Nakshatra (stars), and I will perform the Kanyaa Daan at the same time.

Sarg 72-Janak and Dasharath Prepare for Marriage

Hearing Janak, Vishwaamitra and Vashishth Jee said - "You both have good religious families. There is no other Vansh (family) like Ikshwaaku and Videh families. But we want to say one more thing, if you accept it, it will be very good. You give your younger brother Kushdhwaj's two daughters for Bharat and Shatrughn. Thus both families will be tied in a strong tie. Dashrath's both sons are brave and mighty."

Raajaa Janak agreed upon this and promised to do so. Then Vashishth Jee said - "All four brothers will be married on the same day and it will be tomorrow in Uttaraa Phaalgunee Nakshatra (constellation). Learned people praise this Nakshtra, therefore all the four princes should be married in this Nakshatra only."

Raajaa Janak got very happy to hear about this Muhoort and said - "You have obliged me greatly by telling about this Muhoort. Hey Gurudev, kindly consider me also as your disciple as you do Dasharath Jee." Then Dasharath Jee etc asked Raajaa Janak's permission to go to perform Naandee etc Shraaddh at his place and donated 100,000 cows for each prince. All cows horns were gold covered and there was a pot of Kaansaa ( a kind of mixed metal) to milk the cow with each cow.

Sarg 73-Dasharath Marries His Four Sons

While Dasharath Jee was doing Go Daan (donating cows) (see also Daan) etc, Bharat's Maamaa (maternal uncle) Yudhaajit came to see him. He greeted Dasharath Jee and told that Bharat's Naanaa (maternal grandfather) wanted to see Bharat. He had sent him to bring Bharat Jee. So first he went to Ayodhyaa and knew there that all had left for Janak Puree for marriage, so he came there. Dasharath welcomed Yudhaajit.

Next day the four princes adorned in beautiful clothes and precious jewelry came with Guru Vashishth. Vashishth Jee said to Raajaa Janak to perform marriage ceremony, because the Muhoort was approaching fast. Raajaa Janak said - "Gurudev, My all daughters are sitting at Vivaah Vedee (marriage altar) in marriage attire, and I myself am waiting for you. You may start the ceremony."

Hearing this Vashishth Jee and Shataanand Jee started building Vivaah Mandap (marriage canopy) and Vishwaamitra Jee started doing Havan. First Seetaa was called to Mandap for Raam, then Urmilaa, Maandavee and Shrutkeerti were called for Lakshman, Bharat and Shatrughn respectively. All the four princes circumambulated Agni Vedee with their wives and thus the marriage ceremony was performed and got over.
