Raamaayan's Characters
Mostly all names are given here with their brief description and the reference of their first appearance in Maanas.

Aditi
Aditi was the daughter of Daksh Prajaapati and was married to Kashyap Jee. Once she did an intense Tap along with her husband Kashyap Jee to get Bhagavaan as their son, so they incarnated as Dasharath and Kaushalyaa in Ayodhyaa Puree and had Raam as their son.

Agastya Muni
Agastya Muni was a Rishi who Raam met after He had met Suteekshan and Sharbhang Muni.

Ahalyaa
Ahalyaa was the most beautiful creation of Bramaa Jee who gave her to Gautam Rishi. Later Brahmaa Jee married her to him. Once Indra cheated her Paativrat, so Gautam Rishi cursed her to be a stone and later released from this curse when Raam would pass that way and touch the stone with His foot. So Raam did.

Ahiraavan
Ahiraavan was Raavan's brother. Raavan to him also for help. So he went in Raam's camp in the night asuming Vibheeshan's guise and brought them to Paataal where he planned to offer their sacrifice to Devee. But Hanumaan knew Raam Lakshman's absence in the camp and came to save them. Here he met his son Makaradhwaj also.

A great warrior in Raavan's army.

Akshaya Kumaar
Raavan's one of the seven sons - Indrajeet, Prahast, Naraantak, Devaantak, Akshaya Kumaar, Atikaaya, Trishiraa.

Angad
Angad was the son of Baali and Taaraa. He got the kingdom of Kishkindhss after Raam had killed Baali.

Arimardan
Arimardan was the younger son of Satyaketu of Kaikya DeBecause of Braahman's Shaap he was born as Kumbhkarn.

Atikaaya
Raavan's one of the seven sons - Indrajeet, Prahast, Naraantak, Devaantak, Akshaya Kumaar, Atikaaya, Trishiraa. He was the son of Dhanyamaalinee who was the second wife of Raavan. He was the younger brother of Indrajeet. He had learned all the secrets of archery and obtained Divine weapons from Shiv when he caught the Trishool of Shiv in anger at Kailaash Parvat. Due to his extraordinary skills he was killed by Lakshman through the Brahm Astra. This secret was revealed to Lakshman through Vaayu Dev, due to the persuasion of Indra, since the invincible armor of Brahmaa was granted to Atikaaya, so to kill him Brahm Astra was necessary.

Raam met him after He left Valmeeki's place.

Baali
Baali and Sugreev were the two sons of Rikshraaj from Indra and Soorya respectively. Baali's wife was Taaraa and they had a son named Angad. Sugreev's wife was Roomaa Devee.

Baanaasur
Baanaasur was the son of Raajaa Bali, grandson of Virochan and the great grandson of Prahlaad (Prahlaad -> Virochan -> Bali -> Banaasur). By mentioning his name here by Tulasee Das Jee, it seems that he also was a candidate for Seetaa and could not move the bow.

Bharadwaaj Muni
Raam met him when He was on His way to exile. Bharat also stayed in his Aashram for a night when he was going to bring Raam back to Ayodhyaa. Muni felicitated Bharat and his army so well with the power of his Tap that Bharat got very surprised to see it.

Bharat
Bharat was the second among the four sons of Dasharath and loved Raam very much His wife's name was Maandavee. When Raam was in exile, he also did not stay in Ayodhya and lived a harder life than Raam was living in forest in repentence. He me Hanumaan also whoile Hanumaan was taking Sanjeevanee herb back to Raam.

Dasharath
Dasharath was the King of Ayodhyaa. He had three chief queens - Kaushalyaa, Sumitraa and Kaikeyee. He had four sons from them - Raam from Kaushalyaa, Lakshman and Shatrughn from Sumitraa and Bharat from Kaikeyee. When Kaikeyee exiled Raam, he died.

Devaantak
Raavan's one of the seven sons - Indrajeet, Prahast, Naraantak, Devaantak, Akshaya Kumaar, Atikaaya, Trishiraa.

Devahooti
Devahooti was the daughter of Manu and was married to Kardam Rishi.

Dharmruchi
Dharmruchi was the Chief Minister of Prataapbhaanu, the King of Kaikaya Desh. He also bagged the Shaap of Rishi and had to be born as an Asur - Vibheeshan.

Dhoomketu
A great warrior in Raavan's army.

Dhruv
Son of Uttaanpaad. He did Tapasyaa at a very young age - 5 years and got the highest Lok from Bhagavaan.

Dooshan
Khar and Dooshan were Raavan's cousins. They were taking care of Raavan's knigdom from the mainland Bhaarat. When Lakshman had cut Shoorpankhaa's ears and nose, they came to fight with Raam but were killed by Him.

Durmukh
A great warrior in Raavan's army.

Dwivid
Dwivid was a Vaanar in Raam's army. He lived long - even upto the times of Shre Krishn. He was killed by Balaraam.

Ektanu
Ektanu was the fake name of the king whom Prataapbhaanu defeated. After the defeat he did not go to his home but lived in a forest. When Prataapbhaanu was out for hunting and forgot his way he came to him and he sheltered him. He was the one who became the cause of Braahman's Shaap to him.

Gaadhi
Gaadhi was a king whose son was Vishwaamitra.

Gad
Gad was a mighty Vaanar in Raam's army.

Garud
Garud was the son of Kashyap and Vinataa. Later he became the ride of Vishnu.

Gautam Rishi
Gautam Rishi's wife's name was Ahalyaa. She was very beautiful and Pativrataa. Once Indra decived her in disguise of Gautam Rishi. At this Gautam Rishi cursed her to be a stone. On aslking when she would be free from this cure, he said "when Raam will come and touch you with His foot, you will get the same beauty and will come to my Lok." So Raam touched that rock while going to Janak Puree for Dhanush Yagya where all the four brothers were married.

Guh Nishaad
Guh was a Nishaad, a Kevat or a boat sailor. He was a friend of Dasharath. He helped Raam to cross Gangaa River when He was going to forest.

Jaambvaan
Jaambaan was a bear in Raam's army. He also lived long - even up to the Shree Krishn times. He fought with Krishn for 28 days, then recognized Him as Raam and married his daughter Jaambvatee to Him.

Janak Jee
Janak Jee was the father of Seetaa Jee. He was a Raajarshi. He had two daughters - Seetaa and Urmilaa. He married them to Raam and Lakshman respectively.

Jataayu
Sampaati and Jataayu were two brothers, sons of Arun (the son of Kashyap and Vinataa). Jataayu helped Raam to fight with Raavan when he was kidnapping Seetaa, though he did not succeed and lost his life, but at least he told Raam that Raavan had taken His Seetaa.

Kaagbhushundi Jee
Kaagbhushundi Jee is a crow who tells Raam Kathaa to all birds. He tells this Kathaa in this Maanas to Garud Jee when he got very proud that he saved Raam from Naag Paash.

Kaalketu
Kaalketu was an Asur who was the fast friend of Ektanu. He had 10 brothers and 100 sons who were also like him. Once the King had defeated him too, so he joined Ektanu. He was the one who misguided the King Prataapbhaanu and he was the one who took him to his palace in sleep.

Kaalnemi
Kaalnemi was a Raakshas who went to kill Hanumaan at the order of Raavan, when he was going to bring Sanjeevanee herb for Lakshman from Himaalaya; although later Hanumaan killed him.

Kabandh
Kabandh was a Gandharv who became Kabandh (trunk without head) because of Agastya Muni's Shaap. He wanted to kill Raam but Raam killed him. As he died he told Raam to extend friendship with Sugreev to find Seetaa. He did not have his head.

Kaikeyee
Kaikeyee was the youngest of the three queens of the King Dasharath. She was good at warfare. Once she saved life of Dasharath in a battle. Pleased with her Dasharath gave her two Var which she postponed and asked them when Raam was to be declared Crown Prince - throne to her son Bharat, and 14 years of exile to Raam.

Kapil Muni
Kapil Muni was the Avataar of Shree Hari and appeared as the son of Kardam Rishi and his wife Devahooti.

Kardam Rishi
Kardam Rishi was married to Manu's daughter Devahooti. They had a son named Kapil Jee who was the Avataar of Shree Hari.

Kashyap
Kashyap Jee was the son of Mareechi and Kalaa. He helped a lot to create this world. Once he did an intense Tap to get Bhagavaan as his son so he incarnated as Dasharath with his wife Aditi as Kaushalyaa in Ayodhyaa and had Raam as their son.

Kaushalyaa
Kaushalyaa was the eldest of the three queens of the King Dasharath. Her son was Raam who was sent in exile by Kaikeyee for 14 years.

Kesaree
Kesaree was the father of Hanumaan and was in Raam's army.

Khar
Khar and Dooshan were Raavan's cousins. They were taking care of Raavan's knigdom from the mainland Bhaarat. When Lakshman had cut Shoorpankhaa's ears and nose, they came to fight with Raam but were killed by Him.

Kuber
Kuber was the son of Muni Vishravaa and his first wife Idvidaa. Thus he was half brother of Raavan, Kumbhkarn and Vibheeshan. At first he was living in Lankaa Nagaree, but when Raavan had got Var he took over Lankaa from Kuber along with his Pushpak Vimaan. Kuber went to Kailaash Parvat.

Kumbhaj Rishi
Kumbhaj is the other name of Agastya Jee, since he was born from a Kumbh (pitcher).

Kumbhkarn
Kumbhkarn was the son of Muni Vishravaa and Daity Kanyaa Kaikasee (Keshinee). He had two brothers - Raavan and Vibheeshan and a sister named Shoorpankhaa. He got the Var of indefinite sleep by doing severe Tap. He was killed by Raam.

Lakshman
Lakshman was the third among the four sons of Dasharath and loved Raam very much His wife's name was Urmilaa.

Lankinee
Lankinee was the guard of Raavan's Lankaa. She was very vigilant. Even a mosquito could not enter Lankaa without her knowledge. When Hanumaan was going inside Lankaa she saw him and questioned him. She was very brave but Brahmaa Jee had warned her that when you get hurt by a Vaanar, you consider Raakshas' end is near. So when Hanumaan hit her, and she got hurt she got very happy to see the messenger of Raam and allowed him to enter Lankaa.

Maandavee
Maandavee was the cousin sister of Seetaa and was married to Bharat.

Maareech
Maareech was the maternal uncle (Maamaa) of Raavan. He was the son of Taadakaa and brother of Subaahu. Once Raam threw him hundred Yojan far with His arrow. Second time he came in front of him as a golden deer and then Raam killed him.

Maatali
Maatali is Indra's Saarathee (chariot driver). Indra sent him to help Raam while Raam got ready to fight with Raavan.

Makaradhwaj
Makaradhwaj was Hanumaan's son and was employed by Ahiraavan. When Hanumaan came to save Raam and Lakshman there, he had a fight with him and had introduction too.

Mantharaa
Mantharaa was the maid of Kaikeyee. She came with her from her father's house and caused to send Raam to forest for 14 years.

Manu
Manu was born from Brahmaa's sneeze. He was married to Shataroopaa and had then two sons from her - Uttaanpaad and Priyavrat; and had three daughters - Devahooti, marred to Kardam Ji; Prasooti, married to Daksh Jee; and Aakooti married to Ruchi Prajaapati.

Maya Daanav
Maya was the architect of Asur. Along with other things he built Lankaa in gold on Trikoot mountain for Kuber, another son of Vishravaa, half brother of Raavan. He had two sons - Maayaavee and

Nal
Nal and Neel were two brothers who were in Raam's army. They had the Var that whichever stone they will touch, it will float on water. By this Var they helped Raam to build the bridge over the sea.

Naraantak
Raavan's one of the seven sons - Indrajeet, Prahast, Naraantak, Devaantak, Akshaya Kumaar, Atikaaya, Trishiraa. He was the in charge of 720 million (72 Crores) soldiers. Hanumaan killed all of them.

Neel
Nal and Neel were two brothers who were in Raam's army. They had the Var that whichever stone they will touch, it will float on water. By this Var they helped Raam to build the bridge over the sea.

Nishath was a mighty Vaanar in Raam's army.

Prahast
Raavan's one of the seven sons - Indrajeet, Prahast, Naraantak, Devaantak, Akshaya Kumaar, Atikaaya, Trishiraa. He led Raavan's army when he fought with Yam and Kuber. It was because of him he could establish his sovereignty over the three worlds. Prahast was slain by Raam in Raam-Raavan war.

Prataapbhaanu was the son of Satyaketu of Kaikaya Desh. He got a Shaap from Rishi and had to be born as an Asur (Raavan).

Raam
Raam is the eldest son of the four sons of King Dasharath of Ayodhyaa. He was married to Seetaa. By the order of His father and stepmother Kaikeyee, he went to forest for 14 years. There He killed many Raakshas including Raavan and Kumbhkarn.

Raavan
Raavan was the son of Muni Vishravaa and Daitya Kanyaa Kaikasee (Keshinee). He had two brothers - Kumbhkarn and Vibheeshan and a sister named Shoorpankhaa. He got the Var of not being killed by anybody - Devtaa, Gandharv, Yaksh, Kinnar, He had no danger from human beings and monkeys. That is why he was killed by a human being - Raam. HIs wife's name was Mandodaree and he had two brave sons - Meghnaad and Akshaya Kumaar.

Rishyashring Rishi
Rishyashring Rishi was the son of Vibhaandak Muni and the grandson of Kashyap Jee. He helped Dasharath to do Putreshti Yagya to get sons for him. Dasharath's friend's daughter Shaantaa was married to him.

Roomaa Devee
Roomaa was the wife of Sugreev. When Baali, his brother, exiled Sugreev from Kishkindhaa, he took all his possessions, even his wife.

Saaran
Shuk and Saaran were the spies of Raavan sent to find out about Raam's army and how Vibheeshan was received. Both were so moved to see Raam's kindness to His enemy that they forgot their disguise and came into their original form. Vaanar recognized them, caught them, but Lakshman freed them hearing them vowing on Raam.

Sampaati
Sampaati and Jataayu were two brothers, sons of Arun (the son of Kashyap and Vinataa). Sampaati helped Vaanar to tell them whereabouts of Seetaa and reminded his powers to Hanumaan by which he could go across the sea.

Satyaketu
Satyaketu was a king of Kaikaya Desh who had two sons Prataapbhaanu and Arimardan. Prataapbhaanu got a Shaap from Rishi and was born as Raavan.

Seetaa
Seetaa was the incarnation of Lakshmee, daughter of the King Janak and was married to Raam. She had two sons, Lav and Kush who were born in Vaalmeeki's Aashram.

Shabaree
Shabaree used to serve Muni community in Matang Muni's Aashram. When they left the place, she also wanted to go with them nut they stopped her saying that she should wait there because Raam will pass from that path. So she was waiting for Raam to come and have His Darshan. She daily collected only sweet berries from the forest to offer to Raam lest He returns without having anything from her hut. She tasted them before she had to offer them to Him, to make sure they are sweet, lest she offers them any sour tasted berry.

Sharbhang Muni
Sharbhang was a Rishi. Raam came to him after He had left Atri Muni's Aashram and killd Viraadh Raakshas.

Shataanand
Shataanand was the Kul Purohit of the King Janak. He was the son of Maharshi Gautam and Ahalyaa.

Shataroopaa
Shataroopaa was the daughter of Brahmaa Jee and was married to Manu.

Shath
Shath was a mighty Vaanar in Raam's army.

Shatrughn
Shatrughn was the fourth and the youngest son of Dasharath and loved Bharat very much. His wife's  name was Shrutkeerti.

Sheelnidhi
Sheelnidhi was the king of the city which was created by Shree Hari to destroy Naarad Jee's pride.

Shoorpanakhaa
Shoorpanakhaa was the daughter of Muni Vishravaa and Kaikasee. She was sister of Raavan, Kumbhkarn and Vibheeshan. She got attracted to Raam while wandering around Panchvatee. When Lakshman cut her nose and ears, she complained about this to Khar, Dooshan, and Trishiraa; and when Raam had killed them then to Raavan too.

Shravan Kumaar

Shringee Rishi
Tulasee Daas Jee gives this name in his Maans, but actually his name was Rishyshring Rishi.

Shrutkeerti
Shrutkeerti was the cousin sister of Seetaa and was married to Shatrughn, Raam's brother.

Shuk
Shuk and Saaran were the spies of Raavan sent to find out about Raam's army and how Vibheeshan was received. Both were so moved to see Raam's kindness to His enemy that they forgot their disguise and came into their original form. Vaanar recognized them, caught them, but Lakshman freed them hearing them vowing on Raam. He was born as Raakshas because of Agastya Muni's Shaap. As he asked Raavan to give Seetaa to Raam Raavan hit him with his foot, so he also left Raavan and went to Raam and went back to his Aashram.

Sinhikaa
Sinhikaa was a Raashasee who used to live in the sea and used to catch hold of the moving creatures in sky by looking at their shadow in the sea water. She caught hold Hanumaan also by this way. Hanumaan then killed her and moved forward.

Subaahu
Subaahu was the son of Taadakaa and younger brother of Maareech. Raam killed him when he was disturbing Vishwaamitra's Yagya.

Sugreev
Baali and Sugreev were the two sons of Rikshraaj from Indra and Soorya respectively. Baali's wife was Taaraa and they had a son named Angad. Sugreev's wife was Roomaa Devee. Baali had exiled Sugreev so he lived on Rishyamook mountain with his four Ministers including Hanumaan because Baali could not come there. He helped Raam a lot in searching Seetaa an getting Seetaa back from Raavan.

Sumantra
Sumantra was the main minister of Dasharath.

Sumitraa
Sumitraa was the second of the three wives of Dasharath. She had tw sons - Lakshman and Shatrughn.

Sunayanaa
Sunayanaa was the wife the King Janak and the mother of Seetaa.

Suprabhaa was the in charge of the cave where Hanumaan entered to drink water when he felt thirsty. Vaalmeeki Raamaayan gives her name as Swayamprabhaa.

Surasaa
Surasaa was one of the wives of Kashyap Jee. Devtaa sent her to test Hanumaan Jee's might and intelligence when he was flying to Lankaa in search of Seetaa Jee.

Sushen
Sushen was a Vaidya (traditional doctor) who lived in Lankaa and was approached to treat Lakshman on the recommendation of Vibheeshan when Meghnaad hit him with his Veerghaatinee Shakti and he got unconscious. Hanumaan brought him in sleeping state along with his house, and left him there in the early morning after Lakshman was all right.

Suteekshn
Suteekshn Muni was the disciple of Muni Agastya Jee. When Raam came to his Aashram, after visiting Sharbhang Muni Jee, he was very happy to see Him.

Swayamprabhaa
She was the in charge of the cave where Hanumaan and other Vaanar went to drink water when felt thirsty. Agni Puraan gives her name as Suprabhaa.

Taadakaa
Taadakaa was a Raakshasee who was killed by Raam when she was disturbing Vishwaamitra's Yagya. She had two sons - Maareech and Subaahu. Subaahu was killed at the same time but Raam spared Maareech just by throwing him hundred Yojan far.

Taar
Taar was the brother-in-law of Bali - Taaraa's brother.

Taaraa
Taaraa was the wife of Baali. She was very beautiful and intelligent. She counseled Baali all the time, she took care of her son Angad, and then managed Lakshman's wrath on Sugreev when he delayed the search for Seetaa.

Taarakaasur
Taarakaasur was a Raakshas who got the Var from Brahmaa Jee that he should be killed by a 7-day old child, thinking that what a 7-day child can do to him. Then on all Devtaa's request Shiv produced a son named Kaartikeya who killed him  when he was only 7-days old.

Trijataa
Trijataa was a Raakshasee who was serving Seetaa in Raavan's Ashok Vaatikaa. She loved Seetaa very much and consoled Her at time to time.

Trishiraa
Raavan's one of the seven sons - Indrajeet, Prahast, Naraantak, Devaantak, Akshaya Kumaar, Atikaaya, Trishiraa. Trishiraa was another Daitya who was also living with Khar and Dooshan. After Khar and Dooshan were killed he came to fight with Raam but he was also killed by Him. He had three heads that is why his name was Tri-Shiraa.

Uttaanpaad
Son of Manu. He had the son name Dhruv who was given the highest Lok.

Vaalmeeki Jee
Vaalmeeki Jee was a Rishi. He wrote Raamaayan. He is known as the first poet and his work Raamaayan is the first long poetry. He kept Seetaa in his Aashram when Raam exiled Her. Raam's sons Lav and Kush were born in his Ashram only. Raam met him when he was in exile.

Vashishth Jee

Vibheeshan
Vibheeshan was the youngest of the three sons of Muni Vishravaa and Daitya Kanyaa Kaikasee (Keshinee). He had two brothers - Raavan and Kumbhkarn and a sister named Shoorpanakhaa. He got the Var of being devotee of Bhagavaan. He also tried to advice Raavan to return Seetaa to Raam but when he did not listene to him and kicked him out of his kingdom, he defected him and went to Raam.

Vishwaamitra Jee
Vishwaamitra Jee was a Kshatriya but later became a Rishi by doing intense Tapasyaa. In Maanas he took Raam and Lakshman to take care of his Yagya from Raakshas. When he had completed his Yagya he took them to Janak Putree and married them to Seetaa and Urmilaa.

Vishwamohinee was the name of the daughter of Sheelnidhi who was the king of the Maayaa city Vishnu built to correct Naarad Jee.
