Index-Asht Vinaayak See also Asht Vinaayak Temples Ganesh's eight Avataar (incarnations) are well known. The stories of these incarnations of Ganesh Jee have been published by Gita Press, Gorakhpur, UP also in a small book. 1. Vakratund ("twisting trunk") - First in the series, represents the absolute as the aggregate of all bodies, an embodiment of the form of Braahman. The purpose of this incarnation is to overcome the demon Matsaraasur (envy, jealousy). His mount (Vaahan) is a lion. 2. Ekadant ("single tusk") - Represents the aggregate of all individual souls, an embodiment of the essential nature of Brahm. the purpose of this incarnation is to overcome the demon Madaasur (arrogance, conceit). His mount is a mouse. 3. Mahodar ("big belly") - Is a synthesis of both Vakratund and Ekadant. It is the absolute as it enters into the creative process. It is an embodiment of the wisdom of Brahm. The purpose of this incarnation is to overcome the demon Mohaasur (delusion, confusion). His mount is a mouse. 4. Gajavaktra (or Gajaanan) (elephant faced) - Is a counterpart to Mahodar Avataar. The purpose of this incarnation is to overcome the demon Lobhaasur (greed). His mount is a mouse. 5. Lambodar ("pendulous belly") - Is the first of four incarnations that correspond to the stage where the Pauraanik gods are created. Lambodar corresponds to 'Shakti, the pure power of Brahm'. The purpose of this incarnation is to overcome the demon Krodhaasur (anger). His mount is a mouse. 6. Vikat (Vikat) "unusual form", "misshapen") - Corresponds to Soorya. He is an embodiment of the illuminating nature of Brahm. The purpose of this incarnation is to overcome the demon Kaamaasur (lust). His mount is a peacock. 7. Vighnaraaj (Vighnaraaj) "king of obstacles") - Corresponds to Vishnu. He is an embodiment of the preserving nature of Brahm. The purpose of this incarnation is to overcome the demon Mamaasur (possessiveness). His mount is the celestial serpent 'Shesh Naag'. 8. Dhoomravarn (Dhoomravarn) \(grey color) - Corresponds to Shiv. He is an embodiment of the destructive nature of Brahm. The purpose of this incarnation is to overcome the demon Abhimaanaasur (pride, attachment). His mount is a horse.
