Back to Notes

Navadhaa Bhakti

Bhakti is always between God and man, or man to God and is always selfless, but sometimes it may occur between humans also. And that also implies the same meaning that as a person is a Bhakt to Bhagavaan, in the same way he is Bhakt to that person also.  There are nine types of Bhakti described in Maanas, 3/8 when Raam met Shabaree in her Aashram:

(1) Satsang - Company of good saintly people
(2) Hearing Bhagvaan's Kathaa (stories)
(3) Guru Sevaa - Serving Guru's feet without any pride
(4) Sing Bhagavaan's qualities without cheating
(5) Doing Jaap of my Mantra and have strong faith in me
(6) Control on Indriyaan, good character, Vairaagya from Karm and following saints' behavior
(7). To see me in the whole world and regarding saints more than me
(8) To be contented in whatever is available, and not seeing other's faults even in dream
(9) Plainness and behaving well with everybody without cheating, having trust in me and feeling neither happiness nor sadness in any situation

In Bhaagvat Puraan, 7/3 Prahlaad tells 9 types of Bhakti to his father Hiranykashyap --

Prahlaad said - "Bhakti (devotion) is of nine types - (1) hearing His names and His stories, (2) Keertan (singing His name), (3) remembering His Swaroop (Dhyaan or Meditation), (4) serving His feet, (5) worshipping Him, (6) praying Him, (7) slavery to Him, (8) friendship with Him, and (9) submission to Him. Who follows this type of Bhakti, he is the greatest."

In Bhaagvat Puraan, it is described as nine types of feelings towards Bhagavaan:

(1) Daasya Bhaav - Feelings of a slave to his master, this is called Daasya Bhaav Bhakti - as Hanumaan and Lakshman had for Raam [Sugreev's Sevaa Bhaav was the dedication in just serving Raam, while Hanumaan's Sevaa Bhaav was dedication in reverence]
(2) Pitra Bhaav - Feelings as of son to father - as Prahlaad had for Naaraayan
(3) Baalya Bhaav - Feelings as a parent to his or her child - as Yashodaa had for her son Krishn
(4) Saakhya Bhaav - Feelings of a friend to his friend - as Arjun had for Shree Krishn; and Sudaamaa had for Shree Krishn
(5) Caretaking Bhaav - Feelings of a cow to cowherd - as Gopee of Vrindaa Van had for Shree Krishn
(6) Conjugal Bhaav - Feelings of a wife to a husband - as Meeraa and Raadhaa had for Shree Krishn
(7)
(8)
(9)
