Sarg 60-Raavan Wakes up Kumbhkarn

Raavan got worried remembering Raam's arrows. He went to his court and said to his ministers - "Today my all Tapasyaa has failed because a human being has defeated me but this is all because of the Shaap - "Raaajaa Asur-raaya gave me Shaap that a human being will be born in my Vansh (family) who will kill me along with my chariot, that is why I consider Raam the same human being. And even Brahmaa also told me that "You will have a fear from only one man", because I did not ask the Var to win human beings and Rishi's words do not go wrong. That is why I am frightened, please do something for it."

Seeing the killing of Prahast and defeat of his own, Raavan ordered his Raakshas - "You protect our boundary wall and gates. Wake up Kumbhkarn because he is sleeping sound. Only nine days remain for him to wake up. Take his food."

Hearing this Raakshas went to the cave where Kumbhkarn was sleeping. When they entered the cave, Kumbhkarn was  drawing his breath in, so all Raakshas started pulling in  through his breath, but somehow they controlled themselves and went close to him. They started waking him up in several ways - by beating him with Moosal and Gadaa etc but nothing worked. Then they beat him with other weapons still it didn't work. When they sent elephants on his body then only he felt something. He woke up yawning and took breath normally.

He asked Raakshas whether Raajaa was all right? And what was the problem for which they had to come to wake him up. Raavan's ministers said - "We don't have any problem from any Devtaa, but we are afraid of one human being. There are two princes - Raam and Lakshman. They have surrounded our Lankaa with their army of Vaanar. They have killed our many Raakshas."

Kumbhkarn said - "Do not worry at all, I will kill all Vaanar." Then he went with Raakshas. Raakshas informed Raavan of Kumbhkarn's coming, so he asked them to bring him in. When Kumbhkarn was going in, many Vaanar saw him going. They got so much afraid of him that many of them ran away, many fell down, and many went to Raam to take shelter.

Sarg 61-Vibheeshan Tells Raam About Kumbhkarn

When many Vaanar came to Raam, He asked Vibheeshan - "I have never seen such a huge Raakshas, who is he? Tell me something about him." Vibheeshan said - "[He is Kumbhkarn] Kumbhkarn is the son of Vishravaa and presently there is no larger Raakshas present than him. He has pushed Devtaa, Gandharv etc back many times from the battlefield that is why they think him as their Kaal, Since his childhood he has been so hungry, that he ate so many people everyday that public got very sad and worried about this. So they went to Indra to complain about him. Indra hit him with his Vajra and he fell down on the ground. When he gained consciousness, he held Airaavat elephant's tusks and hit Indra's chest.

Seeing this Indra, along with other Devtaa went to Brahmaa Jee, told everything about Kumbhkarn and said - "If he continued to behave like this then he will eat all people in a very short time." Hearing this Brahmaa Jee called Kumbhkarn and said - "Drop like dead." And Kumbhkarn fell on the ground. Seeing this Raavan said - "Whatever Var you have given, it cannot be untrue, therefore please fix his time of sleep and being awake." So at Raavan's request Brahmaa Jee said - "He will sleep the whole year and will wake up for one day so that he does not wander on Prithvi." So Hey Raaghav, Today Raavan has awaken him up in his bad times, that is why these Vaanar are running away with fear. Now how they will be able to fight with him in the battlefield, I don't know. You may tell them that this is a machine, Raavan has fixed it here, maybe hearing this they become fearless."

Hearing Vibheeshan words, Raam said to Neel - "Stop the enemy's army at gates." Neel went out and made arrangements like that. Gavaaksh, Sharabh, Hanumaan, Angad etc stood at the gates and Vaanar were not afraid of Kumbhkarn.
