5-Jalandhar |
5-Shiv Jee Kills Jalandhar There are eight legends about Shiv Jee in which Shiv Jee has destroyed evil - Andhakaasur, Daksh Yagya, Gajaasur, Jalandhar, Kaam Dev, Kiraat-Arjun, Maarkandeya Muni, Tripur. Once Shiv Jee got angry with the ocean. His anger produced a Raakshas (demon) named Jalandhar (who is born from Jal - water). He grew to be a very powerful Raakshas. Nobody could win him. He married a very pious woman named Vrindaa. She was a Pativrataa (faithful to husband) woman. One day Jalandhar saw Paarvatee Jee (consort of Shiv Jee) and got attracted to Her. This resulted in a battle between Shiv Jee and Jalandhar. Since Jalandhar's wife was a Pativrataa he could not kill him like that. So he had to invent another way to kill him. He created a Chakra (wheel) in waters and challenged Jalandhar to lift it. As Jalandhar tried to lift it, it severed his head while lifting it. Slaying of this Raakshas is celebrated and enshrined in Tiruvirkudee (near Thanjaavur - Tamilnaadu, India). It is one of the Veerattaa temples. Jalandhar's widow Vrindaa is also enshrined here in a Samaadhi. It is believed that she took the form Tulasee plant. Unlike other Shiv temples, Tulasee is offered to Shiv Jee here. Shiv Jee later gave his Chakra to Vishnu and He bears it as one of his attributes (read this story here). Another Version of Jalandhar's Killing
