Dattaatreya Jee was the son of Maharshi Atri and Anasooyaa. Once Atri and his wife Anasooyaa did an intense tap for Shree Hari to get sons. Pleased with their Tap all Brahmaa, Vishnu and Mahesh appeared before them. Atri Jee got surprised to see the three Dev. He asked - "How come that I prayed for one Bhagvaaan but you three appeared before me." They said - "To whoever you were praying, He is us all three. So ask what do you want." Atri Jee said - "I did Tap to get children." All three said - "All right, we all three will appear as your sons." So Brahmaa Jee appeared as Chandramaa from Atri's eyes, Vishnu appeared as Dattaatreya and Mahesh appeared as Durvaasaa Muni. Dattaatreya used to be called as Avadhoot because he used to live without clothes and did not care for anything. He was the Ansh Avataar of Bhagavaan Vishnu. Dattaatreya has a famous dialog between him and Raajaa Yadu in which he has told him about his 24 Guru. One day Raajaa Yadu came in a forest where he saw Dattaatreya roaming around and asked for his wisdom then he told about his 24 Guru. Read this story in Bhaagvat Puraan, 11/6. Sahastrabaahu, or Kaartveerya Arjun, or Sahastraarjun pleased Dattaatreya and got four boons from him. Among them were his 1,000 arms, killed by Bhagavaan Himself, etc Dattaatreya Jee guided Vishwaamitra Jee to send Trishanku to Swarg with his mortal body. He could not have gone at all because he had the curse of his Guru Vashishth of becoming Chaandaal. Dattaatreya Je guided Vishwaamitra to give him a dip in a pond after that he got released from that Chaandaal body.
