Sarg 38-Raam Goes on Suvail Parvat's Peak

Raam said - "I want to go on Suvail Parvat and wish to stay there overnight. We will see Lankaa and Raavan's palace from there, the same Raavan who has abducted my wife to give me so much trouble, who neither knows Dharm, nor considered his family. He has done it only because of his Raakshasee (devilish) nature."

Thus getting angry with Ravan and consulting his people, Raam climbed up Suvail Parvat, Lakshman followed Him carefully carrying His bow and arrows, Sugreev and Vibheeshan and his ministers were behind Lakshman. All monkeys climbed up very fast and looked at the city in the sky. They saw its four gates and black Raakshas sitting on its boundary wall. Evening was falling and Moon rose.

Sarg 39-Raam Looks at Lankaa

Army chiefs of monkeys stayed there on Suvail Parvat overnight. Its forests were beautiful. They had many kinds of trees - Champaa, Ashok, Bakul (Maulshree or Maulsiree), Saal, Taal, Tamaal, Panas (Katahal or Jackfruit), Naag and flowering trees also like Hintaal, Arjun, Kadamb, Sataparn, Tilak, Karnikaar, Paatal etc. They were looking like Chitrarath (in Kuber's place) and Nandan Van (in Indra Puree). Papeehaa, cuckoo, cranes,  dancing peacocks were singing and were contributing to the great scenery.

When monkeys entered the forests, sweet-smelling air started flowing. A few army chiefs went to enemy's army in Lankaa with Sugreev's permission. They started digging the earth there. Digging created dust clouds which rose up to the sky. The animals and birds, bears, lions, buffaloes, deer etc got frightened with the sound of digging and ran away from there.

There was a huge peak of Trikoot Parvat shiny like gold. It was 100 Yojan wide. It was not accessible to birds as it was very high, It was difficult to climb up there even in dreams, leave alone in reality. Raavan's Lankaa was located there only. Lankaa's width was 100 Yojan. Its gates were white and boundary wall was made of gold. It was more beautiful than rainy clouds or Dev Temples or other palaces. It had a sky-high palace with 1,000 pillars. Raavan's Dev Temple was the jewel of Lankaa. It was guarded by 100 Raakshas at any given time,

Raam got very surprised to see such Lankaa which was located on such a beautiful Parvat, had so many kinds of animals, birds, flowers, trees, fruits, was full of wealth and grains. So He saw such a beautiful Lankaa with His army.

Sarg 40-Raavan

Then Raam, with Sugreev and other monkeys climbed up on Suvail Parvat's peak which was spread up to two Yojan. They stopped there for a Muhoort (48 minutes), looked around and saw Lankaa. And there He saw Raavan sitting on a peak, under the white royal umbrella, around whom Chanvar were shaking. He was wearing black robes with gold work. He had a mark of Airaavat elephant's tusk on his chest.

Raam and monkeys were still looking around that Sugreev jumped in fury and came in front of Raavan. He looked at him for a Muhoort then said harshly - "I am Raam's friend and servant. By the grace of Raam you cannot escape me today." and jumped on him. He threw Raavan's wonderful crown on the ground. Coming Sugreev swiftly to himself, Raavan said - "You are Sugreev only till you don't come to me. I will cut your neck." And Raavan beat him on the ground. Sugreev bounced like a rubber ball and beat him with his hands. Raavan fell down.

Both warriors' bodies were wounded and red with blood. Both were fighting with hands, fists, legs. They fought like this for a long time, then both fell down in the moat. Got up after some time and tightened each other with their arms. They didn't get tired. Sometimes they revolved each other, sometimes they stopped one another, sometimes they fought standing in various positions, sometimes jumped in air, sometimes sat on the ground gasping.

Then Raavan got ready to use his Maayaa, Sugreev knew it so he flew in the sky and Raavan just stood there. Sugreev came back to his camp after winning the fight.
