After Shachee Met Indra

Seeing Shachee there Indra asked her - "Why have you come here? And how did you find me?" Then Shachee spoke about Nahush's deeds and said - "If you have not protected me, he will have me in his power. I have come to alarm you. Come and rule your kingdom." At this Indra said - "This is not yet time for me. Nahush is stronger than me because he has been strengthened by Rishi, Pitar etc. But I have a plan, you will have to carry out. It must be carried out secretly and must not be disclosed to anyone. The plan is that, you go to Nahush in private and ask him to come to you riding on a nice vehicle carried by Rishi. I will be pleased like this and then I will be yours."

Hearing this Shachee went away and went to Nahush. Nahush welcomed her and said - "Welcome lady, What is your pleasure? Please accept me. I will do the same whatever you will ask me to do." Shachee said - "O Lord of Universe, I asked you to give me some time and after that I will be yours. But I have a wish, listen to it. This will show your love to me. If you will do the same I will be yours. Indra had horses, elephants, Rath (chariots) to carry him. I want you to have a novel vehicle such as never belonged to even Vishnu, Rudra or any Asur or Raakshas. Let a number of highly dignified Rishi should bring you to me in a Paalakee (palanquin)."

Raajaa Nahush got very pleased with this. He thought that at least she agreed to be his wife. He said to her - "You have really suggested me a vehicle which has never been used by anybody before. I will definitely fulfill your request. The Saptarshi (seven Rishi) and other Rishi will bring me to you. Don't you worry." He dismissed her and called upon the Saptarshi and other Rishi to carry his Paalakee to Shachee.

Shachee quickly went to Brihaspati and said - "Only a little time has left in completing Nahush's term, so please quickly find Indra." Brihaspati said - "Now you need not worry about him, he is gone, because he is employing great Rishi to carry him in a Paalakee. You may go now." Shachee went away and Brihaspati asked Agni Dev to find out Indra. Agni Dev went in a woman's form and came back in a few moments saying that "I could not find Indra, only water remains. I always hesitate to enter water." Brihaspati said - "Go, enter the water." Agni Dev said - "I will not go in the water as I will extinct in there." Brihaspati said - "Agni, you are the mouth of all Devtaa. You are the carrier of all sacred offerings." and prayed him in various ways. Then Agni said - "I will show you Indra."

Then Agni entered the seas, and other water bodies. Then he came across this particular lotus stalk in which Indra was hiding, while searching lotus flowers, He saw Indra lying in he fibers of the lotus stalk. He immediately came back to Brihaspati and reported this to him. Brihaspati went there with other Devtaa and Asur and said to Indra - "You have killed Namuchi and the two Asur Samvar and Bal of great strength, You have killed Vritra too. You have done hundred sacrifices. Rise O Indra, rise." Hearing this Indra increased himself little by little, assumed his own form and got strength too. He asked Brihaspati - "What business do you have with me now? Twashtaa's son and Vritra have been killed, who else has come up now to trouble the world?

Brihaspati said - "It is now a human being named Nahush, who, by virtue of the Divine saints, has become the Lord of the Heaven, is giving us trouble." Indra asked - "How it happened that he got the throne of Heaven? What Tap he has done for it? And how great his power?" Brihaspati said - "After you had left, Devtaa were frightened, so they wanted a king for Heaven. All Devtaa, Gandharv, Pitar etc went to Nahush and requested him to be their king. Nahush politely refused the position saying that he was not capable of holding that because he had not done so much Tap for it, then all equipped him with many types strength. But now he has put the saints in great trouble."

While Brihaspati was talking like this to Indra, Kuber, Som, Varun and Soorya's son Yam also came there, they said -"Please help us, we are all afraid even by his look. Only after you will overthrow Nahush we will be entitled to have our share in sacrifices." Indra said - "Let it be so. All, Kuber, Yam, Varun and Som will have their share from sacrifices from today." Then Agni Dev said - "You give me also the share in sacrifices, then I will also help you." Indra said - "You shall also get your share from sacrifices. There will be a single share for both Agni and Indra." Thus Indra gave to Kuber the sovereignty over the Yaksh and all over the wealth, to Yam the sovereignty over the Pitars, and to Varun the sovereignty over waters.

At the same time Muni Agastya appeared there, he said - "How fortunate that Vritra has been killed and Nahush has been overthrown from the Heaven." Indra worshipped him and after seating on a comfortable seat, Muni said - "Let me tell you how Nahush has been overthrown from Heaven. While carrying Nahush, the Braahman asked Nahush - "There are certain hymns to be recited when sprinkling the cows, are they authentic or not?" Raajaa had already lost his senses, so he said - "No, They are not authentic." The Rishi said - "Since you are not taking righteous path, that is why you are telling them not authentic" And he touched my head with his foot, at the same time he lost his power and good looks. I said - "Since you have told that Ved's hymns are not authentic, and you have touched my head with your foot, and you have used these saints like animals, you fall from Heaven headlong. The fruits of your all good actions are over. You will be in snake form for 10,000 years, roam over the Earth. When the period is over, you may come back to Heaven. He was overthrown from Heaven in this way. Now please come back to Heaven."

Note:
Here another version is given which I have been hearing for long - That when the Rishi were carrying Nahush in palanquin to Shachee's palace, because Nahush was in hurry to reach her palace and was overjoyed with the invitation of Shachee, he asked Rishi to go faster saying "Sarp, Sarp" (in Sanskrit Sarp also means "go faster, go faster"). Since Rishi had no such previous experience of carrying somebody on their shoulders they were not able to carry him far and fast and they got tired soon. At this Nahush kicked Muni Agastya on his head with his foot, and whipped him, and again said - "Sarp, Sarp." At this Muni cursed him - "You are saying us "Sarp, Sarp", so you yourself become Sarp (Snake) on Earth and stay there for 10,000 years. Then Nahush woke up from his dream and asked forgiveness from Muni. Then Muni said - "When Paandav will be born on Earth, and they will be roaming in exile, one of them will answer your questions, then you will be released from this Shaap." (Read this story here)

All were happy to hear this, and said - "How fortunate that intelligent Muni has killed Nahush." Indra came back to Heaven. Then Angiraa came there and worshipped Indra by reciting hymns from Atharv Ved. So Indra granted him a boon - "You will be known as Rishi Atharvaangiraa as from today in Atharv Ved and you will also get share in sacrifices."

Shalya said to Yudhishthir - "So this was the misery of Indra and his wife, and while killing his enemies, even he had to hide himself. So you are also suffering in forest with Draupadee, and as he got his kingdom back, you will also get your kingdom back. I told this story because this story is supposed to give victory. In fact Duryodhan will die of his own crime." Yudhishthir honored him and he blessed him and went away to Kuru's army.

End of the Story of Nahush
