This section, Braahm Parv, is on p 1-222 of the book and mostly contains information about Soorya.

Chyavan Rishi

(Chap 19) Sumantu Muni said - "Hey Raajan, On Dwiteeyaa Tithi, Chyavan Rishi gave Som Ras to Ashwinee Kumaar in Indra's Yagya." The King asked - "How did he do that? Was Indra not able to do anything because of Chyavan Rishi's Tapasyaa?" Sumantu Muni said - "During the Sandhyaa of Sat Yug, Chyavan Rishi was doing Tapasyaa for quite some time. Once King Sharyaati came there along with his army and family for Gangaa Snaan. They stayed near Chyavan Rishi's Aashram and took bath in Gangaa River. When he got ready to go back to his city, his army's excretion system failed, they couldn't see anything. The king got worried seeing this, he asked everybody - "This is Chyavan Rishi's Aashram, did anybody do wrong to him?" But everybody denied.

Then Sukanyaa, King's daughter, said to him - "I saw one wonder here. I was wandering in the forest, that I heard "Sukanyaa, come here, come here." I went there and saw a high Valmeeki (an anthill). I saw two shining lamps like things inside the holes of that Valmeeki. In my foolishness, I pierced them with Kush grass, this calmed down the power of those lamps." Hearing this the King got worried and went to Rishi. Since he was sitting in his Samaadhi for a long time, ants had built their house on his body, and the two lamps which Sukanyaa pierced were his two eyes.

The King said to him - "My daughter has committed a great crime towards you, please forgive her." Rishi said - "I have already forgiven her, but you marry you daughter to me, this will do good to you. So the king married his daughter to Rishi. His army got relieved and he came back to his city. Sukanyaa also started serving Rishi sincerely. She put her princess guise off and put on Aashram guise. After a while Muni asked Sukanyaa to give him a child. Sukanyaa said politely - "I cannot disobey you, but for this you must get young age and good clothes and jewelry." Rishi said - "Neither I have beauty, nor I have wealth like your father, so that I can gather all enjoyable things." Sukanyaa said - "You have lots of Tap, this is not a big thing for you." Muni said - "I am not going to waste my Tap for this trivial thing." And he continued his Tap.

After some time Ashwinee Kumaar were going somewhere that they saw Sukanyaa. They asked her - "Who are you, and what are doing in this terrible forest?" Sukanyaa said - "I am King Sharyaati's daughter Sukanyaa. My husband Chyavan Rishi lives here, so I live with him. Who are you?" Ashwinee Kumaar said - "We are Ashwinee Kumaar. What will you get from this old Rishi, you may choose one of us as your husband." Sukanyaa said - "You are Devtaa. It is not good for you to say like this to me. I am Pativrataa and I serve him with all my heart, speech and actions." Ashwinee Kumaar said - "If you say so, then we can make him young and handsome. We three will come out of Gangaa River after taking bath, then you may choose anybody you like." Sukanyaa said - "I can't say anything without the permission of my husband." Ashwinee Kumaar said - "We are waiting her, you may go and ask him."

Sukanyaa went to her husband and told him everything. Chayavan Rishi came with Sukanyaa and said to them - "O Ashwinee Kumaar, I accept your condition, you make me young and handsome then Sukanyaa may choose anybody she likes." So the three dipped in Gangaa River and when they came out they all looked same. Sukanyaa couldn't recognize her husband so she prayed Ashwinee Kumaar - "When I did not abandon my ugly old husband, then how can I abandon my young handsome husband? Please help me." Ashwinee Kumaar got very pleased with her prayer, they became Devtaa, so Sukanyaa saw that two of them were not blinking, so she chose the third one.

Chyavan Rishi said - "You have obliged me greatly, tell me what can I do for you?" Ashwinee Kumaar said - "If you can do it, please get Yagya share to us also." Chayavan Muni accepted this and he came back to his Aashram. When Sharyaati came to know bout this he also came to see his daughter and new son-in-law. He got very happy to see Chyavan Muni. Chyavan Muni said - "Now you make arrangement for a Yagya, I will do it." Sharyaati made the arrangements and Chayavan Rishi also came there with Sukanyaa. All Devtaa came to take their share of the Yagya. Ashwinee Kumaar also came there. Indra understood the purpose of their coming there. He said - "They are not supposed to get Yagya share." Chyavan Muni said - "They are Devtaa, they have obliged me, I have invited them, that is why I will surely give them Yagya share."

Indra got angry and said - "If you will not listen to me, I will hit you with my Vajra." Still Chayvan Muni gave them the Yagya share. Seeing this Indra took out his Vajra and got ready to hit Muni with it, but Muni froze his hand. At the same time Brahmaa Jee came there and asked Muni to free Indra. Muni obeyed Brahmaa Jee. Indra said - "To spread the fame of your Tap I acted like this. From today Ashwinee Kumaar will also get their Yagya share." When Chyavan Rishi came to his Aashram, he saw that there were many palaces with all kinds of comforts in them. Chyavan Muni got very happy to see this and he praise Indra for this. Thus on Dwiteeyaa Ashwinee Kumaar got their Yagya share.

Whoever desires to be beautiful, he should start this Vrat from Kaartik Shukla Dwiteeyaa and eat only flowers for the whole year. Whichever Havishya flowers are available in whichever season, he should eat those flowers only. Complete this Vrat by donating golden or silver flowers or lotus flowers to Braahman. This is called Pushp Dwiteeyaa, in the same way there is Phal (fruit) Dwiteeyaa. It is known as A-Shoonya-Shayanaa Dwiteeyaa. if a woman does this she never becomes widow and never gets separated from her husband.

This Vrat is done when Vishnu goes to sleep. On Shraavan Krishn Dwiteeyaa, one should worship Vishnu and Lakshmee with this Mantra ( Mantra is given on p 43 ) and keep fast on that day. Offer the fruits to Bhagavaan's bed, eat the same fruits in the night and give Dakshinaa to Braahman next day. One should not offer bitter, unripe and sour fruits to Bhagavaan. Dates, coconut, etc sweet fruits should be offered to Him. Thus whoever keeps this Vrat for four months, his family life doesn't get disturbed for three lives. This was Dwiteeyaa Vrat I told you.
