Garud Puraan is the 17th Puraan in the row of 18 major Puraan. This Puraan is divided in and contains 19,000 Shlok (verses) distributed among 248 chapters. One of the chapters has 14 chapters to be read during the 11 days after a person passes away during the mourning time to know how the Jeev leaves the body, before and after how its life is and many other Dharm, what we missed out in the past lives and current life. Most important time is the last 2 Muhoort of life, just after death and just before death. If you can understand Telugu you may please visit www.pravachanam.com and listen to Saam Ved Shanmukh Sharma on this one of the best explanations one can hear. We all know that this Puraan is read when some one in the family passes away. Normally people read it or listen to it for 11/12 days after somebody has died. It is said that this Puraan was taught by Vishnu himself to Garud Jee. While the first part deals with stories from the two epics - Mahaabhaarat and Raamaayan - in addition to certain medicines and uses of precious stones etc, the second part deals with the Pret Kalp - the journey of Jeev after death. It describes the status of soul after death, its journey from after death to born again, Narak (Hell) etc. It suggests that Moksh or liberation from the cycle of births and deaths is through devotion to Vishnu. This tells about spirituality and gives some relief to bereaved people from the sorrow and grief of the dead.
