How to Worship Vishnu

Paarvatee Jee said - "You have described Raam and Krishn's Kathaa in detail which is vrry wonderful. Even if I listen to it for Kalp, I cannot be satisfied. Now I wish to listen to the glory of Vishnu and the method of His worship." Mahaadev Jee said - "Hey Paarvatee, Bhagavaan's Moorti (Vigraha or statue or idol) has been told of two  types - "Sthaapit" (established) and "Swayam Vyakt" (self manifested). Whatever idol is made of stone, clay, wood, or iron and then is established by the method prescribed in Shruti or Smriti that is called "Sthaapit Vigraha"; and wherever Bhagavaan has appeared Himself, that is called "Swayam Vyakt" Vigraha. Whatever type of Vigraha of Bhagavaan is there, one must worship it. For the worship of Devtaa and Maharshi, Bhagavaan Himself appears before them. Who imagines Him in whichever form, He appears in the same form for him on Prithvi, therefore one should worship Him in the same form.

In Shree Rang Kshetra, one should worship "sleeping Vishnu". In Kaashee Puree, Bhagavaan Maadhav is also my Isht Dev. I whichever place, Bhagavaan appears in whichever form, I worship Him in the same form. When Bhagavaan appears before somebody, He bestows boon to the person. In holy Jamboo Dweep (island), especially in Bhaarat Varsh, Vishnu always exists in idols; that is why Muni and Devtaa have worshipped Vishnu in Bhaarat Varsh only by Tap, Yagya and other Karm. Bhagavaan Himself has appeared in Indradyumn Sthal, Koorm Sthaan, Sinhaachal, Karaveerak, Kaashee, Prayaag, Saumya, Shaalgraamaarchan, Dwaarakaa, Naimish Aranya, Badrik Aashram, Kritshauch Teerth, Pundareek Teerth, Dandak Van, Mathuraa, Venkataachal, Shwetaadri, Garudaachal, Kaanchee, Anant Shayan, Shree Rang, Bhairav Giri, Naaraayanaachal, Varaah Teerth, and Vaaman Aashram places, that is why He fulfill all desires at these places. Whatever establishment of any Vigraha is done by Mantra, that has special importance. If such idols are in any house, they are to be specially worshipped.

Paarvatee, The rules for worshipping Bhagavaan mentally are alike for everybody. Therefore all should worship Him according to their own rules. Who are dependent only on Vishnu, or worship only Him, or are Ved knower, Tattwa Gyaanee, Guru Bhakt, Saadhu, Braahman, they should all worship Hari. They should follow Ved prescribed conduct and Dharm. After being cleaned in the morning, one should worship Hari. Worship his "Sthaapit" or "Swayam Vyakt" idol with incense, flower, rice etc. The Poojaa prescribed by Ved is called "Shraut". The Poojaa done by Vaasishthee method is called "Smaart". The rules written in Paanchraatra are called "Aagam". Vishnu's worship is very good, one should never miss it. There are 16 Upachaar for worshipping Him, so one should worship Him according to one's own capacity. Whatever remains from Naivedya, the same should be used for Havan.

Meditate on Hari's form and do Jaap of 8-letter Mantra 1,000 or 100 times. Then do mental worship and take a break. One should take himself and offer others some food and drink. After they have gone, feed others in the house, and he himself should take food in the last with his wife. One should never worship Yaksh, Raakshas and Pret. This worship makes him Chaandaal and destroys his all Punya (Daan, Vrat, Poojaa etc) of many lives. To afflict people and taking things of others without their permission, are the causes of Narak.

Karm are of three types - Nitya, Naimittik and Kaamya. In the same way Gyaan is also three types - Krityaa-Kritya Vivek Gyaan (knowledge of all Karm), Parlok Chintan Gyaan (knowledge about the other world), and Vishnu Praapti Saadhan Gyaan (knowledge about the means of attaining Vishnu). Under Naimittik Karm, one should specially worship Bhagavaan methodically. In Kaartik Maas, worship Hari with jasmine flowers and Tulasee leaves everyday, offer lamp continuously and live in a disciplined way. On the last day feed Braahman. In Paush Maas, one should rise before sunrise, and worship with lotus and white Kaner flowers, offer incense, lamp and Naivedya. In the end of the month feed Bhakt people. In the Maagh Maas, one should take bath at the time of sunrise, if in river, it is better; and worship Maadhav with lotus flowers and offer Kheer mixed with melted butter.

One should specially worship on Amaavasyaa, Saturday, Vaishnav Nakshatra (Shravan Nakshatra), Soorya Sankraanti, in Vyateepaat Yog, Lunar and Solar Eclipses, Hari's birth Nakshatra time, according to one's capacity. Who doesn't worship Bhakt after worshipping Hari, he is not Hari's Bhakt.

Glory of Raam Naam

Paarvatee Jee said - "Now I will worship Hari." Mahaadev Jee said - "This is very good." Vashishth Jee said - "Then Paarvatee Jee started taking food only after doing Vishnu Sahastra Naam. One day Shankar Jee called Paarvatee Jee to have food with him, Paarvatee Jee said - "I will take food after reading Vishnu Sahastra Naam." Maaadev Jee said - "You are blessed, because it is very difficult to have Bhakti in Vishnu's feet without destiny. I do only Jaap of "Raam, Raam". Raam Naam is equal to the whole Sahastra Naam. All names starting with "R" please me. You just take Raam Naam and eat food." So Paarvatee Jee said "Raam" and took food with Shankar Jee.

She then asked - "Deveshwar, You told me that Raam Naam is equal to Sahastra Naam, hearing this I have developed interest in Raam Naam, so tell me if there are other names of Raam." Mahaadev Jee said - "I tell you His names. All worldly and Vaidik words are Raam's names, but among them these Sahastra Naam are more popular, and even among those Sahastra Naam, 108 names are very popular. (Raam's 108 names are given here on p 995-997 in Hindi and on 997-998 in Sanskrit Shlok) . Who reads or listens these names, he gets freed from the sins of millions of lives. By doing Paath of these names water becomes land, enemy becomes friend, king becomes slave, burning fire puts off, all beings become favorable, moving Lakshmee becomes stable, all beings of Tri-Lok are under control, fulfills all wishes. Devee, Who does the Paath of even this Mantra, he becomes free from all sins and attains Vishnu's Saayujya."

Raamaaya Raambhadraaya Raamchandraaya Vedhase
Raghunaathaaya Naathaaya Seetaayaah Pataye Namah

Vashishth Jee said - "Hearing that Paarvatee Jee started doing Jaap of that Mantra and lived there happily."

Status of Vishnu in Tri-Dev and Postscript to the Puraan

Vashishth Jee said - " In earlier times, once Swaayambhuv Manu went to Mandaraachal Parvat to do a Yagya. Many Rishi Muni of rigid vows came in that Yagya. When the Yagya was started, Muni said among themselves - "Which Devtaa is the best and worth worshipping for Ved knower Braahman? Who has been prayed more among Brahmaa, Vishnu and Mahesh? Whose Charanodak is worth taking? Whose Prasaad is the holiest one?" All Rishi Muni argued a lot about this. Some said, "It was Brahmaa."; some said, "Soorya is the highest."; some said - "Brahmaa Jee is the most worshipped Devtaa.". Then Manu said - "Who is pure, Sattwa, has lotus flower like eyes, is Lord of Shree Devee, only He is to be worshipped by Braahman."

Hearing this Rishi asked Manu - "Only you are able to remove our doubts. Therefore you go to these three Devtaa - Brahmaa, Vishnu and Mahaadev." So Bhrigu immediately went to Kailaash Parvat. There he saw Nandi standing at the door holding a trident in his hand. Bhrigu Jee said to him - "I am Bhrigu. I am a Braahman and have come here to have Darshan of Mahaadev. Inform him about my coming." Nandi said to him in a harsh voice - "You cannot see him now. He is with Devee at this hour. If you want to live then go back." Bhrigu Jee said angrily - "This Rudra doesn't know this Braahman under the influence of Tamo Gun, therefore whatever food, flower, fruit will be offered to him will not be worth eating." And thus cursing him he came back from there.

After this he went to Brahm Lok. There he saw Brahmaa Jee sitting with other Devtaa. Bhrigu Jee greeted him with folded hands and stood in front of him quietly. But Brahmaa Jee did not pay any attention to him. At that time he was sitting on the Aasan of lotus flower. Seeing this Bhrigu Jee said - "You have ignored me under the influence of Rajo Gun, therefore nobody in the whole world will worship you." Thus cursing Brahmaa Jee, he came to the shore of Ksheer Saagar in Vishnu Lok. The Mahaatmaa people living there welcomed him and he went to Bhagavaan's inner apartments without hesitation. There he saw Lakshmeepati sleeping on the bed of Shesh Naag. Lakshmee was massaging His feet. Seeing Him Muni got very angry and hit Him on His chest with his left foot. Bhagavaan immediately got up and said - "Today I am blessed." and He started massaging his foot. He then said - "Today I am blessed that your foot touched my body. Whichever dust of Braahman's feet is like bridge to cross this world sea, it should always make me holy."

Then He worshipped Bhrigu Jee. Bhrigu Jee greeted him with his folded hands and said - "Oh, How lovely form is this of yours? You are the sea of qualities. Only you are the faithful to Braahman and Purushottam. Only you are worthy to worship, that is why every Braahman should worship you and take Prasaad of the Naivedya offered to you. Bhagavan, I have come here sent by Rishi and Muni. I kept this foot on your chest only to test your qualities and conduct. Please, pardon me for that." Bhrigu did Pranaam in His feet and came back to Rishi and Muni and told them everything. He said - "Brahmaa is influenced by Rajo Gun, and Shiv is influenced by Tamo Gun. Only Naaraayan is the Devtaa of all Braahman. Only by remembering Him all beings get free from sins. Only His Prasaad is worthy to be taken. Therefore you should worship Vishnu with His 8-letter Mantra. One should always do Havan, Daan and Jap only for Him."

Vashishth Jee says - "Then Rishi and Muni did Pranaam to him, took Deekshaa of Mantra and worshipped Vishnu. I have told you all this in context. Raam is Purushottam so if you desire for Param Pad, go to Raam. Thus this Padm Puraan was told to you. Who reads this everyday, his Bhakti increases in Vishnu day by day. Who reads its even one or half Shlok of this Puraan daily, he certainly gets the fruit of Ashwamedh Yagya."

Soot Jee said - "Hearing all this from his Guru Vashishth Jee, the King Dileep did Pranaam to him and took Deekshaa of Vishnu Mantra from him. Then throughout his life he worshipped Hrisheekesh and in the end attained Param Dhaam."
