There are some indications in Vaalmeeki Raaamaayan which tell about the possible number of people living in Lankaa....

(1) When Raavan brings Seetaa in Lankaa, he shows his Lankaa to Her and says that - "100 million (10 Crore) Raakshas are here. 220 million (22 Crore) are there. Thus I am the King of 320 million Raakshas. (see 3/21)

(2) Janasthaan was the part of Lankaa and Raavan had kept his some people there as Lankaa's guard. Everybody knows that he had there -
14,000 Raakshas under Khar, Dooshan and Trishiraa
