44-Jamboo Dweep

Back to Notes

Jamboo Dweep
[From Valmiki Ramayan 4/10/58]

Jamboo Dweep is the Indian subcontinent. The Sun rises in the East on the peak of this Saumanas, which itself is on the zenith of Udaya Mountain (or Udayaachal). Then he traverses above Jamboo Dweep, the Indian Subcontinent, including South-East Asia, and sets in the West on the mountains called Astaa Adri (Astaachal), 'the Sunset Mountain...'.

Then he courses northerly on the other side of the globe via Mount Meru in heavens to Jamboo Dweep, and to rise again on this Mount Sunrise. As Jamboo Dweep, the subcontinent lies southernly to that heavenly Mount Meru, and down East-South of Saumanas, this subcontinent can happily see the First Sun, daily.

This gives raise to the Indian name of India, that is Bhaarat, bhaa+ratah = Sun+delights... means "the place where the Sun delights firstly, that is Bhaarat...".
