Sarg 53-Raam Gets Sad

Raam did Sandhyaa under the tree and said to Lakshman - "This is our first night outside the city, that is why we have to be very careful, because the security of Seetaa depends on us. Let us pass this night anyhow on straws collected by us only." Stretching Himself on the bare ground Raam said to Lakshman - "Today Raajaa Dasharath must be very sad and Kaikeyee must be very happy, because of the fulfillment of her wishes.

I am just worried [about the life of king] lest she takes life of Raajaa seeing Bharat coming for his coronation. After my coming here Raajaa is without any help and since he is under the control of Kaikeyee, he cannot protect even himself. Bharat is happy with his wife and will be ruling Koshal Desh. He who pursues sensual pleasures over his real interests and discipline becomes distressed soon as Raajaa Dasharath is now.

It seems that Kaikeyee is in our house to take Raaja's life, to send me in exile, and to crown Bharat as king. She might harm Kaushalyaa and Sumitraa too because of their relationship with me. Therefore, brother, you go to Ayodhyaa just in the morning. and I will go to Dandak Van with Seetaa. At least you will be there to protect Kaushalyaa. You hand over my mother to Bharat. In some past life my mother must have deprived mothers from their sons that is why this calamity has fallen up on her. Let no woman give birth to such a son like me who is the cause of constant grief to His mother.

Kaushalyaa's Mainaa (a talking bird kept as pet) is more affectionate than I, because at least it talks, "Bite, Oh parrot, the foot of the enemy". But what can I do for her? Oh Maa, you have a poor luck. I can ruin everything with only one arrow, but this time is not to show the bravery, and I do not want to do any wrongful act to ruin my prospects in the other world, that is why I did not allow myself to be crowned." Saying thus Raam got silent because of the quiet night in an uninhibited forest. His face full of tears

Lakshman consoled Him - "It is not good for you to be so sad, because it stresses Seetaa and me. We both cannot live without you. I do not want to see even Shatrughn and Maa Sumitraa without you, nor I want to enjoy Swarg without you."

Then Raam rested on the bed prepared by Lakshman under the banyan tree. Hearing Lakshman Raam decided to live in forest with Lakshman for all the 14 years of exile. They stayed in that wild forest fearlessly except a couple of lions on the slopes of a mountain.

Sarg 54-Raam in Bharadwaaj Muni's Aashram

Next day morning they again started their journey. They crossed forests and arrived at Gangaa-Jamunaa Sangam in the evening. On the way they found many kinds of blossomed and fruit trees. They heard the loud noise of meeting two rivers and there was lying some cut wood also. Then they came to Bharadwaaj Muni's Aashram. They halted a bit outside the Aashram then they went to Bharadwaaj Muni to take his permission to stay there and greeted him with joined palms.

There Raam introduced Himself - "We are sons of Raajaa Dasharath and our names are Raam and Lakshman, and She is my wife, the daughter of Raajaa Janak, Seetaa. We have come to forest by the order of our father for 14 years, and we will spend our time here eating fruits, flowers and Kand etc." Muni offered them Madhupark, then Kand, roots, flowers to eat and a pot of water and a place to stay. Thus he welcomed them.

Raam accepted those things and sat there with Muni. Muni said - "Raam, I have heard about you. We have been waiting for you for some time. You were exiled without any fault, I heard about that also. This place is very good, so you may stay here happily. Raam said - "Ayodhyaa is nearby. Its public will know soon that we are here. They will surely come to see Seetaa and me, that is why I do not consider this place good to stay, therefore you tell me such a place which Janak-Nandinee may like to live."

Muni said - "At the distance of ten Krosh (Kos), there is a place where Rishi Muni live. There lives a species of black monkeys also and it is haunted by apes and bears. The place name is Chitrakoot Parvat which closely resembles Gandhmaadan Parvat. It is a very beautiful. Whoever sees it he automatically starts doing Punya Karm never sets his mind on sin. There live such great people who have done Tapasyaa for hundreds of years and have got Swarg. I consider that mountain very lonely and comfortable for your living, but today you stay with me.

Muni took care of their beloved guests - Raam, Lakshman and Seetaa. As they were very tired they passed their night there comfortably. Next day morning Raam said - "Hey Muni, We stayed here very comfortably, now please permit us to fix our Aashram." Bharadwaaj Muni said - "Raam, you must go to Chitrakoot. It is a beautiful place and there are lots of roots, fruits and honey there. Since the herds of deer, elephants and peacocks wander around freely, you will be easily visible to them. Many rivers and waterfalls are there for water. Stay there and be happy."
