Aadi Kavi Vaalmeeki -
Now Vaalmeeki had become a great devotee of Raam. The first poetry, in the form of a Shlok, came out from his mouth only. He was surprised to hear that how he pronounced that Shlok. This introduction of Shlok meter in Sanskrit poetry makes him Aadi Kavi (the first poet). After that he wrote Raamaayan which is known as "Vaalmeeki Raamaayan". It is the first poetry in Sanskrit language in Shlok meter. It is believed to be written even before Raam's birth, as it is clear from Padm Puraan's this Kathaa -

Vaalmeeki Receives Raam -
Vaalmeeki Jee received Raam, Lakshman and Seetaa at his Aashram, when they were in exile and suggested them to live in Chitrakoot, so they built their Aashram in Chitrakoot and lived there for some time.

Vaalmeeki Shelters Seetaa -<
He sheltered Seetaa Jee when Raam had exiled Her on a blame put by a washerman on Her. She gave birth to Raam's twin sons Lav and Kush, in Vaalmeeki's Aashram only. There he taught them to sing Raamaayan he wrote. When Raam was doing Ashwamedh Yagya, they used to sing it in Raam's court. He taught Lav and Kush the art of weaponry. When Raam had sent His horse around for Ashwamedh Yagya, Lav and Kush caught that horse. The legend has it that they defeated everybody including their all uncles. Then Raam had to come Himself. As Seetaa came to know about this, She requested Rishi to stop this saying that it was not good for the sons to fight with their father. Then Vaalmeeki Jee went there and stopped the fight.

Author of Gaayatree Mantra -
Vaalmeeki Jee has written the greatest Mantra of Hinduism - the Gaayatree Mantra. Bhagavaan Krishn has said in Geetaa - "Among all Mantra I am the Gaayatree Mantra." One must do its Jaap at least 10 times a day, otherwise 100 times (1 Maalaa = 108 times) is better.
Gaayatree Mantra is -
Aum Bhhor Bhuvah Swaha, Tat Savi Tur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasya, Dheemahi Dhiyo Yonah Prachodayaat
