About Bombay (Mumbai), India
India has been British colony for about 200 years. Initially Bombay
was 7 islands - (1) Colaabaa, (2) Mazaa Gaanv, (3) Old Woman's Island,
(4) Wadaalaa, (5) Maahim, (6) Parel, and (7) Maatungaa-Sion. They were
the part of Ashok's kingdom. So Bhaiyaa and Bihaaree came here to settle
down. These 7 islands passed through many hands, - Sultaan of Gujaraat,
Portuguese, British. Every ruler left behind the proof of his residence.
The Mauryans left behind Kanheree, Mahaa Kaalee and the caves of Ghar
Puree (Elephata Caves). The Sultaan of Gujaraat built Dargaah at Maahim
and Haajee Alee. The Portuguese built the two Portuguese Churches - Prabhaa
Devee and St Andrews at Baandraa. They built forts at Sion, Maaahim,
Baandraa, and Bassien.
How these 7 islands came to be known as Bombay - the Portuguese named them
"Bom Baia" - or "Good Bay". Then British built a city
out of these 7 islands and called it Bombay. The original settlers of these
7 islands were Kolee fishermen worshiped Mumbai Devee. Her temple still
stands at Baboolnaath, near Chowpaatty. The Kolees called the island Mumbai -
means "Mumbaa Mother Goddess".
