16-Dhaumya

Dhaumya
Dhaumya Rishi is very well known Rishi in the context of Mahaabhaarat. There are three places where Dhaumya name is mentioned in MBH.

(1) The first time it is mentioned in Aadi Parv in the context of Janamejaya's Sarp Yagya, that Why Rishi Uttank was eager to have this Sarp Yagya. Uttank Rishi was the disciple of Ved; and Ved was the disciple of Dhaumya, along with two other disciples - Aaruni and Upamanyu. Here Dhaumya Rishi's name has been told as Ayod-Dhaumya. So this Ayod-Dhaumya had three disciples - Aaruni, Upamanyu and Ved and Ved had one disciple Uttank.

(2) Further we find another Dhaumya Rishi. When Paandav were going to attend the Swayamvar of Draupadee, Arjun met a gandharv named Angaarparn who suggested him that they should have a Kul Guru at their head. Arjun asked him - "To whom to appoint?" he replied - "Here is a Rishi Dhaumya who is doing Tapasyaa, he will be good for you." So Paandav appointed Rishi Dhaumya as their Kul Guru who stayed with them till the end. This Dhaumya is said to be the younger brother of Deval Rishi.

Deval Rishi is said to be the son of Pratyoosh named Vasu - these Vasu were the sons of Daksh's daughter Vasu who was married to Dharm. It means Dharm and Vasu had 8 sons called Vasu, and one of them, Pratyoosh had two sons - Deval Rishhi and Dhaumya Rishi. It is also noted here that one Vasu was born on Prithvi as Bheeshm as per curse of Vashishth Jee.

(3) Now we find another Dhaumya, in Anushaasan Parv, when Satyabhaamaa requests Krishn to give her children, and Krishn goes to mountains. There He finds a Rishi whose name is also Dhaumya. This Dhaumya introduces himself to Krishn as the son of Vyaaghrapaad Rishi and the younger brother of Upamanyu.

Now arise some questions - that who is this third Dhaumya
(1) Who is the son of Vyaaghrapaad - Is he the same Vyaaghrapaad who was a devotee of Shiv and he got tiger's legs and claws from him to bring flowers for his worship? Although his son's name Upamanyu is mentioned in his biography, but not of Dhaumya as his son.

(2) And is this Vyaaghrapaad the same Vyaaghrapaad who lived in Chidaambaram and was a great Shiv Bhakt. He asked Shiv Jee to give him the tiger's feet and claws so that he could bring fresh flowers for his worship daily. And for the same reason he became known as Vyaaghrapaad. He could  not be the same as according to the account of his life, he lived only 200 years.

(3) And as Shiv Jee bestowed him the boon of milk ocean, he does not seem to be the disciple Ayod-Dhaumya

(4) Whose younger brother is Upamanyu - this Dhaumya cannot be Ayod-Dhaumya, because Upamnayu who was his elder brother cannot be his disciple
