Braahman's Discourse-3

The Braahman said - "In this connection, there is an ancient story about Chaaturhotra (sacrifice). Listen to its wonderful mystery as I tell you about it. The agent, the instrument, the action and the Emancipation, these are the four sacrificing priests by whom this Universe is enveloped. The nose, the tongue, the eye, the skin, the ear, the mind and the understanding - these seven should be understood as being caused by the knowledge of qualities. Smell, taste, color, sound, touch, the objects of the understanding are caused by Karm (action). He who smells, he who eats, he who sees, he who speaks, he who hears, he who thinks, and he who understands; these seven should be known as caused by the agents. Possessed of qualities, these enjoy their own qualities - agreeable or disagreeable.

Note :
In this sentence "These" word refers to action, agent and instrument; and the qualities of which they are possessed are goodness, passion and darkness.

Soul doesn't have any qualities. These seven are the causes of emancipation. The learned and who have sufficient knowledge and are in the position of deities, eat the oblations, each in its proper place, and agreeably to what has been ordained. The person who is not learned, eats various kinds of food, becomes the sense of mineness.

Note :
The meaning of this is that it is the senses who enjoy, not the soul. Only learned people know this. While who are not learned regard this or that to be theirs, but tin reality they are different from them. They are their selves, not their senses; although they consider them as their senses ignorantly identifying themselves with the things which they are not.

Bad food and drink spoil him, thus he destroys the food and the food destroys him. Whatever is done by Indriyaan constitute oblations which should all, after restraining the senses, be poured in the fire which burns in the body. The upward life-wind Praan is the Stotra of that sacrifice; the downward life-wind Apaan is its Shaastra; the renunciation of everything is its Dakshinaa; consciousness, mind and understanding, becoming Brahmaa are its Hotaa, Ardhwaayu, and Udgaataa. The Prashastri, his Shaastra, is truth. In olden days animals were offered to Naaraayan. Then were sung some Saam Ved prayers. That Divine Naraayan is the soul of all.

The Braahman further said - "There is only one ruler, no second beside Him, and that ruler resides in heart. I tell you about Him. Impelled by Him I move as water flows along with an inclined plane. There is only one Preceptor, no other beside Him. He resides in the heart. Now I tell you about Him. Obey your preceptor. They who are always endued with the feeling of enmity are like snakes. There is only one kinsman, no second beside Him. He resides in heart. Now I tell you about Him. Instructed by Him, kinsmen become possessed by kinsmen and the seven Rishi (Sapt Rishi) shine in firmament. There is only one dispeller, no second beside Him. He resides in the heart. I tell you about Him now. Having lived with that instructor properly, Indra attained the sovereignty over all the worlds. There is only one enemy, no second beside Him. He resides in the heart. I tell you about Him. Instructed by that preceptor all snakes in the world are always endued with the feeling of enmity.

In this reference there is cited one ancient story of the instruction of the snakes, the Devtaa, and the Rishi by Brahmaa Jee. Once Devtaa, Rishi, Asur etc asked Brahmaa Jee - "What is the most beneficial for us?" Brahmaa Jee said - "Aum", which is Brahm in one syllable. Hearing this they ran away in all directions. Among them who ran away like thus with the desire of self-instruction, first of all the snakes' characteristic became of biting, Asur's characteristic became of being pride, Devtaa felt the need of gifts, and the great Rishi felt for self-restraint. They all went to one teacher, they all heard only one word, but they all took different characteristics. So it is he who hears himself when speaking and apprehends it duly.

There is no second preceptor. All actions must follow His instructions. He who identifies himself with Him becomes Brahmchaaree. Brahm is his fire, Brahm is his origin, Brahm is his water, Brahm is his preceptor. Brahmcharya is so subtle even for learned. Who understands it instructed by Kshetragya (who understands the Truth)."

The Braahman further said - "After crossing that impassable world, which has purposes for its mosquitoes; grief and joy for its cold and heat; heedlessness for its blinding darkness; wealth for its one danger on the road; and lust and wrath as its robbers, I have entered the forest (Brahm). The Braahman's wife asked - "Where is that foremost? Where are its trees, rivers, mountains and hills? How far is that forest?"

Braahman said - "There is nothing that is separated from it. There is nothing that is more delightful than it. There is nothing more afflicting than it. There is nothing smaller than that, there is nothing huge than that. There is no happiness that can resemble it. As people enter it, they feel both joy and sorrow together. They never fear from anyone. In that forest there are seven large trees, seven fruits and seven guests. There are seven hermitages, seven forms of Yog concentration and seven forms of initiation. This is the description of forest.

Note :
The seven trees are five senses, mind and understanding. The seven fruits are pain and pleasures derived from or through them. The seven guest are powers of each of the senses, for it is they who receive the pleasures and pain. The seven hermitages are those very trees under which the guests take shelter. The seven forms of Yog are the extinctions of the seven senses. The seven forms of initiation are the repudiation, one after another, of the actions of the seven senses.

The trees of this forest produce flowers of five colors and of two kinds. Their flowers and fruits are fragrant that are beside of one color. The two trees produce many fruits and flowers that are of unmanifest colors. There is one fire here possessed of good mind that is connected with Brahm. The five senses are the fuel here. The seven forms of emancipation flowing from them are the seven forms of initiation. The qualities are the fruits and the guests eat those fruits. There the great Rishi accept the hospitality. When they are worshipped, the other forest shines forth./p>

In that forest, intelligence is the tree, emancipation is the fruit, tranquility is the shade of that tree. It has the knowledge for its resting house, contentment for its water, and the Kshetragya for its Sun. It is endless. Seven females always live there with faces downwards, and endued with the cause of generations. They take up all the different tastes from all the creatures, even as instability sucks up the Truth. From there emerge seven Rishi, among whom Vashishth is the foremost. Glory, effulgence, greatness, enlightenment, victory, perfection, and energy, these seven always follow this. Hills and mountains are also there including water born from Brahmaa. Whose wishes have been reduced, whose sins have been burned off, merging themselves in their souls succeed in attaining Brahm."
