Durgaa Devee |
The Great
Goddess Durgaa is exquisitely beautiful. Her form is blindingly bright,
with three lotus-like eyes, 10 powerful hands, lush hair with beautiful
curls, a red-golden glow from her skin and a quarter Moon (2nd Phase) on
her forehead. She wears a shiny oceanic blue attire emitting fierce
rays. Her ornaments are carved beautifully of gold, with ocean pearls
and precious stones embedded in it. Each god gave her his own most
powerful weapons - a few of them are : Durgaa is the higher, more refined and benign symbol of the unconscious (than Kaalee). She has 8 hands representing the eightfold elements of man. She wears a Maalaa of human heads to symbolize her wisdom and power. These heads are generally 52 in number, representing the 52 letters of the Sanskrit alphabet, which are the outer manifestations of Shabd Brahm or Brahmaa in the form of sound. Durgaa is the remover of all evil consequences of life and the giver of power and peace that is released from Moolaadhaar Chakra. At the end of the 8th and beginning of the 9th day of waxing Moon, Chand and Mund Raakshas came to fight the goddess. She turned blue with anger and goddess Chaamundaa leaped out of her third eye. Her form was the most powerful one with 3 red eyes, blood-filled tongue and dark skin; who finally killed the twin demons with her sword. This form of the Divine goddess is worshipped during the Sandhi Kshan (joint time of the 8th and the 9th day) of Durgaa Poojaa festival, as Chandee Poojaa. Finally on the tenth day of waxing Moon, goddess Durgaa killed Mahishaasur with her trident. That is why she is called Mahishaasur Mardinee also. According to the narrative from the Devee Mahaatmya of the Maarkandeya Puraan, the form of Durgaa was created as a warrior goddess to fight a demon. The demon's father Rambh, king of the demons, once fell in love with a water buffalo, and Mahish Asur (the demon Mahish) was born out of this union. He is therefore able to change between human and buffalo form at will (Mahish means "buffalo"). Through intense prayers to Brahmaa, Mahishaasur had the boon that he could not be defeated by any man or god. He unleashed a reign of terror on earth, Heaven and the nether worlds. That is why the woman was created to kill him. Eventually, since only a woman could kill him, the Holy Male Trinity (Brahmaa, Vishnu and Mahesh) went down to the Gangaa River and prayed the Mantra, "Om Namo Devaaya", imploring of the great goddess Devee to save their realm from ruin. They were blessed with her compassion when the goddess Durgaa was born out of the river.
Lord Shiv gave her a face. Thus the Devee was formed from the rays of thousands of gods. At that point the gods thought that this is not enough and she needs weapons and other articles too. So each one gave different articles.
Mahaadev gave her Trishool. Similarly others also gave her different articles that shall increase her power and radiance. Thus formed the most beautiful and most brilliant and powerful Devee Durgaa.
