15-Varg-D12 - Dwaadashaansh and D60 - Shashtiyaansh
Horasara of Phrituyasas: Effects of Lagna in Various Navaansh

D-12 Dwaadashaansh
[BPHS, Ch. 6, 7]
15. Dwaadashaansh. The reckoning of the Dwaadashaansh (1/12th of a Raashi, or 2½ degrees each) commences from the same Raashi. In each Raashi the Lordship repeats thrice in the order of Ganesh, Ashwinee Kumaar, Yam and Sarp for the 12 Dwaadashaansas.

Use: 'parents from Dwaadashaansh'

[Phaala Deepika, Ch. 3]
4. The owners of the Dwaadashaansh or 1/12th portion of a sign are counted from that sign.

15. If the Lord of the Lagna Drekkana be in his own Varg, be associated with a benefic or be in his sign of exaltation or friendly house; if the rising Trimsamsa, Dwaadashaansh or Hora endowed with strength be in a similar position, the native will be gifted with all noble qualities, will be pure, clever, long lived sympathetic and wealthy, will be blessed with children, will be widely renowned and will enjoy royal comforts.

[Kalyana Varmas Saravali, Ch. 5]
33. One becomes devout and helpful, if a planet is in its own Dwaadashaansh.

[Kalyana Varmas Saravali, Ch. 51]
110. ABOUT OTHER DIVISIONS. The effects described in regard to individual Signs [in Navamsa] apply to Dwadashaanshas of each Sign as well. Regarding effects for various other divisions not explained, the effects related to Saptamaanshas will apply.

D-60 Shashtiyaansh
[BPHS, Ch. 6, 7]

33-41. Shashtiyaansh (1/60th part of a Raashi, or half a degree each). To calculate the Shashtiyaansh Lord, ignore the Raashi position of a Graha and take the degrees etc. it traversed in that Raashi. Multiply that figure by 2 and divide the degrees by 12. Add 1 to the remainder, which will indicate the Raashi, in which the Shashtiyaansh falls. The Lord of that Raashi is the Graha, ruling the said Shashtiyaansh. In odd Raashis the names of Shashtiyaansh are 1. Ghor, 2. Raakshas, 3. Dev, 4. Kuber, 5. Yaksh, 6. Kindar, 7. Bhrasht, 8. Kulaaghn, 9. Garal, 10. Vahni, 11. Maayaa, 12. Purishak, 13. Apampati, 14. Marutwaan, 15. Kaal, 16. Sarp, 17. Amrit, 18. Indu, 19. Mridu, 20. Komal, 21. Heramba, 22. Brahma, 23. Vishnu, 24. Maheshwara, 25. Dev, 26. Ardra, 27. Kalinas, 28. Kshitees, 29. Kamalakar, 30. Gulik, 31. Mrityu, 32. Kaal, 33. Daavaagni, 34. Ghor, 35. Yam, 36 Kantak, 37. Shuddh, 38. Amrit, 39. Purna Chandra, 40. Vish-dagdh, 41. Kulanas, 42. Vaamshakshaya, 43. Utpaat, 44. Kaal, 45. Saumya, 46. Komal, 47. Sheetal, 48. Karaaladanshtra, 49. Chandramukhee, 50. Praveen, 51. Kaal-paavak, 52. Dhannaayudh, 53. Nirmal, 54. Saumya, 55. Kroor, 56. Atisheetal, 57. Amrit, 58. Payodhi, 59. Braahman, 60. Chandra Rekha (InduRekha).

The reverse is the order for even Raashis in so much, as these names are cased. Grahas in benefic Shashtiyaansh produce auspicious, while the opposite is true in case of Grahas in malefic Shashtiyaansh.

Use: 'all indications from both Akshavedaansh and Shashtiyaansh'
[Akshavedaansh is D-45 Varg.]

[Phaala Deepika, Ch. 3]
5. In an odd sign in Kroor Shashtiyaanshas or inauspicious 1/60th portions are 1st, 2nd, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 15th, 18th, 30th, 31st, 32nd, 33rd, 34th, 35th, 39th, 40th, 42nd, 43rd, 44th, 48th, 51st, 52nd and 59th. The rest are Saumya or auspicious ones. In the case of an even sign it is necessary, that is, the Shashtiyaansh portions stated Kroor in the odd signs are the Saumya ones in the even signs and vice versa.

Divisions of a Raashi: Varg/Ansh of conditioning and fundamental Kaarmik factors:
Dwaadashaansh, Shashtiyaansh, Khavedaansh and Akshavedaansh
(c) 2008 by Revati

D-12 Dwaadashaansh: A Dwaadashaansh of a Raashi comprises of 2°30'
For 12th House, Ketu and Saturn

Calculation:
The first Dwaadashaansh of a Raashi belongs to the sign itself, the second Dwaadashaansh to the sign next to it, the third Dwaadashaansh next to the second Dwaadashaansh and on and on.

Use:
Saravali advises us to take over the effects of the Navaansh to the Dwaadashaansh. Therefore Dwaadashaansh have a similar importance than Navaansh.

All Varg where the first Ansh starts with own Raashi (Dwaadashaansh D-12, Shashtiyaansh D-60, Saptaansh D-7, Drekkaan D-3) are more related to the Raashi (1/30 part of the whole zodiac) itself, whereas the Varg with regular counting (Navaansh D-9, Dashaansh D-10, Bhaansh/Nakshatraansh (D-27) are more related to the whole zodiac.

Dwaadashaansh are related to the Bhaav Kaarak of the 12th Bhaav, Ketu and Saturn.

All indications from 12th Bhaav can be derived from Graha's placements in Dwaadashaansh:
Qualities, abilities, character traits and problems from former incarnations, problems in general, losses and expenditures, given conditions not to change (due to Kaarmik reasons)

Graha in Dwaadashaansh hint at our past, particularly at our very past incarnation; American Vaidik Astrologer David Frawley even denotes it as 'the birth chart of our past incarnation."

Graha in Dwaadashaansh indicate our Karm given to us as a result of our past incarnations, it indicates conditions not to change (e.g. the family we are born in, our parents, our social and economic circumstances). There from the importance of Shastiyaansh Varg - placements here are the fundament of our life, as a result of our deeds and good and bad activities in our past life.

Ketu links us to our past and to the universal roots with the most important root: our eternal and immortal Soul. Saturn is the bringer of Karm and Kaarmik duties in our life. Compare the position of Saturn and all Graha in D-12 (and D-60), their position in main chart and Trishaansh (D-30 present) and then their positions in Drekkaan (D-3), Navaansh (D-9), Bhaansh/Nakshatraansh (D-27) and Nava-Navaansh (D-81), directing into the future.

This is the link of these Varg:
Past Incarnation (D-12, D-60) -
Present Incarnation (D-1, D-30) -
Evolution of hidden potential (D-3, D-9, D-27) -
Future Incarnation (D-81).

Shashtiyaansh (based on Raashi division by 60) are related to all our past incarnations and our conditioning resulting there from (eg deep character traits, behavior matters, strengths and problems) whereas Dwaadashaansh relate to our past incarnation and our Karm resulting there from.

Dwaadashaansh (and Shashtiyaansh) identify our conditionings, our habitudes, our roots, our deep-rooted patterns of thinking and behavior which are underlying all our physical and mental activities. Therefore both are of utmost importance.

Saravali writes: "One becomes devout and helpful, if a planet is in its own Dwaadashaansh." This gives us a last important hint at the use of Dwaadashaansh: they describe character traits (perhaps especially with regard to social behavior).

Dwaadashaansh are indicating our social power and success as well: The link between Graha in Dwaadashaansh and Saptamaansh exists in their social attitude - both start with the same Ansh sign as the Raashi they are placed in. Saravali writes: "One becomes devout and helpful, if a planet is in its own Dwaadashaansh. "This applies for Saptamaansh as well.

D-60 Shashtiyaansh: A Shashtiyaansh of a Raashi comprises of 0°30'
For 5th and 12th Houses, Jupiter, Ketu and Saturn

Calculation:
The first Shashthiyaansh of a Raashi belongs to the sign itself, the second Shashtiyaansh to the sign next to it, the third Shashthiyaansh next to the second Shashtiyaansh and on on. The sign mapping scheme is the same as in D-12 Dwaadashaansh Varg.

Use:
Paraashar assumes Shashthiyaansh Varg as the most important one when calculating the strengths of planets in Shodash Varg Scheme - this gives an important hint at the utmost importance of this Varg.

Dwaadashaansh (D-12) are related to the very past incarnation and Karm resulting thereof - Shashthiyaansh (D-60) are a summary of all abilities and qualities derived from all our past incarnations. It is understandable that these qualities are highly conditioning our personality and our circumstances (which always fit to our personality - circumstances, surroundings and all people related to ourselves are a shadow of ourselves!).

Graha in Shashthiyaansh indicate these conditionings and show us how we  are used to planetary energies, our habitudes and all our past experiences with planetary energies - may they be in a good or a bad way (Avasthaa, Yuti with benefic or malefic tell the story).

The storyboard goes from D-60 (summary of all our incarnations) to D-12 (our past incarnations) to D-1 (birth chart of our present incarnation) and D-30 (revealing true planetary strengths and weaknesses producing our main character traits). Navaansh (D-9), Bhaansh (D-27) and Nava-Navaansh (D-81) indicate our hidden potential which must come to evolution and development, these are the Varg hinting at our future.

Shashthiyaansh are related to the Bhaav Kaarak of the 5th and 12th Bhaav, Jupiter, Ketu and Saturn.

All indications from 5th and 12th Bhaav can be derived from Graha's placements in Shashthiyaansh:
(5th Bhaav) self-expression of own personality, true nature, abilities from former incarnations, success thereof (12th Bhaav) qualities, abilities, character traits and problems from former incarnations, problems in general, losses and expenditures, given conditions not to change (due to Kaarmik reasons)

Mantreshwar divides Shashthiyaansh into auspicious and inauspicious ones: For odd signs the inauspicious Shashthiyaansh are the 1st, 2nd, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 15th, 18th, 30th, 31st, 32nd, 33rd, 34th, 35th, 39th, 40th, 42nd, 43rd, 44th, 48th, 51st, 52nd and 59th. The rest are Saumya or auspicious ones. For even signs these Shashthiyaansh are auspicious.
