12-Varg-D-3 - Drekkaan

D-3 Drekkaan -- 1/3rd of a Raashi Comprises of 10

A 3rd part of a Raashi is called Drekkan - 3 degrees. Thus there are a total of 36 Drekkans in 12 Raaashi. There are a definitions for the Lords of Drekkans. The 12 Drekkans, from Aries to Cancer, will have the Lords of the 12 Raashi in order. And this arrangement will be repeated for the other two sets too. For example, the Lord of the 1st Drekkan of Leo will be Mars (the Lord of Aries); the Lord of the 2nd Drekkan will be Venus (Lord of Taurus) and so on.

Mainly there are four major ancient texts that provide us with Drekkaan Swaroop. They are --
(1) Skand Horaa - only a few Drekkaan Swaroop quotes from this text came down to us Unknown
(2) Naarad Puraan - The 54-55-56 chapters of Naarad Puraan deal with Siddhaant, Horaa and Sanhitaa branches of astrology respectively. And the end of 55th chapter provides us with Drekkaan Swaroop as well. Unknown
(3) Sphuji Dhwaj Horaa - all quotes available but some of the shapes suggested are not in tune with the shapes described in earlier authentic text Skand Horaa and Naarad Puraan and the later day authentic text Brihat Jataka of Mihir .3rd century AD
(4) Brihat Jataka - all quotes available and is in tune with available quotes of Skand Horaa 6th century AD.

There is a total of 12 x 3 = 36 Tri-bhaag (Drekkaan).  Description regarding only 5 out of those 36 is available to us from Skand Horaa. Drekkaan Swaroop provided by Naarad Puraan and Brihat Jataka seems to be more in tune with Skanda Horaa opinion and description judging from the comparison of 5 available quotes from Skand Horaa with the quotes available from Naarad Puraan, Brihat Jataka and Sphuji Dhwaj Horaa.

Calculation:
The 1st Drekkaan of a Raashi belongs to the sign of the Raashi itself, the second Drekkaan belongs to the sign in 5th to it and the third Drekkaan belongs to the sign in 9th to it.

D-3, D-7 and D-9 etc Varg are very much cast mathematically. For example in D-3, a sign is divided in three parts and each part goes as per a definite rule. Like if we divide a Sign Representing Dharm, all its three parts will belong to Dharm and therefore can not go to Arth or Kaam etc. First part remain in itself Dharm Kon and second part goes to second Dharm Trikon and the third part goes to third Dharm Trikon. Similarly, it is done in Arth, Kaam and Moksh signs lalso.

Use:
Drekkaan (10) are based on Trikon, whereas Chaturthaansh (7.5) are based on Kendra. Trikon describe our Dharm: our vocation, our calling, our mission in this life, our duties and obligations in your life; the law ruling our life. They denote fortune, luck factors and success and the happiness resulting thereof.

Many people use Drekkaan for analyzing their siblings, but the exact wording in BPHS is 'happiness from co-borns'. 'Happiness' is a mental state denoting luck, inner peace, inner state of mind, 'from co-borns' related to our family as well as to all our contemporaries (of our own generation). Trikon are directly related to happiness and success.

Drekkaan show how to achieve happiness, success and fortunes through the particular planetary energies (represented by Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Neptune, Uranus and Pluto), they indicate the way to success by best using planetary energies. This is meant by 'happiness' in BPHS. Special perspective is achieving this happiness through other people of our generation, our contemporaries. Therefore Drekkaan is socially related as well.

Drekkaan are related to the Bhaav Kaarak of the 3rd Bhaav, Mars.

All indications from 3rd Bhaav can be derived from Graha's placements in Drekkaans: ambitions, desires and wishes to be fulfilled, interests, initiatives and activities to full own wishes, courage, brothers and sisters and happiness thereof.

Serpent Drekkaan (most difficult, 'evil' Drekkaan): The 2nd and 3rd Drekkaan in Cancer, the 1st Drekkaan in Scorpio and the last Drekkaan in Pisces are very difficult and are called 'evil' Drekkaan, leading to difficult life experiences.

Other Drekkaan -The 2nd decant (Drekkaan) of Aries and Taurus, the 1st Drekkaan of Leo and the 3rd of Scorpio are named as quadruped decants. According to Phal Deepika, 'the persons born when these decants are rising will be poor, cruel and unscrupulous'.

According to BPHS
the effects in the 1st Navaansh of a decant are full,
in the second Navaansh of a decant medium and
in the last decant 'nil' (limited).
According to Saravali male planets (Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Pluto) are strong in their 1st decants, neutral planets (Mercury, Saturn, Raahu, Ketu, Uranus) in the 2nd decants and the female planets (Moon, Venus) are strong in their 3rd decants.

All Avasthaa rules applies to Drekkaan as well as to all other Vargas, e.g. Saravali states about a planet in Swasth Avasthaa: 'A planet in its own decant confers virtues.'

Brihat Jataka maps the 1st Drekkaan of a Raashi to the Lord of that Raashi itself, the 2nd Drekkaan of a Raashi to the Lord of the 12th Raashi to it and the 3rd Drekkaan to the Lord of the the 11th Raashi of it. The resulting lordships and related Raashi are included in the following table.
