Laksh Jaap
From JR Group in response of my question on Laksh Jaap:

Pt Arjun on
dear sushmaji
the count of one lakh or two lakh is not recommended for your specific situation and you may keep chanting any of the following Saatwik Mantra:

1. om namah shivaaya
2. om namo naaraayanaaya
3. om namo venkateshaaya
4. om namo bhagavate vaasudevaaya
5. gayatri mantra

as regards Muhurta for starting Mantra jaap, any day is fine for me but you are at liberty to follow your own sentiments. recently one godman was not operated for few hours fearing that if done in rahukalam it would not be successful but it is a different thing though that he died later and the operation did not succeed even after Raahukalam passed away. rather all doctor fraternity felt that if the operation was performed in time in rahukalam, he would have survived.

Actually, all the Mantra that are found in Puraan and Itihaas should not be taken directly to perform Jap. Be it Laksh Jap or whatever it is. Only with the advise and guidance of a genuine Aachaarya, who had done Kathor Saadhanaa is eligible. That too, he has to recommend only Saattwik and easy Mantra.

Further, our holy scriptures prohibit women from uttering Beejaakshar. That is why, great Aachaarya like Shanakar Bhagavatpaad,  Raamaanujaachaarya, Madhwaachaarya, Nigamantha Maha Desikan and such others have written Shlok and Stotra for the benefit of women and those deemed to be unfit for uttering of Beej Mantra.

This is not on the reasons of caste or birth. They have been put away on various reasons. For example, women need not do any type of Saadhanaa, because the good results or effects of Saadhanaa did by their husband will automatically belongs to them. It is said that good results of effects will be shared by the wives, the bad effects or results will remain with the husband himself and he has bear the responsibility of his bad Karm. This is what happened in the life of Vaalmeeki.

So, when we dwell through Puraan, we get a numerous examples like this. Similarly, in Sri Vaishnava Vadakalai Sri Desikan Sampradaya, women are laid with the symbols of Sudarshan and Paanchajanya called Tapt Chakraamkanam, a part of Panch Sanskaar. Here also, the women are restricted from uttering Omkaar. Instead, they are permitted to AM i.e for Om Namo Naaraayanaaya they do Jap on Om Namo Naaraayanaaya.

Also, the physical features of today’s women do not permit to perform such long lasting procedures. The monthly menses or periods are one of the reasons. If any Jap is done, they should be discontinued on the 4 or 5 days of periods, as the case may be. Then, again it can be resumed from the 5 or 6th day. Discontinuing a Jap, means starting again from first step. So, they are advised to simply recite Shlok and Stotra as given by Aachaaryas. For example, Sri Venkateswara Stotram, recited after Sri Venkateswara Suprabhatam, which starts with "Kamalakucha chuchuka kumkumto...", is a very powerful one. It protects and acts as a shield from the effects of Kali Yug. So also, there are number of Shlok written by great Sages like Vyaas etc and great Aachaaryas like Shankar, Raamaanuj, Madhwa and others.

About time, any time is deemed fit. For recitation of the Names of Almighty does not require a specific time. Only when we have any Sankalp, Kaamya Karm, then only time is needed. As the time is also one of the creations of the Supreme God Head, Lord Naaraayan, it is only good and not bad. Good or bad depends on us. Lakshmee pate tenghri yugmam smaraami. As you have already aware of the following Shlok, wherein states that :

Tadeva lagnam sudinam tadeva, taaraa balam Chandra balam tadeva
Vidyaa balam daiv balam tadeva, lakshmee pate tenghriyugmam smaraami.

Which means that you are Lagna, you are good day, you are Taaraa Balam, you are Chandra Balam, you are Vidyaa Balam, you are Daiv Balam. Hence, O Lakshmee Pati, I concentrate on your divine lotus feet.

Also, in Sankalp, we say, Sri Vishnu Yog, Sri Vishnu Kaaran, hence, no need to see about Muhoort. My opinion is this.

Further, as per the information that I got from my elders, I heard that the 5th Lord from the Ascendant or Raashi denotes the Deity, who will suit the native. For example, if there is Mercury or Budh, then Lord Vishnu is the Deity who favors and suits the native. Likewise, for remaining Graha also. (I request the elders, Sri RRji, Sri Krishnan Ji, Sri Arjun Ji to confirm on this.)

Maha Saadhwee Seetaa could burn Raavan to ashes with her mere sight, She was such a powerful woman, but she did not do that. She waited for Raam. It is Her pride too. Similarly, Draupadee. She was an Avataar of Maa Kaalee. But, she depended on Paandav. That is Indian Women.

Elders, I beg your pardon, if I had hurt you by my words. But, we have to respect our scriptures. Sushma Ji may think I am against women. No and never. I am only expressing my opinion as per the facts I knew from my elders. The Kali Yug does not permit women to do such rigorous practices. You may ask that Gaargee, Aditi, Vinataa, Gaayatree, Saraswatee are women, and how they became divine personalities without such austerities. But, adhering to natural and personal responsibilities also can elevate a person to divinity.

Hence, my opinion is that instead Laksh jap, women may / should opt for Paaraayan of Shlok. They will benefit a lot. This is the fact. Even in Paraashar Smriti, it is said that women must follow their husbands and the fruits of husband’s good deeds will certainly belong to his wife. None other than wife has right on it. I once again request all the elders to kindly forgive me if my words have discouraged you.
