Churning of Ocean
[Branched from  V-Raamaayan, 1/14/45]

Why this churning of the Milky Ocean took place?

Once, Durvaasaa Rishi was coming from Vishnu's Lok, carrying a flower garland as a Prasaad in his hand. On the way he saw Indra riding his elephant Airaavat. Sage Durvaasaa thought that this Prasad was worthy of Indra, as he was the king of Devtaa, so he came forward and offered that garland to him, respecting him as the administrator of the Universe. Indra decorated that garland on the head of his elephant Airaavat threw it on the road and crushed it under his feet. Seeing the insult of his garland which was a Prasaad, Durvaasaa Muni got angry and cursed Indra to fall from the grace and lose his riches. Accordingly, Indra lost everything and became destitute. He then approached Vishnu. Vishnu rebuked Indra for ridiculing such an elderly sage like Durvaasaa and then planned to churn the Milky Ocean to retrieve all the lost treasures.
