 5 - 1940    Sapporo (Japan) -> St Moritz (Switzerland) -> Garmisch-Partenkrchen (Germany)
 5 - 1944    Cortina d'Ampezzo (Italy)
 5 - 1948    St Moritz (Switzerland) - 28 countries participate. Germany and Japan were not invited. 10 countries won Gold Medals.
 6 - 1952    Oslo (Norway) - Olympic Flame was lit in a fireplace of the home of a skiing pioneer and was conducted by 94 participants entirely on skis.
 7 - 1956    Cortina d'Ampezzo (Italy) - The torch bearer entered the stadium on skates, his skate caught on a cable, the flame was nearly extinguished, but
                        was saved. The first time these games were televised but no television rights were sold.
 8 - 1960    Squaw Valley, CA (USA) - The first time the specific place was assigned for the games and the first time computer was used to tabulate the
                        results of the games (by IBM). The Opening and Closing ceremonies were presented by Walt Disney.
 9 - 1964    Tyrolean, Innsbruck (Austria) - Soviet Skating star Lidia Skoblikova won all four Gold medals.
10 - 1968    Grenoble (France) - First time the television broadcast was in color.
11 - 1972     Sapporo (Japan)
12 - 1976    Innsbruck (Austria) - Two Olympic flames were lit this year as the Austrian town was chosen second time.
13 - 1980    Lake Placid, NY (USA)
14 - 1984    Sarajevo (Yugoslavia) - Sapporo (Japan) and Gotheburg (Sweden) were front-runners, but surprisingly Sarajevo was chosen for 1984 Winter
                        games. Yugoslavia won its first Olympic Medal (silver) in slalom.
15 - 1988    Calgary, AB (Canada) - New events were added, for the first time Speed Skating was held indoors on the Olympic Oval, and it lasted for 16 days.
16 - 1992    Albertville (France) - These were the last games held together with Summer Olympics. Germany competed as single nation, Croatia and Slovania
                        made the debut. Toni Nieminen won the Gold Medal at the age of 16, the youngest male Winter Olympic champion. New Zealand was the first medalist
                        from the southern hemisphere.
17 - 1994    Lillehammer (Norway)
18 - 1998    Nagano (Japan) - First Game to host more than 2,000 athletes, Women's Hockey made the debut in these Games.
19 - 2002    Salt Lake City, UT (USA) - An Australian won the first Gold Medal from southern hemisphere in 1,000-meter skating.
20 - 2006    Turin (Italy)
21 - 2010     Vancouver, BC (Canada) - Second time hosting country. Largest metropolitan area of 2.5 million population to ever host a Winter Olympic Games.
22 - 2014    Sochi (Russia) 6-15 Feb - The first subtropical city to host Winter Olympic Games. The Olympic Village and the Olympic Stadium will be located on the
                        Black Sea coast. Sochi is a Russian city situated on the coast of Black Sea.
23 - 2018    Pyeongchang (S Korea) - 9 Feb - 25 Feb.

* Francis Ochoa has been the only Spaniard who has won the Winter Olympic Gold Medal in slalom.
